Dear Friends,
Well, it's the end of yet another week, almost. I volunteered to work Saturday. Not sure why I did it. Oh well. I just hope the rest of the weekend will go smoothly.
Anyway, here is the first letter from 1934. It is from a Helen:
As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:
Evanston Ill.
Jan. 15-'34
Dear Howard:-
Was glad to get your
letter & was surprised
to see you still thought
of me When you were
writing.
I should like to scold
you for not answering
sooner but I will
forgive you this time
hows that?
Well Howard, you should
worry if Marie didn't
write- there are plenty
pebbles on the beach
yet, don't you think?
I have seen her twice since
I am here but honestly she
didn't say a word about
meeting you or how she liked
you or anything, and she
doesn't know that you & I
write- so don't tell her either.
Do you know Mildred Bjorkland?
She spend her Xmas vacation
here in the city so I had the
privilege of meeting her one
night at my sisters place.
My brother has kind of a case
on her- and really I wouldn't
mind having her for a sister
in law (Ha Ha) Good thing she
doesn't hear me or I might
get slap-
Yes, I had a very lovely Xmas
only was kind of blue.
I like my job real well. Mrs. &
I get along well so far. I wish
you could get a glimpse of her
she sure is good looking. The
men folks all like her I wonder
if you would.
I wish you could come over
tomorrow & help me iron
for I have so much ironing
to do. I suppose you know how
alright.
Today was like a spring day
out, about 40 degrees above &
no snow. I suppose in April
we will make up for this nice
weather.
Well Howard, be good to your
self and when you have
time drop me a line, won't
you
Till then I remain
Your friend
Helen
I think this is Helen Balusik. If it is her I wonder how long and how often she is in Evanston, Ill.
She is still trying to get Grandpa hooked up with someone.
I wonder if her brother got together with Mildred.
It sounds like the year was starting up on the warm side. I wonder how long it lasted?
I wonder if Grandpa was good at ironing?
Here is a story from March 19, 1936 from The Milwaukee Journal:
Privately owned power plants were cheaper then community owned.
Now that is something to think about.
Here are a couple of jokes I found from some newspaper:
I do wonder if it was from 1927.
A couple of good chuckles.
Finally, here is a random picture:
Someones class mate from the 50's, I think.
Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a very nice weekend.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Helen: Dec. 27, 1929 Evanston Ill.
Dear Friends,
The first full week in September is about done. How was you week? Mine, I was on vacation. I just wish it could have been warmer. I'm just glad that we are not having the weather they are having down south. Oh well, what you going to do.
Anyway, here is a letter from Helen who lives in Evanston Ill.:
As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:
Evanston, Ill.
Dec 26/29
Dear Howard:-
Happy New Year
to you!
Was surprised to see
a note enclosed with
the nice card- surely
thank you- you know
I never do forget my
friends after I once
meet them so I send
everybody a greeting.
Hope you have had
a fine Xmas & all
the happiness in the
world.
I sure had a good time at
my married sister's place.
I went there Xmas eve
& came back last nite
almost mid night.
Xmas morning Anna &
Frank Novy came there
too so we all had a good
old fashioned chicken
dinner- and we listened
to the radio most of the
afternoon. Heard music
from Germany & even
England. It sure is great
isn't it- how music can
be heard such a distance.
No Howard, I never think
of that (bunk) what that
certain party told me about.
Don't ever think of it or
let it worry you for people
always like to talk it they
find something to talk about
especially such things.
This is my second job
since I came back this
if all I can't seem to find
anything suitable & jobs
are quite scarce. But I
think now after the holiday
it will change-
Anna N. & I room together &
if we don't have good times
together- I sure do enjoy her
company.
Well Howard- hope you
have success & happiness
throughout this coming
New Year. I do hate to part
from the old year, don't
you? We never know what
the New Year has in store
for each one of us.
May God bless you
always.
Old friend
as always
Helen
There was actually only three pages but it was to big for the scanner so I did it in two.
I wonder what kind of scandal was going on the Grandpa was so concerned about it. Will anyone ever mention what it was?
I wonder what kind of music she was listening to that was from Germany and England?
Here is a page from the scrap book.:
This was one page but it was too big for the scanner.
Like I told you before, someone was very interested in these little girls. So there are a number of pictures of them yet to come.
Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":
Enjoy the signs and the start of "Just Married jokes".
And now a random picture:
This happened in 1958. Right now I don't know who was involved or why it happened. But I'm sure someone will tell me.
Well that's about all I have to say today.
I hope you all have a good weekend and people in Florida, stay safe.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Helen: Aug. 21, 1929 Statesan, Wis.
Dear friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. I didn't get to go hiking this weekend because the husband had to bale hay. Plus his hip is bothering him so he wanted to take the weekend off from it. I just hope we can go this next weekend. We also did get to visit with our granddaughter. She is growing so fast.
Anyway, here is a letter from a Helen. I don't know if it is the same Helen or not. It looks like her last name might be Silampa. At least that's what it says on the back of the envelope.
As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

Dear friend,
I received
your letter some
time ago but I
never got the
chance to answer
it. You know we
are kept busy
by eating, sleep-
ing and etc.
I'm getting
along fine but
this life is get-
ting monotonous.
Imagine a young
person coupled
up in a San.
for Land only
knows how long.
But fight I will
if it means
my health back.
I'm going to
take a leave of
three days and
go and stay to
Milwaukee by
my sister for
Labor Day. For-
get this life for
awhile.
Excuse my
stationary and
pencil for this
time. Dinner is
here so I'll close.
Helen
This might be another Helen. I wonder what kind of job she had that she was looking forward to three days away from it. Three day off any job is something I think we all look forward to.
Here is a picture from the scrap book:
One of the rich farms of the Sacramento valley in California is shown under water in this air view. This flood, the result of 14 days of rain, has done damage estimated at $500,000 and may be tip-off as to what the middle west may expect.- A.P. Wirephoto.
See California can get a lot of rain too.
I wonder how much this kind of flood would cost in today's economy.
Here are the last three page of the joke book I've been showing you:
I was not sure if I had shown you the first page because it is a little more ripped. I checked and had not scanned it. The other two pictures are the pages in the middle of the book.
I hope you enjoy these funnies.
I do have another joke book I plan on showing you. If you liked these jokes you will also enjoy the next book.
Finally, here is a random picture:
This is two picture together. The one on the left has what looks like some of Grandpa's and Grandma's children. Not sure who.
The one on the right looks like it could be Grandpa and someone talking by the shed door.
No idea what the year is.
Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.

Helen: Feb. 16, 1926 Westboro, Wis.
Dear Friends,
It has been a very wet week. To wet for my taste. I just hope the weekend is more on the dry side. Well as dry as it can be even though the ground sounds like you are walking on a sponge.
Anyway here is the next letter. It from Helen. No idea right now what her last name is. She lived in Westboro.
It's a sympathy note. here is what it says:
Westboro, Wis.
Feb. 16, 1926
Dear Howard:-
Please
accept my sincere
sympathy in your
great loss. My thot's
have surely been
with you, although I
haven't been able to
do anything for you.
Hope you will all
be given strength, so
you may succeed thru
all the trials set before
you.
I tried to call you, but
couldn't get the line, so
wrote a few lines instead.
Call me sometime if you
are not too busy.
With love
Helen
I found out how he died. It was a kind of freak accident. A heavy sliding barn door came off and fell on him. I sounds like a very gruesome thing. I wonder who was there when it happened. I don't know much about my great grandpa. I do know he spoke and wrote in Swedish more then English. I think I have shown you a number of pictures of him. I'm sure there are a few more of him that will show up.
Here are a few random pictures.
This one was taken by S.A. Johnson from Phillips, Wis. No idea which church it is.
This is a postcard of the First Luthern Church in Ogema, Wis.
I wish I knew what the gathering was for. Maybe a funeral.
Well that's about all I have for you today.
I hope you have a good weekend. Me, I have a wedding to attend. I just hope the weather cooperates.
Till next time.
