Gladys: Oct. 11, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
Well, survived another weekend. My cold is about gone. With the occasional cough because of a tickle in my throat. The weather is being it's usual up and down temps. But that's January in Wisconsin.
Anyway here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                   Chicago Ill
                  Oct 10-32
Dear Howard:-
    Have just read your
letter and as I have a few
minutes now. I shall write
a few lines, but do excuse
my stationary as the night
nurse is asleep so I can't get
in my room for paper.
This is quite a difference
after the fancy letter paper

you had this time. Gee
it looks swell and I am
sure it will be a good
club, if you fellows make
up your minds to make
it so. I thought Edward
was one of the directors
I was quite surprised
to see him listed as
the vice pres. Have you
had another election?

We have a horrid rainy day here
today, for a change as we
have had such delightful foul
weather so far.
Last Thursday Aunt Hildegard
Halt and I went to call on
Selma Walin & Hilding. They are
all well. Then in the evening
Linnea & I went to church
with my Aunt & children
(Holt) a missionary was the
speaker for the evening

and you can bet it was
interesting. You see I had
24 hrs. off on acct. of shifting
Miss Gustafson is on nights
now & I am on days for 2
weeks & then we shift again
This is my first day duty service
we took our patient to the
hosp. 8 months ago.
We moved her home the
day after I got back from
my vacation. I seems nice

to be home here again
with her and she is
improving so much
as she walked 200 steps
between 2 people yesterday
when we had her in
the rank in her wheeled
chair.
I am glad you enjoyed
the movie but as

for thanking me for a
treat you need next
because I should thank
you for driving. I hope
Edie & Roy were along. I
have never heard if they
were or not.
Be sure & send me
those clippings when

Well there is no news
here only work, work.
& I am thankful
I can tell you.
Oh! yes Sat. evening
I went over to see
Mary & she wouldn't give
me your picture back
so look out.

ever it comes off. What
are they waiting for
anyway?
send me a slice of
your banquet will
ya! "Ha Ha" I hope
you want to eat
rabbit.

You may have a girl
first thing you know
She is very nice and I will
show you her picture
when I am home
some time She is
coming up to visit me
in Ogema soon.

Well no more news
Greetings to Thomas
        as ever
         Gladys

I know it looks long but it is written on index size paper.
I wonder if the club she is talking about it the "Sunnyside Gun & Rod Club" that was mentioned in another letter.  I wonder who the president was at that time.
How long did she work for the same person?
I wonder why the woman had to have help walking again.
I wonder who Mary is that she mentioned.
I wonder what kind of clippings he sent her.
Enough questions that will never be answered.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:
(scanned in to pieces)

Erosion is Blamed for the floods and dust damage pictured in last Sunday's Roto-Art
Section. By judicious planting the soil conservation service is trying to put obstacles in the way
of the rushing winds and waters. The scene above shows eroded land near Wheatfields, N.M.,
where topsoil two feet thick has been washed away.

A picture that was part of the dust bowl of the 1930's.

Now pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

Enjoy.

Finally, a random picture:

This is one of those two pictures in one. It looks like the kids are posing with an old stock tank in one. And someone else standing by a shed. No idea what year this was.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope all have a good week. If you find yourself in Medford on Feb. 1, 2,& 3, come see our little show of "Escanaba in Da Moonlight".
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Gladys: Sept. 26, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you have a good week. Mine could have been better. I've got a cold. Not real bad. Just as long as it's gone by next week. Thursday, Friday and Saturday to more be more accurate. Why you ask? Those are the days we have are presenting our next play to the public. "Escanaba in Da Moonlight". If you're a hunter, it's a must see show.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, I'll do my best to rewrite it the best I can for those that find it hard to read:

