Mary Kauer: May 21, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
How are you today? Me? I didn't have to work today so I can do this letter sooner then I usually do.
It looks like this weekend, around here is going to be colder then it has been.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

             Rib Lake Wis
             May 20, 1925
Hello Howard:-
I spose you thot I'd never
answer but I'm not dead
just yet. I'll have to pay my
insurance first. I'm glad to
hear that you're not working
too hard. Neither am I just
now. You wanted to know where
Bogumilla live. Well they have
a store and they live upstairs.
It's the second building from
the post office. You can come

over Monday or Tuesday if you
want to come. The store is
open on those nights and you
can ask for me there. You'd
probably break your neck com-
ing upstairs. There was one
girl fell down but she didn't
get hurt by luck. But don't
come before eight o'clock. And
honest Howard you can't come
any oftener. Because you know
why.

I had some bad luck yesterday.
I was ironing and instead of
ironing the clothes I went
across my arm and burnt it.
It's not very bad but it makes
me mad any how.
  Say the band is playing
outside and if doesn't first
playing such lively pieces
I'll get up and jig. If I had
someone to dance with I'd be
alright now.
  They are building a new

city hall across the street
from here and one day I
tried to flirt with those
fellows and they wouldn't
even look up. I don't think
that was very nice of them.
  Well so long now it's
getting pretty late
                  Mary

Reading it I was wondering how someone accidentally runs an iron over their arm. I bet she was day dreaming about something or someone.
She mentioned they were building a new city hall. I tried to find a picture of it but could not. In Rib Lake they do have a Municipal building. I wonder if it is the same one or even in the same place as the one she is taking about. I think some day soon I will have to take a ride to Rib Lake and check some of the places out to see if they are still there.
I wonder what kind of band was playing outside and why?
So many questions that will never be answered because they have faded away never to known again.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

Just one of the many logging pictures I have that I have no idea when it was taken or who could be in it.

This one was taken in late summer 48 1936. That what is written on the back. The woman in the picture I think is Grandma.

No idea who this little boy is.

Well that's all I have for you today. So stay warm this weekend and I'll be back on Tuesday with another letter from a fading past.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: May 4, 1925 Rib lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
How was your weekend? Mine was good. I got a new car. So I'm enjoying the feeling of having a new car. Now the payments begin.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary:

The post mark on the envelope was May 4 but the letter is dated April 26. So it took her awhile to get it in the mail.

              Rib Lake Wis
              April, 26, 1925
Hello Howard:-
  Didn't you say I should
write once a month? I'll try
now but I haven't written a
letter for so long that I'm
all out of practice.
How are you? If you're as
well as I am then you're all
right. I've been a regular
farmer all the while I was
home. The rest were all

sick for a few days so I was
never out of a job. But now
they are tired of me so I'm
going back to town.
              Friday Night
Well, I'm back to Rib Lake
again and I haven't even
got ink here. So you'll
have to exqueeze me. This
letter ought to be long enough.
It took me five days to
write it. I spose your busy
farming now. Don't work

too hard tho. That makes
your hair gray. That's the
reason I'm getting so old.
Is Anna Roseen home yet?
I got a letter from Rose
today and she wanted to
know where Anna is.
Rose says she gets awfully
lonesome. specialy on Sundays
(For me of course) And who
wouldn't be lonesome for me?
  How is Anna Roinila?
Or don't you know anything

about her. I suppose she
is still at Youman's. Did
you call on her already
or did the weameryman
beat you to it?
  Well good bye & best
wishes from Mary
0/0 P. Bogumill

P.S. I'm working for a Polack
this time.

I wonder who she was working for? Were they polish or was Polack their last name? She should does do a lot of referring to people by what heritage they were.
I know there were a couple words that I was not sure of the spelling, sorry. Maybe you can figure them out and let me know what they are.

Anyway here are a few random pictures of old cars, in tribute to me getting a new one.

I don't know who this little boy is. I'm not good at telling what kind of car this one is but I think it is the oldest of the three I am showing you.

This was taken at Grandpa and Grandma's house.

Must have been a get together at the home place.

That's all I have for you today.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Mar.27, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis

Hello Friends,
I hope this letter finds you in a good mood and looking forward to a nice weekend.
Here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

             Rib lake Wis
             Mar. 27, 1925
Dear Howard:-
  No, I'm not sore or
sick or dead either. I
guess I'm just lazy. I
did some sewing and
ch crocheting for myself
and then we started a
sewing club for the church
so you see I have a (poor
excuse) anyhow.

How did you like this warm
weather that we had.
Mrs. Pilon & I both had
spring fever if you know
what that is.
  What are you doing now?
Do you still have to get
up before breakfast and go
to work or are you home
again. I don't know whether
I'll be here all summer or
not as Hilda said that she
wants to leave. My sister
said I was to come home

this summer and keep
house. She is going to work
outdoors with dad and
she got a pair of overalls already.
Maybe I'll change places with
her since I can't cook
Did you hear about the scrap
that one of the Finnlanders had
here at the mill? I guess some
other fellows and the Finns girl
went thrue the mill and that
made him jealous. That's the
kind of a beau to have.
don't you think so?

