Mary Kauer: July 27, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good week. it looks like the weekend for me will be short, I have to work Saturday 6 hours. I just wish it could be warmer. This whole month has been below freezing and a lot below zero. I sure hope spring will spring a lot sooner then last year. Right now it doesn't look good.
Enough of my whining, here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

            Rib Lake Wis
             July, 27, 1925
Hello Howard:-
    Well, I don't know
wither you'll get this before
Wednesday or not but its
the best I can do. I got
your letter this morning
and and I'm answering it
this afternoon. That's pretty
good don't you think?
I realy ought to get a

prize of some kind for
it. But honest, I told
you I wouldn't answer
and this is the last
time that I will. Cro
(Cross my heart & gizzard)
We were to a picnic
at Harpers Monday and
I went swimming and
almost drowned. Wasn't it
to bad I didn't? Just think

what a lot of worries that
my mother would have
been rid of.
  But I didn't mean to
say that I went swimming.
I just practiced and went
out too far.
  Say, I'm anxious to
hear that dream you
had. I've got a dream book
so I'll have to look it
up and see whether it's

good or bad luck.
oh say, I've got a girl
for your brother. I don't
mean that I've got her but
I know her real well and
she's a peach. In the first place
she's an awfully good girl, she's
nice looking, good natured
about 5ft. tall has brown hair
real blue eyes and she's about
18 yrs. old. But she's got a
brother that's always got an
eye on her.
                Mary

I wonder what kind of a dream Grandpa had and if Mary was able to interpret it?
I like the way she said,"Cross my heart and gizzard". most of us do the cross your heart part but this is the first time I've heard gizzard. She could be such a silly girl with an off the wall kind of humor.
I wonder if Uncle Thomas and this pretty girl ever got together?
I hope she was able to learn how to swim.
In honor of swimming I found a few pictures that have water in them.

This is a postcard of Copper Falls by Mellen Wis. Sold at the Mellen Drug Store. No idea what year.

This is a picture that was taken at Copper Falls. It could be Grandpa and Mary.

I can't make out who this is but I think they were camping by water. if you look behind him there is someone sitting next to the water.

Well that's about all I have for you today.
So stay warm, and enjoy your weekend. Mine will be a little shorter then I like.
Your friend,
Sandy

Edna: July 24,1925 Chicago, Ill

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend and stayed warm. Mine was shorter then usual because I had to work on Saturday. So Sunday was a housework stay in the house kind of day.
Here is the next letter from Edna:

As always here is what I see when I read this:

               Tuesday Eve.
               July 24, 1925
Dear Howard:-
   Hows the boy? Just
fine I hope, having a good
time.
   Excuse my pencil
& the straight lines because
I'm writing on my lap. So
you can imagine.
   I have a new job. I'm
working for the Managle now.
Started Monday. Sure is nice.
Like it fine.
    Just wrote a letter to
Gladys and must write one
home yet. I'm ashamed for
waiting so long in ans.
your letter. Please forgive
me.
   Sat I took Lininea

to the circus. Then down
to Al's. Sunday night to a friend
took both she & I to the
theater. Saw a western
picture. Sure was good.
   Last night Stella a
girlfriend of mine came
over & the lady down stairs
& Lininea & myself all went
swimming. Had a swell time.
   Tomorrow night I'm
taking her to Al's to stay a
few days.
   How's everything?
   How did you like the
pictures?
   I'm going to make my-
self a dress tonight. So can't
write much. So please

excuse mistakes ans
pencil. My pen is at home
and Mother has forgotten
to send it.
  I went shopping today.
But didn't get a thing. Some
shopper, eh?
   Well guess I better quit
now. No: Howard I have
not heard that joke about
the bottle. It's a good one.
   There's no news. Only
Gladys came in town
Wednesday. She told me
to greet you.
   Write soon Howard.
You know I love to hear
from you.
               Sincerely,
                       Edna

Nothing special in this letter. I'm not sure if I spelled the name right of who she was working for. Plus a few other words I'm sure I missed spelled.
I wish she would have repeated the joke about the bottle I would have like to read it.
She does sound like she was always busy going somewhere all the time.

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is Nels Roseen. Don't know what year this was or even who he was.