                  Chicago Ill
                   Sept 25-32
Dear Howard:-
Well here I am at last. I
spent 3 days as Aunt Hildigards &
then went on duty Wed night &
Thur. Now we moved our
patient home in an ambulance.
She sure is delighted to be at
home again after 8 months in
the hospital.
First I must tell you that the
first thing I saw when I came in

the house here was your
letter on the lowboy in the
hall & next was the lovely
box of candy. Thank you Howard,
but why did you do that?
Dad wrote me that they
enjoyed the picture very much
& I hope you did. I loved it
Say in a few days go over
& see the picture we took
While I was on vacation.
Well Mr. president I hear you
have again had a meeting
of the Sunnyside Rod & Gun club.
I do hope every one will
do this bit as I think
its time something was
done like that.
Be sure & send me
those clippings you
promised to send me
as a girl here is very
interested as she was
out with him this
summer & never heard
about this trouble.
She met him as a
dance I guess.
Has Hattie or Freda come
home yet?
A vacation is nice
but its great to be back at

work though.
In 2 weeks Miss Gustafson
will change with me & go on
night duty & I on days. & so on
every 2 weeks we shift. It will
be so much nicer. Thou
working every night
Well so long. Write
me all the news &
give my best wishes to
Thomas.
    as ever
             Gladys
The candy was "delicious"
I'll send the pictures home in a day or so.

I wonder if she is only working for the one patient or if she is working at a hospital. I kind of think she is working for one person at a time. I wonder how long she did this kind of work.
I wonder what kind of thing they were doing for the Sunnyside Gun & Rod Club. How big of role did Grandpa play in this club?
I wonder what kind of pictures she is talking about.
What kind of candy did he send her?

Here is a picture from the scrap book no. 2: 1936

Rock at Camp Douglas, Wis. These massive natural formations- always interesting photographic
material, are the most characteristic features of the Wisconsin national guard training camp.

This is just one of many rock formations that you will find down by Juneau County. Plus there are other places in Wisconsin you will see these kinds of rock formations.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

A little bit of something for everybody. Enjoy.

Finally, here is a random picture:

Here is a picture of a picture. The date said it was taken Jul '68.
No clue why they took it or where this picture is now.

Oh well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope everyone has a good weekend.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Gertrude Frank

This should have been the first letter from her.
This was just the basic introduction someone would write for the first time.
I wonder what happened to her mother that she died when Gertrude was only 12.
I wonder if she was the oldest girl in the family that it was her responsibility to keep house for her Dad.
She was a very clean girl.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:1936

Traffic on the Electric Co.'s right of way at N. Eighth and W. Clybourn sts. was halted several
hours Monday night after the driver of a big truck, Edward B. Steinke of Hatley, Wis. missed a
turn and wandered off Clybourn st. on to the ties. Steinke was fined $100 Tuesday in the district
court on a drunken driving charge.- Journal Staff Photo.

I wonder who underlined the name of the guy and where he was from.

Finally a random picture:

Kind of looks like it does right now . Not sure what year this was taken.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.

Estella Oros: Sept. 22, 1932 Gary Ind.

Dear Friends,
Well the end of the week. How was yours? Mine was on the quiet side. But there was excitement the other night. There was a report of someone with a gun. According to the news there was a five hour stand off with a guy who fired about five shoots in a house. After talking to him they were able to get him to give himself up with no one getting hurt. No idea what lead up to this but I'm sure over time more details will come out.
Anyway here is a letter from Estella Oros:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                     Your friend
                      Estella Oros
1135 Harrison Blvd
Gary Indiana

I'm not sure how many letters there will be from Estella.
I'm not sure if she was interested in Grandpa or if she was just trying to help girlfriends out who were looking for the one and only.
I hope she was able to save her pie's before that burned to much.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

Two coast guardsmen are shown Sunday as they seized a man
allegedly looting a flooded store in Springfield, Mas. Coast
and national guardsmen are on duty throughout the stricken east
to prevent disorders.- A.P. Wirephoto.

I wonder what kind of things he was trying to loot.

Edna: Sept. 13, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was quiet. It could have been warmer but at least we are not experiencing the problems they are have out east and west. It did snow, but not a lot.

Anyway, here is the next letter from Edna:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                              September 13-32
Dear Howard-
Say, how about that letter you
promised to write me!
I was very much disappointed
in not seeing you when I was
home. You were the only person I
called on too-- and then you
were out "nutting". Thomas told
me you were out picking nutz.
What wouldn't I do for some of
those nuts we used to gather
up there when I was a kid.
My mouth waters for some.
But I certainly was disappointed,
because I always see you
when I come home. I had a
couple of nice girls with me
too. One can never tell what
might have developed from
this meeting-- maybe you would
be opening up your house in
the spring. You know I've heard
of those happenings.

               -2-
I have been working awfully hard
since my vacation. In fact, I still
am- sometimes as late as 10 o'clock.
Of course I get paid extra for it,
which isn't so bad.
I haven't been to a show for
such a long time-- not since
before my vacation. Elsa ( the girl
I had home with me) and I are
going tomorrow night. Haven't de-
cided what show yet.
Well, Howard, I just wanted to
tell you I'm still looking for that
letter you said you were writing me.
Also, how sorry I am not to have
seen you.
                   Sincerely,
                      Edna
P.S.- Suppose you have seen Gladys
by this time. I'm writing her today

I have moved recently to 1325 Ardmore Ave.

She also included a little poem that was clipped to the first page . "Clara bell Cow". It's a cute little poem.
I also like the little picture with a chick and a fake duck.
I wonder if it was her way of getting his attention to write to her again.
As the nuts he was picking, I'm thinking it was hickory nuts. But I could be wrong.
She still sounds like she is a very busy girl at work.
I wonder what show she was able to see.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:1936

This gap was left construction rail line at the Mississippi river nine-foot channel dam at Genoa, 13 miles south of La Crosse, after an ice jam swept out 370 feet of a timber trestle bridge. engineers said destruction of the bridge will delay pouring of concrete on the project for about month.

This is a picture that could be like what is going on out East today.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956 :

Enjoy.

Finally, here is a random picture:

One of the many cows they had. I think this one is either a bull or a steer.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by soon for more for more Fading History.

Ann Choka: Sept. 9, 1932 Gary Ind.

Dear Friends,
Well, it's the end of another week. And it's been snowing and turning colder, again. The rest of my week was nice and quiet, just the way I like it.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Ann:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                         Sept. 9,
                            1932
Dear Howard;
            I received your most wel-
comed letter and was glad to hear from
you, how are you? Gee its been a long time
since you have written to me, and I haven't
answered you, you'll have to forgive me, I'm
so busy working 10 hr. a day six days a week
guess you'll believe me won't you? how are
you enjoying yourself out in Ogema going
to places such as parties or dances or
any place where you could have fun,
you know ever since I left Wisconsin i
always dream of being there, and when I
a wake I find myself here isn't that
awful.? I wish I could met some real
people, some day. Howard the only
I've met real people is in Wisconsin
here the boys & girls are all together
different their mostly wild which I hate.
So I wish I could go back to Wisconsin
soon and get a job anywhere so

I could make a living, now you see I
was planning to go out there but my Dad's
layed off of work 2 weeks now I'm only
working in the family but it will change
some day, now I'll close answer
                              soon.
                          Your true friend
                               Ann.
                         1773 Polk St.
                             Gary Ind.
P.S. Please write me a lot of news.
             Excuse my writing

It sounds like she really wants to get back to Wisconsin where there are real people.
So I guess that makes me a real person.
I wonder how long her Dad was layed off?
And how long she supported her family?

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

Nelson Campbell, who was swept from a bridge at Mechanicille, N.Y., by flood waters, gets
a helping hand from undershirted Allen Van Decar, a school bus driver. But Van Decar tum-
bled into the raging waters himself. They were rescued by men who heard their shouts.- A.P. Wire-
photo.

It kind of reminds me of what California is dealing with right now.

Here are few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime laughs". 1956:

Enjoy.

Finally a random picture:

A postcard from Ogema. No idea what year this is from.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good weekend and if you are in Wisconsin, stay warm.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for some more Fading History.
Till then.