There was an old Finn or Swede,
I don't know which, staying at
the hotel here for a couple
of days. Hilda laughed every
time she came out of the
dining room, because he
talked so Swedey.
 Well here's hoping you
haven't got smallpox or scarlet
fever
                             Mary
One girl did here of scarlet fever
and now there's another one sick.

Not to much here. She was part of a sewing club at church. I wonder if she was a good sewer?
She makes it sound like the Finnish people were kind of trouble makers.
I wonder who the old guy was that was staying at the hotel?

Here are a few random pictures for you to see.

No idea who she was. It was taken in Appleton at a studio called Ross.

A group of girls from around the 1920's.

No clue who they are or what is going on.

Well that's all I have for you today.
I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Feb. 30, 1925 Rib lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope this post finds everyone in fine spirits. At least it's not super cold outside right now.
Here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

        Rib Lake Wis
         Feb 30, 1925
Hello Howard:-
     Well, you said I have
to write a long letter this
time so I'll see what I can
do. I feel awfully sorry for
you that you have to get
up before breakfast. It's
a shame to make any
one work so hard.
I had a letter from Anna
Roseen yesterday. She can
write a long letter, can't she?
Must be that she was born

under a different star than
I.
 How did you like last
weeks weather? Didn't it
just make you feel like
Easter? I guess it was the
January than but it came
in Feb. I'm glad that it's
snowing again today. You
know I always did like the
snow.
 So you would like to
know if I saw any of the
pictures at the show or
if I walked to town alone.
Well, I did see some of

the pictures but I don't
remember the title. But that's
because the hall was so
cold that I nearly froze.
First I'll give you an invitation
for the big day as you say
but what is a big day? That's
what I can't find out. The long-
est day of the year is a
pretty big day, isn't it?
  I don't scrap anymore for
the simple reason that I
have no one to scrap with.
I'm so glad to get home on
Sundays that I forgot all

about it. Last Sunday I stayed
at the hotel and I think
it was the lonesomest day
I ever spent. Even the kid
is gone. He has scarlet fever
so he's quarantined for six
weeks. There's typhoid fever
here too but so far I haven't
heard of smallpox. I think
that's just for the Swedes.
Don't get sore because the
Swedes are pretty good
after all and it would be
too bad it they all died.
This is a fair sized letter, don't
you think so?      Mary

Just a everyday communications kind of letter. It sounds like a number of people were having problems with a number of different disease. It's nice to see she would miss the Swedes if they suddenly all died. Or maybe just certain ones.
I wonder if when she said she does not scrap any more means she is not fighting with someone. At least that's what I think she is talking about.
By the sounds of this letter she must have been a little lonely and maybe was hoping someone (Grandpa) would come and keep her company.

Anyway here are a few random pictures I picked for you to look at. See if you can figure out the theme.

I'm not sure who this is for sure. But they look like they were not feeling very well.

I think this was my dads cousin Tommy.

On the back it says Marlene & Marianne. This was taken at one of the class trips taken to either Washington D.C. or maybe New York.
Did you get the theme?
They are all on or in bed. I know corny.
Well that's all I have for you today.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Jan. 30, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to the weekend. It's suppose to be around 30 degrees. A heat wave! Yeah!!!
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what it says:

       Rib Lake Wis
       Jan. 30, 1925
Dear Howard:-
  Well I supose you
think I forgot all about
you this time.
   How are your tonsils
now. Do they still bother
you? I'm getting on the
same as always. I was
at home last Sunday and
walked back. I had a
heck of a time for myself

but I guess my mother was
scared I'd freeze or someone
would kidnap me. She doesn't
need to worry, there's no
such luck.
  Rosie is still at home,
playing hired man. The
boys were all home from
camp last Sunday and they
look like a bunch of tramps.
They are all letting their
beards grow.
Sunday there is a party at
Fuch's, its one of the boys

birthday.
I was at a party two weeks
ago Saturday eve. here in town
and Sunday I went to show
but it wasn't with my cousin
or Charly. gee, I thot I was
smart.
I read two of the books
already and I like them of
course. Only trouble is that
the girls are always so
awfully beautiful. But they
are the kind of stories

that I like.
  I'll have to close now
as it is near to supper
time. First thing I know
Hilda will be sore.
    good luck from Mary

P.S. Thanks for the Valentine
but its not so. I mean your
being bashful.

Not much to comment on here. Grandpa must have been having trouble with his tonsils at the time.
I wonder what the name of the books were that she was reading?
She mentioned the boys being back from a camp. It was a logging camp she was talking about, I suppose.
Here are a couple of pictures of logging. One is of a camp by Ogema. N. Nelson must have had the camp because that is what it says at the bottom of the picture.
I did my best to improve it. There are two of these pictures. This is the brighter of the two.

The one in the middle is Grandpa. Don't know who the other two are. Notice the beard on the one.

Here is just a random picture of  I think three of Grandpa and Grandma's boys with their chickens.

Since she mentioned a valentines card he must have sent her early, I decided to show you one of the old ones from around that time.
I know it's a little early but it looks like one a country boy would give to a girl he liked.

Well, that's about it for now. I hope you have a good weekend.
So till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Jan. 19, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was uneventful. The weather was still a little colder then I like for this time of the year.
This next letter is dated Jan 8th but the envelope is marked Jan.19th. I'm not sure if it was put in the wrong envelope some time or if she dated it that way. Which looking back on a letter from a couple of posts ago I think getting put back in a wrong envelope is what happened.
Anyway here is the next letter.

As always here is what it says:

           Rib lake Wis
           Jan. 8, 1925
Dear Howard:-
   How is the New Year
treating you? I hope
fine the same as me.
Did that fortune of yours
come true? You said you
were to be married before
the end of 1924. Are you?
And will you give me an
introduction to your wife
some time? Well, I wish
you all kinds of good

luck.
How are Emma & Ed getting
along? The same as before
she went to Canada? But
for heavens sakes don't
tell her that I asked
you.
How is your cold by this
time? I hope you are well
again. I was in bed the Sun-
day after Xmas with a cold
that I caught Xmas night
Did I tell you that we
went fire fighting after

our party? That's when I
got it. But now I'm fine
again and feel like a
million dollars.
  Rosie was helping out
at one neighbors last
week but now she's home
again. I'm glad I'm not at
home. Then they'd want me
to come and I'd rather
work for strangers. That's
not being very kind hearted,
is it?

Guess I'll quit now as it
is nearly ten o'clock. It's
time for good people to
say their evening prayers
         Love & good luck
         from M.K.

        % National

Not to much here. Just talking about their colds I guess. She was out late Xmas maybe sitting by a bonfire which is how she caught a cold.
She must be staying at the hotel in Rib Lake called National. I wonder why she does not stay at home with her family. I wonder if I'll ever find out why she is not at home. It sounds like she is working at the hotel. Saying she would rather work for strangers then her own family.
And as for Grandpa getting married, does not happen until the thirties.

Here are a few random pictures for you to see.

This is a picture of Mary. I wonder when this one was taken?

Right now I don't know who this is. It could be one of Grandpa's many female friends. Could be a relative also or just a neighbor girl.

I'm not sure who these boys are. I have an idea but I think I need a little help on it. I'm sure one of my family members will tell me, I hope.

Well that's all I have for you today.
So till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Cousin Walter Walin: Jan. 16, 1925 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope this letter finds you all well and staying warm. The bitter cold still has a good hold on us around here.
Here is the next letter from Cousin Walter.

As always here is what it says, I think.

                Chicago, Ill.
                Jan. 16 -'25
Dear Howard:
              Received your
letter some time ago I
know but can't recall just
when, but that however
makes no difference as I
must answer it some
time so may as well now.
This is Fri. eve and I'm
at home so have lots of
time. You see Fri is
a bad night to go out
because if I do then
I'd be all tired out for
Sat and Sunday.
            2
Started to work again
the 5th of Jan at Monkey
Wards again. Things are
quite slack as yet so
must take what I can
get altho I hope the
next time I write you
I can say I have a
better job. Have been
promised one at least
but a person can't
live on promises you
know.
  How's everyone up
there O.K. I hope. We
are all as well and
happy as can be expected.
              3
Had a letter from Juluis
and Alfred N. today. Neither
one of them are working
so I guess you are
not the only one loafing.
Juluis says he expects
to pay me a visit next
month. It will be some-
thing different for him.
The city I mean.
  We are having
fair weather now. Not
at all cold but it
snows a little once in
a while but that
amounts to nothing.

Well news is rather
scarce so will close
for now. Let me hear
from you real soon
and give me all the
news. Greet your
Mother & Dad for me
and also Thomas.
         Your Cousin
           Walter
How's the Roseen &
Julin Families O.K.. I
hope. Greet them. Take
Nels out some nite &
get him stewed up. Ha

He mentioned working at Monkey Wards which for people who are not young enough to remember was what people called Montgomery Wards. It started in 1872 until 2000. It's still an online catalog known as Wards.
I'm sorry if I misspelled any of the names he wrote. It was a little hard to read some of them.
Since news was scarce in this letter here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This picture is on the light side but I did what I could to get it darker. I don't know who they are but they are piling hay. It is actually darker here then the original.

This looks like a bunch of guys camping somewhere.

I don't know who this little girl is. I don't know what year it was taken.

Well that's about all I have for you today.
So stay warm this weekend.
Your friend,
Sandy