This is Fred J. Johnson. Taken at Dake Studio in Medford Wis.

Just a couple of guys, out standing in a field. I do wonder if the one on the right could be Grandpa. I guess I'll never know.

Well that's all I have for you today.
So take care.
Your friend,
Sandy

Anna Rainila: July 17, 1925 Eagle River, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you stayed warm this week. I sure hope this will be the last week of those kinds of temperatures. I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to spring.
Here is the next letter from Anna. The letter is dated April 14, 1925 But the envelope is dated July 17, 1925. I'm thinking she for some reason put the wrong date on the letter. Why? Who knows. But when you read the letter you will understand why I say this.

As always here is what it says:

            April, 14, 1925
Dear friend Howard:-
   Received your welcome
letter and must answer before
I forget.
Oh me! Oh my! Could it
be any warmer than it
is now, but heck we can
go in the lake always
when we feel too warm
we have the most fun
at the Lake. I am learning
to swim. I have my alarm
set for a quarter to six tomorrow
morning because we're all
going for a swim before
breakfast that what I
call rich(haha). Always
when we go to the Lake
there's about 10-15 &
even more there all
the time. I guess I'll go

to a summer resort every
summer & city for the
winter you might just
as well enjoy yourself
while your young. All of
us kids have a nice long
trip planned for tomorrow
tomorrow nite. With
a large Pierce Arrow.
So it don't take long.
The Chief at Everett's Resort
is going after his brother
& wants us to go along
he so we might just as
well go (haha) I guess
they have about 6 chiefs
at the "Everett's", we
only have 3 but that's
enough to listen to.
  I am Captain of Lights
here. Me oh my I must

always attend to them.
I mean electric lights
not kerosene. good grief no
like Westboro.
  We have pictures taken
almost every day. I'll
send one of one when I get
some. first good ones printed
if you don't show them
to everybody I mean nobody.
  My arm doesn't seem
to get any worse but
 not any better either of
times it is quite a bother
but I hope it will get
well soon but carrying
great big trays above
your head with one
hand is sure a peach
(haha) yet when I'm left
handed you know.

I'm glad you enjoying the
steam bath (haha)
One of the girls got $10.00
from a man for waiting
on him 3 days or so.
Talk about luck. Will
you see he was the
Mayor of Chi so no wonder.
A very nice family from
St. Louis Missouri was
talking about wanting
a girl to work for them
as maid when they go
back sounded as tho
she wanted me but don't
know yet. (haha) I'd
like to go with nice
respectable people for
the winter. it's nine
o'clock so I'll have to roll
in to bed so I can get up

early. So long
            From
              Morning Glory
P.S. That's my
new nick name
   (haha) another
is Happy Anna
     & Smiles
           Good grief
           What else

It sounds like working at this resort was a lot of fun. At that time wealthier people could spend a lot of their summers at a resort like this. I wonder how long the Mayor of Chicago stayed there that year?
Being the Captain of the Lights must have been a great honor. I wonder if at that time if some places in Westboro had Kerosene lights yet?
She sounds like she was a happy kind of girl to be a round. I hope she learned how to swim.
Me, a love the water. I spent most of my younger years around water. I'm a water girl.
She did mention some pictures she might have sent Grandpa. I may have already showed you some of those, maybe.
So in honor of water I found a few pictures involving water.

Not for sure who this is but, it kind of looks like my dad.

I can't make out who this is. I like his fish though.

When I first picked this picture I thought it was on a lake, but it's not. It's looks like it is someone working on a chimney and that is a field in the background.. Sorry. Blame my tired eyes for not looking at what I'm looking at. (haha)

Well that's about it for today.
Have a nice weekend and stay warm.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: July 13, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. I know I did. Our production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" was a hit with all who attended. So now I'm back to quiet nights at home.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Mary. It was dated July 10 but the postmark on the envelope is the 13th. It must have taken awhile to get it in the mail.

As always here is what it says:

           Rib Lake Wis
           July, 10, 1925
Hello Howard:-
  I got your letter Wed.
morning. My mother was just
up to see me so she wanted
to know who it was from.
I told her it was from
Rosie but of course she didn't
believe that. Then she grabbed
it and looked to see where
it was stamped, but the
stamp was so that you

couldn't read it. Then she
tried to guess from who it
was but I think she forgot
all about you already.
  Say Howard, if you
want to come up next week
you'll have to come on Wed.
I don't know whether I'll have
off Sat. evening or not.
Important Business Or maybe
you'd rather not come over at
all, how about it? Did Rib Lake
treat you pretty decent?

I think I saw you here the
4th. Were you on the side-
walk near the school hill?
I saw some one there with a
straw hat on.
  Elaine Scheek, the girl from
the telephone office, was up
tonight so we went for a walk.
But what she wanted was
to get some one to take
her to Chelsea to that
dance tonite. We were
all out of luck, tho, so
she got us some ice cream

and then went home like
a good girl.
  Well it's after ten already
so good night and pleasant
dreams. I have some awful
crazy ones sometimes.
          Best wishes from
                           Mary

Well not a whole lot here. Just a typical everyday kind of letter. I still wonder how old Mary was at this time. I would still love to know what he wrote but I don't think I will ever find that out.

Here are a few random things for you to look at.

I wonder what they had in the water tank and who they are. I have an idea but I'm not sure.

No idea who they are or even when it was taken.

Copyright is 1909. By Walter Wellman.
I have no idea who this was from.
Here is what it says on the back:
Hello:-
gentlemen
thank you for
the postal card
you you send me
from G.W.

At least I think that's what it says.

Well that's all I have for you today.
Stay warm.
Your friend,
Sandy

Anna Rainila: July 9, 1925 Eagle River, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope your week was good. I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to the weekend.
It is Valentines Day on Saturday. Plus if you have not seen The Medford Area Community Theater production of "The 25th Annual Putam County Spelling bee", it would make a great date night. That is if you find yourself in the area.
Anyway here is the next letter from Anna.

As always here is what it says. ( I may get a few words wrong)

                   July 9, 1925

            Anna
P.S. I had the Punkest
        Fourth in my life.
worked all day. (haha).

It sounds like it was a very busy time at The Hemlock.
I found the mayor of Chicago for 1925 and here is a summery of what I found.
Williamdever.jpg
William Emmett Dever

He was mayor from 1923-1927.
He was a democrat.
While in office he did many improvements to the city's infrastructure.
  Completion of Wicker Drive
  Extension of Ogden Ave.
  Straightening of the Chicago River
Building the city's first airport, Municipal Airport
He fought against corrupting influence of bootlegging & gangsters.
Despite considering himself "Wet" he enforced prohibition because it was the law of the land.
Media labeled his war on bootleggers as the "Great Beer War" and it resulted in a decline of crime.
He noted that although prohibition was a "tremendous mistake" he had no choice but to enforce it.
He was nicknamed "Decent Dever" by the press.
After his time as mayor he was a vice president of the Bank of America until his death on Sept. 13, 1929 at the age of 67 of cancer.

I tried to find the other two people she mentioned but I could not.

Now that I gave you a little history lesson here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This Julia, Freda, Lille Weberg and Grandpa.

 This is Lily Johnson.

This is Ester Waleen.

At least that is what it says on the backs of each of the pictures.

Since tomorrow is Valentines Day here is a little Valentine form me to you.

Well that's all I have for you today.
I hope you have a great weekend. And if you happen to find yourself in the area it's not to late to catch a play. Which last night was a great hit.
So till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Edna: July 8, 1925 Chicago, Ill

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. Had tech rehearsal for the play on Sunday. It's going to be a great show. I hope some of you can come and see it.
Anyway here is the next letter from Edna. Still not sure what her last name is for sure. It could be Swenson.

  Here is what it says:

             Chicago, Ill
              July 8, 1925
Dear Howard:-
  Well, I'll bet you think
I'm a slacker, but you see
I wrote you a letter yesterday,
but didn't send it. So there.
  I'm at work now, got
here half an hour too early.
I'm not working quite as
hard now, as when I
went home. They have some
new girls in. Helps some.
  Linnea likes Chicago.
Monday I had to leave
her home alone. I hated
to, but it was all I could
do. When I came home, she
was sitting on the veranda.
She had been down The
door, just a short dis-
tance from where I work.

with the daughter, where
we stay. They had gone
out for lunch & then
to a picture show. Gee!
They are nice to her. Mrs.
Skripps is taking her to the
beach today if it doesn't
rain. Mr. Nicolle told
Linnea, any time she
would like to hear the
radio she could get
the key from Mrs. Skripps
& go in their apt. & listen
in. Now I call that acc-
ommedating. Don't you?
  Sunday when we
got in, we took a taxi
from the station home.
When we got home we
went to bed. It was about
10 o'clock. Linnea slept
some on the train, but

I didn't sleep at all,
and you know about
what time I went to bed
Friday night(morning) Ha! So I was
quite fatigued.
I rode free to Spencer
(conductor) told me he couldn't
see how I could get up
home on that ticket. But
he left me go to Spencer on
it. Quite nice I must say.
  Virginia and I are to-
gether everyday. We sure
have the best of times.
  Hows "Harry"?
  Well, guess I must
close now & get to
work. It is almost
time for me to be

busy.
  Now, Howard, you
must answer, or I
might disown you. Ha!
  Have you seen any
Blue birds? Please don't.
          Sincerely,
          Edna
          906 Dohin St
          Chicago, Ill
P.S. Excuse stationery
and pencil. It is all
I could get a hold of.

It's been awhile since I had a letter from her. It sounds like she got lucky with the conductor of the train letting her ride for free to Spencer. That is something I don't see happening now a days do you? I wonder if the Spencer she mentioned is the one in Wisconsin or maybe Ill?
I think when she says "How Harry" maybe she is talking about his car.
I wonder why she asked about blue birds then said please don't? Maybe she wanted to be the one to see them and not him.
So many questions that will never be answered.

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is a picture of Ethel Lunstrom.

This is I think a picture of Grandpa with one of his lady friends. If you notice along the left side there is situate of a man. I think this is one of Grandpa's first attempts to develop pictures.

I think I know who house this is but I'm not completely sure.I'll let you know later.

Well that's all I have for you today.
So take care and I'll see you again on Friday.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: June 29, 1925, Rib lake, Wis

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was not to bad. I'm a little busy right now helping with the community theater with our next production, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I don't sing so I help back stage. The production dates are Feb. 12, 13 and 14. So if you find yourself in the area at that time we would like to entertain you.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

          Rib lake, Wis
          June, 29, 1925
Hello Howard-
  Say, I should think
you'd be scared to come
down here where all these
Germans are. But your
pretty strong so I spose you
feel safe. Won't it be
nice to see you again?
Do you always work daytime
or are you working nights
this week? I think this
letter is long enough to send
from the store to Dodges
               Mary
        over
P.S. If you are working
nights call up some
afternoon. Call Bogumilk
                    residence

Just a short letter that does not say much of anything. I wonder what kind of job Grandpa had at the time that sometimes he worked nights.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No idea who this woman is but, don't you just love her hat?

This is a picture of the home place. It was taken July 4th, 1938. I don't know who the man is.

No idea who this is but, she looks like she was having a good time.

Well that's all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a good weekend.
Your friend,
Sandy

address
          Anna Rainila

                Eagle River,
                  Wis

I know there are a number of words I have spelled wrong, sorry.
If anyone can tell me if I spelled her last name right it would be very helpful.
Last April I showed you a postcard of the Hemlock Lodge. I decided to show it to you again.

This is what it looked like back in the 1920's. I wonder if it is still there in some form or an other.
I think that some where before Anna Rainila was mentioned by someone or maybe I have already shown you a picture of her. I'll have to check later.
I wonder how long she worked at The Hemlock? Just another question that will never be answered. It sounds like she was a good worker.
There are more letters from her coming up so we will be able to learn more about her and where she was living and working.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This looks like it could have been taken at Big Falls, maybe.

No idea who any of these people are. It looks like it was taken on a school bus. I would like to know why the guy has what looks like a vale.

Just another picture of people I do not know who they are. I'm thinking it could have been taken in the 1920's. What do you think?

Well that's all I have for you today.
So I will close for now.
Till Friday,
your friend,
Sandy
