Mary Kauer: Oct. 13, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
The end of the week is here, kind of. What do I mean? I have to work on Saturday an so does the husband. Oh well, what's a person to do. And Saturday of course is Halloween. Do you dress up for Halloween? I don't. I think it will be a nice quiet night for me.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary:

As always, for those that find it hard to read here is what it says:

                Rib Lake Wis
               Tuesday 7 P.M.
Hello Howard:-
I'll see if I can say
hello and goodbye today.
Maybe I'll write one or
two sentences more.
Florence wants to write
to you, too, and maybe
you would rather get a
letter from her than
me.
  I had one letter all
written but I wrote it
with the baby in my lap
so it was all blotted and
she then she rumpled it
up yet so I'm writing an-

other one.
  Say, what do you think
Howard? I just got another
new dress. Mrs. B. gave it
to me for being such a
good girl. She says she
couldn't possibly get along
without me. That's some
compliment, isn't it? And
a dress is what I call a real
present. I think I'll stay
here the rest of my life
because no one else would
ever think so much of me,
at least I don't know any-
one that would, do you?
Well so long and good
luck and    ?   from Mary

I don't know about you but reading this letter she sounds to like she is hinting for Grandpa to get her a new dress, even though she was just given one from Mrs. B. for being a good helper. I wonder if he did get her one or maybe he just bought her a box of candy. Will this question be answered somewhere in a future letter or not? I guess you we will all just have to keep reading to see if any of our questions are ever answered.

I was looking through the scrape book and found something that might interest someone might be interested in weather. This is from February 24, 1936, it shows the record cold back then.

How does it compare to things now?
I like the way it predicts how the winter would be in 1986 and to compare it to the winter was in 1936.  It's a very interesting thing to read.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

Just a random picture of unknown people with no idea when it was taken.

No idea who this is, just sweeping her porch off.

This is Ronnie. Someones classmate or friend of the family.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope you have a good weekend and enjoy Halloween and don't O.D. on candy.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Oct. 5, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
It's me again. I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was nice and quiet. No drama for me. Just the way I like it.
Here is the next letter from Mary.

As always for those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                  Oct. 5, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   Thanks a lot
for the candy and
the two letters. You
ought to get a prize
for writing letters. I
think I should too, don't
you? My letters are
all so real love letters
aren't they?
I couldn't write a
love letter if I had
to. I wasn't cut out for
such stuff.
 Say, all I can say
today is hello & goodbye

It's almost 5.30 and
I've got an awful stack
of work yet.
  So goodbye till
next time.
   Love from Mary

Not a whole lot here. I think it sounds more like just a thank you letter. For him to write two letter and candy tells me he must have liked to write. I know I will never see any of the letters he wrote. But some of the women  mention his lengthy letters.  I know this blog would be a lot more interesting if I could share at least some of his letters with everyone. Then we could all see how he actually wrote.

Since it was a short letter I thought I would share a few jokes from the joke book.

And a picture from the scrap book.

"Twenty-Seven-Month-Old Jean McElroy is shown on her
arrival in San Francisco Tuesday from Shanghai after an un-
accompanied trip across the Pacific ocean. Her mother died in
China and she was brought to her father, a Los Angeles resident.
A ship's stewardess took care of her and en route three couples
sought to adopt her."

Now here are some random pictures for you to look at.

Just one of the portrait pictures of an unknown person. No idea when it was taken.

No idea who they are or when it was taken.

Someones classmate from school.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a good week and that you drop by again real soon for some more faded history.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Oct. 1, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
The work week is over for most. But there are some that have work. But that's life. What can you do.
Here is the next letter from Mary. Plus she added a little something with this letter.

As always for those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                   Rib Lake Wisc.
                  Sept. Oct, 1, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   I got your letter this
morning and gave Mrs.
B. a kiss for it. Do you
think that was enough
for a letter of that
size? And it made
quite a trip, too
didn't it?
   Say, Mrs. Hipke just
said that they are
going visiting Sunday
so I'm quite sure that
I'll go home in the
morning. If I don't I'll
call you up.

Say, this won't be a
very long letter as I
want to sew at my dress
yet. It's too hard sewing
in the evening. And
gee I've got so much
sewing ahead yet. John wants
me to make some curtains
for him and I've got some
things I'm going to make
for my hopeless chest
and Mrs. B. says I
can make her a scarf
for a dresser for Xmas so
that's a pretty strong
hint. Mary Schneider has
such a lot of things
made for herself that

I thot I better get busy, too.
  Well, I don't know any
other news so goodbye
for this time.
   love from Mary
P.S. I read all that
Swedish paper you sent
me.

Boy I wonder if I will ever find a letter that he wrote to someone. I know the chances are very very low.
As for the little something she added she wrote above it:

"Maybe you can get one at a bargain."

I do wonder why she added that to the letter? Did grandpa talk about having babies a lot to her? Or has she been thinking about having a baby? Questions where the answers have faded away never to be answered.
For those of you that have never heard of a "Hopeless Chest",the formal name is "Hope Chest", it is a chest a woman use to store things she hoped to use in her future or things for her wedding of her dreams.
I know how hard it is at the end of one month and the beginning of the next to remember when the new one starts.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

I thought since she mentioned babies I would share a picture of  a few young girls. No idea though who the are. The baby in the chair looks very serious.

No clue who this is or when it was taken.

Someone classmate named Fred from '60.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope you have a good weekend.I hope that people stay safe on the west coast of Mexico with a very strong Hurricane headed their way.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 27, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope your weekend was enjoyable. Mine was good. No dramas. The weather was not to bad. A little on the chilly side but the sun was shinning most of the time.
Well here is the next letter from Mary.

As always, for those that find it hard to read here is what I see:

                Rib Lake Wis
                Sept. 27, 1926
Dear Howard:-
  Well, this is Monday
evening so I'll have to see
write something that will
look like a letter.
  Mrs. Hipke is sick today
so I had to do the washing
by myself today She is

quite sick yet but I hope
she won't be sick very long.
How are you? Did you
go to show last nite? We
were to a party again. We
had just been home a few
minutes when Bob Hempt
came over and invited us
to come to his brothers
home. It's right near

the Fawn Valley school.
I got a letter from John
today and he says it's so
hot there that he almost
melts. I wish we had a
little of that heat here.
He's in the seminary now
and he has to wear a
cassock most of the time
and he says that makes it
lots worse. A cassock is

that black robe that priests
wear. I also got a letter
from Rosie's sister from
Philadelphia today. Remind
me of it when you see me
and I'll tell you what she
said about you. Then maybe
you'll be so stuck up you
won't look at me anymore
      Love from Mary.

I wonder how sick Mrs. Hipke was. I wonder what John's last name was and he became a priest.
I also wonder how hot it was back then.
I wonder what Rosie's sister said about Grandpa that Mary thought it would go to his head.
So many questions that will never be answered.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at:

No clue who these guys are, when it was taken or even what they up too.

Not sure when this was taken. Someone told me the guy at the podium is Grandpa. I don't know if he ever had a beard like that. If he did, it was before my time.

On the back it says: "Your pal Alice Landes 1957". Someones classmate.

Well that's all I have to share with you today. I hope you will come back again for more faded history.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 24, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
Well it's the end of another week and now we have the weekend to look forward to. It's starting to get colder around here. I think we have seen the last of high 60's and low 70's for this year. It is the middle of Oct. already. Where did the year go? I guess it's time to start getting ready to bundle up more and get close the house up for the winter that will be here sooner then we want.
Enough of that, here is the next letter from Mary.

As always for those that find it hard to read here is what it says:

Hello Howard:-
  I got your letter &
cards today and thanks
a lot for them. Tell
Thomas thanks for me
will you?
  I s'pose you got my
letter now. I mailed
it Wed. evening.
  Say, Howard would

you care if Mary
Schneider came along
Sunday? She asked
me today what I
was going to do Sun.
I guess she wanted
to come out home
with me. She doesn't
want to go to her
home. She says her
dad is sore at her and

growls so much. If
you would rather she
didn't come or if your
mother is more sick
again then call me up
tomorrow and we'll
come some other Sunday
   With Love Mary

I wonder why he sent her a letter and cards? What could have been the special occasion? Or was it just because and part of his plan to win her over more.
I wonder how sick his mother was at this time?
Not a whole lot here. Just an average everyday kind of letter.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

I think this picture is from the 1920's. Grandpa is sitting there in front but I don't know who is sitting behind him.

This is Grandpa's brother Alfred in their living room in St. Paul Oct. 1, 1960.

In this picture are my cousins David, Paul and Howie. Taken in the 70's I think.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you enjoy your weekend.
I also hope you can come back again for some more faded history.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 22, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you enjoyed your weekend. I did. We had gone up to Tim's Hill, Wis. highest point, To see the color of the trees before it was gone. It was worth it. A lot of other people had the same idea.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Mary.

As always for those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

              Rib Lake, Wis.
              Sept. 22, 1926
Dear Howard:-
  I got your letter this
morning and certainly
was surprised to get it.
You certainly must
like to write better
than I do or you
couldn't write so often.
And I don't see how
you can always think

of so much to write. I
guess your head. ( I mean
the inside of it) must be
bigger than mine or
maybe it's your heart.
Mrs. Hipke didn't say
anything about you being
up here. She doesn't care
as long as I do my
work.
My throat is all O.K.
again. So now I can

scold as much as ever
I'm glad it is because
I could hardly eat and
you know how hard
that would be on me.
Of course I don't eat
such a lot but then I
like to eat once in a
while. Well so long
and good luck and
don't work too hard now
that it isn't raining.
           Love from Mary.

Well not a lot here. I wonder how much Grandpa wrote when he wrote a letter. It's one thing I hope that someday I will find an answer but I know the odds of finding one of his letters to someone is very low.
It's good to know she is feeling better and that her throat is feeling better.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No idea who this is. I think the name of the studio is Lawson. From Wesssington Springs, S.D. I wish I knew when it was taken.

No idea who these young people are or when it was taken.

Someone named Judy. Someone classmate, but who's?

Well that's all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a good week and hopefully you can drop by again real soon for another letter and random pictures from history that has all most faded completely away.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 16, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis

Hello Friends,
The end of the week is upon us again. I hope it doesn't  goes too fast.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary. This one is a little longer this time. 4 pages.

For those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                    Rib Lake Wis.
                    Sept. 16, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   Well, seeing you quit
Rib Lake this week I'll
have to write again.
  Mary Schneider was
up here until just now
so I heard all the latest
news. You see I never
go out that's the reason
I never know whats

going on in Rib Lake.
I was out yesterday.
I had the baby out
all afternoon. That's
what you call being in
safe company.
So Ed is really going out
west. What's the trouble?
Didn't he and Luella make
up any more?
I guess Anton Kauer &
Joseph and Walter Schneider
are coming home pretty

soon.
You asked how George D.
was. Well, I guess he's all
right again. Mary D. said
he worked again Monday
nite.
Say Howard, I don't know
if we can come Sunday. I
forgot all about it that
Anton is s'pose to get
my cousin from Chelsea.
Maybe he can get them

in the forenoon if we
don't have to stay in church
too long and then we'll come.
Aren't you coming to
R.L. some time or are
you too busy now. And
say if we don't come up
you are coming anyhow
aren't you? Or doesn't Thomas
want to stay home next
Sunday. Your mother isn't
any worse is she?
Anna Mae asked me once  Love Mary

I wonder if Ed did go out west and how far west did he go?
I wonder how often Grandpa went to Rib Lake?
I hope his mother (my Great Grandma) was not to sick for to long.
Just more questions that will not be answered because they have already faded away.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No idea who this could be or exactly when it was taken.

This is I think Grandma's parents but I don't know who the young girl is.

This is Joe Weinzatl. Someones classmate.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I do have one thing for you to think about. If you could put a time capsule that would be open in a hundred years, what would you put in it?  Just something for you to think about.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 14, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
It's me again. I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was quiet. it is starting to get cooler out. I started putting away my out door summer decorations and trimmed a few plants. I know there are things in other places that are spinning out of control. The weather for one. Maybe  a hundred years from now they will looking back on these events as history that has faded from anyone memory.
Enough of that, here is the next letter from Mary.

For those who find it hard to read, here is what it says:

Dear Howard:-
   This won't be a
very long letter but I
just want to let you know
that I'm still alive and
not mad.
  I went to get your
pictures but they weren't
finished yet so I couldn't
send them.

How is your mother?
And how did you get
home? All right I hope.
I went to see Mary
Schneider this afternoon
then I had my hair
cut and then I went to
see Mary Daubest. She
works at Kalmons Restaurant.
Then Albert Ziemke came
to see her and I went
for a ride with them

Say I guess I better
quit now else this
letter won't go out tonite
any more
           Love from M.K.

Not a whole lot here to comment on. I wonder what kind of pictures she was going to pick up for Grandpa. Have I already shown some of them to you?
I wonder if Mary Daubest and Albert Ziemke were an item back then?
I wonder how long Kalmon's Restaurant was around? I know a number of Kalmon's, I wonder if they are related to the owners of it.
Just more things that have past into a forgotten history never to be known of again.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is Grandpa standing on top of the hay pile. I don't know what year. Maybe it was one of the ones he had Mary pick up.

No idea what year this one was taken but notice the three little ones on the right side. They are three of Grandpa and Grandma's boys.

This is Bob. From the class of '56. No idea what his last name is.

Well that's about all I have for you today.
I hope you can come back again soon for some more Faded History.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy
