Christmas Cards: Dec. 20 & 21, 1929 Saint Paul, Minn.

Dear Friends,
I hope you were able to stay dry this last weekend. It was wet here. Not as wet as Texas. I can't hardly imagine experiencing that kind of disaster. My heart goes out to all who are having to deal with it.
I was not able to go hiking because of the rain. I'm hoping this next week we will be able to get the hiking done for the year, before the different hunting seasons start.
Anyway, here are a couple of Christmas cards:

 With Hearty Good wishes for
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

(On the back)
From Alfred & Selma
and Lois Marie

It was addressed to both Howard & Thomas Johnson.

Sincerely wishing you
a very happy Christmas followed by
other days just as happy

From Emma Roseen

This one was addressed only to Thomas.

I like these old style Christmas cards. Just very simple.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Dr. L. Gillmor Long (inset) climbed 50 feet up a ladder, hung by his right hand as he worked
left handed, and amputated the arm of John McCoy, who was trapped in the cab of his crane
(shown here) at the Lowell Gas & Light Co in Lowell, Mass. McCoy had been pinned to a steel
girder (indicated by arrow) when the cab broke loose. He is in serious condition, but was given
an even chance Thursday to recover from the ordeal, which occurred in zero weather.

Someone wrote on the side: "Died one week later".

I wonder if a doctor today would do this same thing to save someone in this same position.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

I scanned two pages at once because some of the jokes are continued on another page.
Enjoy.

Here is a random picture:

This is the way they use to do the hay. I think, maybe, Grandpa might be on the tractor that is working the baler. Not sure who is driving the first one.

Well, that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a great week.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Mamie: Nov. 4, 1929 Brantwood, Wis.

Dear friends,
How was the rest of your week? Mine was good. No drama for me.The weather is a little on the cooler side which I enjoy. It is looking like it might be a rainy kind of weekend. I may not be going hiking. It's going to be a busy weekend with other things. That is if it doesn't rain. I will be spending time with my Granddaughter. Anyway, here is a letter from Mamie. The page was to large to fit in the scanner so I had to fold it in half making it look like four pages rather then two:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, I will do my best to type it up:

                               Brantwood, Wis.
                                Nov. 4, 1929
Dear Howard
How did the party turn out?
I thought sure I'd have to walk
back for awhile. Did you notice
when I left? Or maybe you would
have taken pity on me at last you
should forget would have been
your fault Ha Ha But just the same it
seemed nice to see you again.
for it's been quite a while. When did
the party break up? When I taught
there we stayed until after five in the
morning that is. a few of us did.
We sure made "Whoopee" that
night. The same bunch wasn't
there as when I taught twas
a swell bunch we had. You said
I should let you know when I come
home i think I shall go home this
week end as I don't expect to be so
very busy. I forgot my gloves home
last time so I must cold for them
and a few other things I want to
get. Pearl coaxed and coaxed me
last weekend but I had too much
school work and other odd jobs to do.
I'll come either Friday evening
or Saturday morning. So come
over Saturday night, Hey? I'm ready
for another good and Hot date
with you. Hot diggity!

Too bad it there is any snow I'm
afraid it will melt Ha. Ha. I hope
the weather stays nice for some
time yet. Gee, it's been cold enough
already though I nearly froze. I should
have had you here to keep me warm
or how about it? Could you keep
me warm or would you get me
hot? The latter no doubt. Don't take
me evilly whatever you do. Do you
know the story about the man
who was naughty "twice"? it's
pretty good. A week ago Saturday
night we were to a party at East Hackett.
We had a swell time. All the old bunch
of Emery was there. Gee, I sure enjoyed
myself. Oh- I enjoyed myself all right
with you at Morner but otherwise
I didn't care much for it. My
by-gone sweetie wasn't even there.
Maybe I'll have a chance to enter-
tain you by the fireside some cold
winter evening if you work at Knox
this winter as you said you might.
It would be nice to have someone
around whom I know. Don't wear
out those records you said you
got last summer. I want to listen
to them too before they are worn out.
When are you going to broadcast?
Write to me if you aren't too busy
fishing? Why the question mark after fishing?

(written along the side)
You won't show this letter to anyone will you? My letter sounds bad, but I'm not.

I wonder what kind of party she was talking about?
It sound like she was a teacher. I'm not impressed with her handwriting. How about you?
So of the things she was implying, they sound a bit on the naughty side. I wonder if they "snuggled" in front of a fire. This I'll never know and more then likely don't want to know.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

The question before the house is, How did this foot long salt
water trout get in this five gallon jug, with its three-quarters
inch neck? Experts who saw it pulled from the water at Sarasota,
Fla., think the fish swam in as a fingerling, had food in abun-
dance washed into his home and then just grew.

I hope they were able to get it out of the jug.

Here are three pages from "Bedtime Laughs":

More jokes about Love, Love, Love. Enjoy.

Here is a random picture:

Written on the back: Aunt Frances, Gotfred Weberg, Uncle Fred, Ma & Uncle Herbert.

Ma is Grandma. No idea what year this was taken.

Well that's about all I have to share with you.
I hope your weekend is a good one.
Don't forget to come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Genevieve Smith: Oct. 24, 1929 Lugerville, Wis.

Dear Friends,
One hope everyone had a good weekend. And if you live in the US. the eclipse. I took the day off so I could see what ever I could from my back yard. I'm glad I bought a pair of solar glasses. It was not total here but with the glasses I could watch it happen without hurting my eyes. I hope a lot of you were able to do the same thing. It will be a long time before we get to see another one again like that. I'll have to save the glasses as a part of my history to show another generation what we used.
Anyway, here is a letter from Genevieve:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

I don't know about you, but I like her art work.
She really sounds like she was a very active girl. She got around to a lot of different places in a very short time.
It sounds like a number of people were enjoying different drinks that if I'm not mistaken, were not suppose to be enjoyed at that time.
But she was right about Thomas being shy. He never married.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

First Dr. Gordon E. Mordoff of Wilmette, Ill., was arrested for
kidnaping Reginald, 3, then he obtained the boy from Mar-
garet Mann, who says she is the boy's mother, on a writ of at-
tachment. Now the infant has been ordered into where a
judge will play the part of Solomon in deciding its parentage._
A.P. Photo.

I wonder how long this battle over this little boy went on. To bad they didn't have DNA testing back then. Or at least I don't think they had it back then.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

For all that are in love or thinking about it. Enjoy.

Finally here is a random picture:

Dear Friends,
Well it's the end of another week. How was your week? Mine was the same old same. Nothing to really say about my life, now in other places that's another story. These things with each day are now apart of history. Will they be remembered the way the happened or will they be twisted into something else?
Anyway, here is the next letter from Genevieve:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

I wonder if her brother was able to get the car he wanted to get when he wanted to get it.
Lugerville is an unincorporated little town that is located on county road F about 8 miles northwest of Phillips.
I wonder how she ended up going there for a month.
I wonder what Grandpa listened to the most on the radio at that time.

Here is a picture form the scrap book:

I wonder how long this story was in the news.
What did happen to this little boy?

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

The one at the top of page 24 is the rest of a joke that I showed last time. Enjoy.

I got almost all the picture in one container now. So, right now I'm just picking one out randomly. This is what was chosen:

Not sure right now if I've already shown you one like this one before or not. No idea when it was taken or who is in it.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.

G.Smith: Dan Franklin Camp Lugerville, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was good. The weather was not bad. Sunday the husband and I hiked 11.5 miles. We should be able to get Taylor county done in two more hikes. Then we will be stopping for the year. I hope to start again next spring by Cornell. I hope.
Anyway, this next letter I'm sure who it is from . It might be someone called G. Smith. I'm not sure if it is the right time or not because once again Uncle Peter took the stamp so the date is not there. This letter was addressed to Grandpa and Thomas:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, I hope to copy it to the best of my interpretation of what is written:

Once I turned the envelope over I realized it was from Genevieve. She must have been working at one of the logging camps. This woman must have been a very interesting person to know.
I did my best to rewrite it but some of the words were a little more challenging then others.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

This year old gray fox, said by Humane society officials to have been driven from the north woods
by lack of food, was cornered by police in a garage at 2478 N. Grant blvd. late Monday and will be
turned over to the zoo. Mrs. W. T. Lunch, 2568 N. Grant blvd., saw the animal on her front porch and
called police._ Journal Staff Photo.

I'm a little surprised the zoo took it. But it was a different time back then.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

They will put a smile on your face, so enjoy!

Finally, here is a random picture:

I thought since she was working at a logging camp, I would show you a logging picture.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Genevieve Smith: Monday, Westboro, Wis.

Dear Friends,
Well it's the end of another week. It was just an average kind of week for me. For my husband, not so good. He's working very long hours right now. Working a double shift three days this week and two more next week. He is not in a very good mood. The weather has been a kind of hit and miss thing some days.
Oh well, here is another letter from Genevieve. I think it should have been shown earlier because she mentioned Walter:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                  Westboro, Wis
                  Monday
Dear Howard:
Your very welcome
letter received this
morning, sure was
pleased to hear from you.
About Tuesday Nite
I can't say any thing
for sure as Ray is com-
ing to nite and they
want to go to Mansons
at Ogema, I don't know
whether they will stop
at Bert's when they
come down. Will
let you know just
when and where etc

I can go if you go
any place Tuesday eve
Better be at Bert's as
that's always the place
we meet at. I saw
you and Walt last
nite, we were just
going to church now
ain't I realy good to
go to church on Sunday
nite_____ha! ha!
Honest to God
Howard you should
have been along with
my brother and I
Sunday, we went up
on 86 East of Ogema
Singing to beat Hell
got half way to

         2
to Spirit Falls and
then the blame thing
ran out of gas, and
we had to walk at
least 7 miles and
Damn it was no fun
either, then we didn't
have any oil but
managed to drive to
Ogema if after we
had bought gas.
Thanks for the
news sure was
good____
You be up at
Bert's to nite (Monday)
it it don't rain) or else
Tuesday at about 7;30

then wait for us
there. If Ray and Mrs.
are along you tell
them you want to
go with me or else
Ray will make Mrs. B
go with you, and I
with him, Don't tell
him I told you so
tho,
Haven't any more
time this morning so
must close, Be good to
yourself.
Excuse my blots and
blunders for when it
rains it often thunders.
                  Love
ans          Genevieve
soon

Like I said before I think this letter is out of order, sorry.
I wonder what they were singing when they ran out of gas.
Would you walk 7 miles if you ran out of gas?
They must have hung out a lot at Bert's. It must have been the hot spot for them at that time.
I wonder if Ray and Mrs. B were involved or just friends. I guess it's another bit of history that is gone forever.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Mrs. Sally Mowry, above, a resident of Kenosha 32 years,
traces her ancestry directly to Warner Washington, a first
cousin of President George Washington.

I wonder where her family is today and do they still claim the same.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Enjoy. They will give you something to smile about today.

And here is a random picture:

No idea who they are or when it was taken.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy
