Flambeau Paper Company: Oct. 6th& 23rd 1933; Park Falls Wis.

Dear Friends,
Well the weekend is finally here. It looks like it suppose to a fairly nice one around here. I would like to go hiking but I want to wait till the creeks are not so full. I need to get back out in the woods soon. The pull is getting stronger to start hiking.
Anyway, here are a couple of letters from the Flambeau Paper company:

Since they are typed I don't see any reason to rewrite them.

It looks like Grandpa was looking for places to sell some logs.
I wonder if he got the contract.
Flambeau Paper Company is still in business today. But it has been having to do some cutting back lately. Times are always changing. Sometimes for the good sometimes not so good.

Here is a story from the scrap book. March 19, 1936 The Milwaukee Journal:

This is a story that was on the front page.

Here is a joke from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

So true.

Finally, here is a random picture:

I thought that since there were a couple of letter concerning logging, I would show you one.
No idea when this was taken.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a very nice weekend.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Helen Balusik: Sept. 21, 1933; Phillips, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. I did. I even took a couple of walks down the and back. About 2 miles each time. I so want to start going into the woods. It finally feels like spring. There better not be anymore set backs.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Helen:

As always, for those of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                 Phillips, Wis.
                Sept 20-33
Dear Howard:-
   Was glad to hear
from you so will
be prompt & do my
part in answering.
Am glad you wrote
to your girl friend. I'm
sure she will answer
real soon.
I saw her last night
& she asked how
soon you will write
but I told her I didn't
know- she just had
to have patience &
wait. So she said
she was going to

look for the mail
man every day.
So be a good boy &
write often to her,
won't you Howard?
I guess she gets lone
some for a man's
company.
Yes it is one of those
girls that live in
Hacketh that you
asked. They have three
girls & all of them
are as nice as can
be, but I don't know
any of their ages-
Perhaps you would
like them all as
much as I do if

           2
you were acquainted.
My sister & I think
them the best of our
girl friends. I wouldn't
want you to be writing
to someone that I
thought wasn't much
good. So I hope you
& Marie learn to
like each other by &
by. Maybe you are
real particular in
the sort of girl you
would like, are you?
Wish I knew what
type you do like-
In case you run
out of work you
know we have

the rest of this week
to pick potatoes so
you'll know where to
go, won't you? I
suppose you have
plenty to pick at your
place. Maybe Marie
would need some
help picking spuds.
If she invites you
don't refuse to come.
Well, I'll have to
quit now for I
feel pretty tired after
working all day-
Good to sleep on a
cool night like this.
wasn't last night
terribly windy?

          3.
So let me hear from
you again, won't
you- I wonder if
your girl friend will
answer right away
well, she said she
would so I guess you
won't have to wait
so long for an answer.
  So be good & to
your new gal too.
    Your friend
          Helen

Boy she is really trying to get them hooked up. I do wonder if she was a good match maker.
Wonder how many potatoes they got that year.
It does sound like a normal fall at that time.

Here is a story from the scrap book March 19, 1936 The Milwaukee Journal:

I wonder if there was ever a reason gave for it. I thought maybe it was Easter time. But Easter was April 12th that year.

Here is a joke from the the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

I'm not sure how to respond to that. Just how do you dent a steak so bad it can't be sent back?

Finally, here is a random picture:

No idea who this is. It might have been taken in 1958. Someones classmate.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a very nice week.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Marie Johnson: Sept. 21, 1933; Prentice, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was uneventful. I'm just so glad that finally the temps are starting to get warmer. I so look forward to the snow melting totally away. Plus I do not have to work on Saturday. Yeah for me!
Anyway, here is a letter from Marie Johnson:

As always, for those of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                  Prentice Wis
                   Sept. 21, 1933
Dear Unknown Friend:
                               I received your
letter was surprised, but never-
theless I enjoyed getting it.
Well first of all I will describe
myself. I am not such a little
girl as Helen. I am tall or other
words big. Have dark brown
hair blue eyes. Was born and
raised here, but have spent
number of years in Chicago.
Have been home two months
this summer. I am a milliner,
and business has been so slow,
so rather working part time I
spent it at home.
Expect to go back any day. Perhaps

Saturday. Fell bad Helen didn't
fix this up before, but we could
arrange to meet. I have a telephone
"number 139731 Prentice" If you have
a car it won't be difficult to
come up.
I don't dance either, but enjoy shows,
and like parties and in general
like a good time.
I have known Helen a long
time and always enjoy to be with
her as she is full of fun.
I live miles north of
Prentice on the old north
highway 13. and a quarter of
a mile west from the Enterprise
school. first house to your
right after crossing the rail-
road track. Or perhaps you

rather call me up.
I have number of friends in
Westboro so have been down there
couple of times this summer.
Well be very anxious to hear
from you again. I did enjoy your
letter, and got a kick out of wirting
to a unknown friend.
                      Your unknown friend
                                 Marie

I do wonder how big she was. I hope she was able to find that special someone.
I also wonder if he checked her before the next letter.
I look forward to learning more about her.

Here is a story from March 19, 1936 from The Milwaukee Journal:

I wonder how often this problem had then and if it is still going on today. Or have laws been passed that have helped protect the young fish.

Here is a joke from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

So true.

Finally, a random picture:

No idea when this was taken. it looks like they were starting to clear a new area of land.

Well, that's all have to share with you today.
I hope you have a very nice weekend. I know mine will be.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Helen Balusik: Sept. 18, 1933 Phillips, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a better weekend then we had here. That is is you don't live in Wisconsin. I think everywhere in Wisconsin set new records for snow fall for this time of year. I want to say that the snow is done but I think there might be more coming on Wednesday. All I can say is, no hiking for me for a longer time then I was planning. At this rate it will be till the end of May before things will be just right for me to start.
Oh well, enough whining, here is the next letter from Helen:

As always, for of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                 Phillips, Wis.
                  Monday A.M.
Dear Howard:-
  Am sorry I didn't
get around to answer
because I was waiting
to see if I could see
this girl friend I was
telling you about .
Well did you go see
the fair the other week?
Didn't see you any
where. I was there
only on Thursday.
It wasn't so bad
after all, did you think
so?
My brother went to
Chicago Saturday

morning to see the
fair & visit with
my sister during
his vacation.
well, Howard my
girl friend wants you
to write first, you know
the girls feel its the
man's duty to do that.
So won't you do that
Howard?
You perhaps would
like her for I think
a lot of her- She is
a very fine girl- a
good cook & very
comical- You wouldn't
be lonesome with
her company I'm sure.

            2
I told her about you
but I never said how
we got aquainted so
if I were you I wouldn't
tell her either. I just
said we met through
other friends. She is
very interested & is
anxious to hear from
you- so be sure & write
this week for she is
going away around
Saturday, will you
do that?
Well Howard I must
quit or else I will
miss the mail man
& then you will have
to wait longer.

So be good boy &
write again, won't
you & let me know
if you wrote to her
will you?
   So by by
     Your old friend
            Helen
Here is the address

(tell her all about your
self & describe your
self. see?)  She likes them
                     tall like you are.

It sounds like she is really trying to find someone for her friend.
There are a few letter coming up from Marie and Helen.
I have not read them in awhile so I will learn about them the same time you do.

Here is a story from march 19, 1933, The Milwaukee Journal:

I sure do hope they got Herman back.
I do wonder what the story is behind having a skull named "Herman". And how it got to be their Pride and joy.

Here is a joke from "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

What would be the difference between pouring succotash or spinach on someone?

Finally, here is a random picture:

It says, "Freddie". No clue who he is or who he graduated with.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till next time.

Ethel and Earl G. Aug. 26, 1933

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was so so. I do have to work this Saturday, darn. Oh well, that's life. The weather is suppose to not be very nice. Rain with maybe some snow thrown. Winters way of still hanging on just a little longer.

Anyway, here are two little notes that were not in envelopes. One is dated and one not.:

As always, for those of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

Dear Howard,
Its me again
Say was wondering
if you'll do me a
favor to-morrow
night I'd like to
have you take us
to wellington. If you
aren't busy come over
this way ---------
- to-morrow then we
can talk more about
it okay?
  Will be seeing
you
   Love Ethel

I wonder if he picked them up and if they were able to talk about it. I wonder what it was?

    Earl Georgeson

I'm not sure if I got some of the words right. I tried.
It almost sounds like someone got a horse and maybe wanted to return it.
At least that's how I understood it.
How about you?

Here is a story from  The Milwaukee Journal Thursday, March 19, 1933:

It's to bad he had to feel like that was the only way out.
He must have made a huge mess of things.
How many other people lives were messed up from his actions?

Here is a joke from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

 An old favorite.

Finally a random picture:

Maybe this is the horse in question.
Ya never know.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Helen Balusik: Aug. 31, 1933 Phillips, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a very nice weekend. Mine was too short. I'm no fan of working Saturdays or two hours earlier on a Monday. Too much work and not enough time or people to get things done right. I just hope things ease up soon.
Enough whining, it's been awhile since there was a letter from Helen, so here it is:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                    Phillips, Wis.
                     Aug. 30-33
Dear Howard:-
   How are you all
this time, I wonder?
I have been home
since first of June &
so I happened to
notice there was a
Xmas card from you
here. Its funny my
father didn't mail
it to me when I was
away. Have been
thinking of dropping
you a line since but
somehow always let
it go by.
How are you behaving
now adays. Am
wondering if you
still are single or

a married man?
In case you are not
 married- I know of
a lonely girl that I
would like you to
meet sometime.
She is planning on
going to the city soon
but in case you
would like to write
to her then why I
could get the address
for you.
I was over there a
few days ago &
she said how she
hates to go back to
the city- & then some
one mentioned why
don't you find a
farmer & get married
then you can live

         2
out here & not have
to be going back & forth
to the city. So I thought
if I could only find
a partner for her &
make her happy?
What do you think
about it? I haven't
told her about you
until I see what you
say? Would be
lovely if you & her
settled around here
somewhere then I
sure would be over
real often. I don't
really know how old
she is but must be
about thirty two or so
to my idea- Is quite
tall- blue eyes &
weighs about 150 lbs.

a Swedish girl so you
see both of you are of
the same nationality.
I suppose you have
a nice gal spotted by
now & its too late
to disturb you, is it
not?
Do you know this
Mildred Bjorkland?
She teaches our school
this year for the second
time & she says what
fun you folks have
around there going
to parties_ She is
quite gay isn't she,
altho I haven't met
her personally.
Have you been
to the World's Fair

         3
yet Howard? i hope
to get back in time
this fall so I can go-
Have to go by myself
since no one else
offers to take me (Ha Ha)
I have often thought
of you since we quit
writing & wondered
how you were.
I suppose by now
you have a big car
all of your own
am I not right?
I am baking bread
this afternoon so
I can do some
writing in between
time!
Are you coming to
the fair to Phillips

next week? I suppose
I will be there as
usual. We usually go
on a Thursday night
& Friday- would
like to see you out
there too- can you
make it?
Well Howard, if
you are interested
in meeting my friend
some time, will you
write or write
anyhow & tell me
how you are be behaving
won't you?
       I remain
    your old friend
     Helen Balusik

it has been awhile since there was a letter from her. She must have been spending time in Chicago. I wonder what she did while she was there.
I wonder if Grandpa ever met her friend. I do wonder how tall she was.
I think Grandpa did go to the Worlds Fair that year.
I'm sure he went to the Phillips Fair also.
As for him behaving, that's still up in the air.
I do wonder why her father never sent the Xmas card to her but still saved it for when she came back.

Here is a story from the scrap book. Thursday, march 19, 1936. from The Milwaukee Journal:

Very interesting story. Real news or fake?

Here is a joke for the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

Caught in the act.

Finally, here is a random picture:

Grandma Miller's 88th birthday 1959.

I wonder if I ever met her?

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good week.

Estella Oros: June 19, 1933 Gary Ind.

Dear Friends,
I hope your week was a good one. Mine was fine until I found out I have to work Saturday plus start two hours earlier on Monday. No one at work is in a very good mood. With all the over time we have to put in tempers are getting shorter and shorter. I wish they would start to think about the work force they have and stop over committing us.
Oh well, enough whining. Here is a the next letter from Estella:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                           June 19, 1933
Howard Old Pal

                     xxx

Boy does she want to get out of Gary. I wonder it she ever left. And if she did where did she end up.
There was a picture included. Very bad to see. I did my best to see if it could be made out. Here it is, you be the judge:

It says Estella on the back. I did the best I could to at least see that there is a body in the picture. But it did not work well.
History that has faded about totally away.

Here an story from The Milwaukee Journal, Thursday, March 19, 1936:

I'll be trying to show as many of the stories as I can from this page of the Milwaukee Journal. Some are too big to scan right. I will try the best I can.

Here is a joke from the "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

 Anything to entertain yourself.

Here is a random picture:

Taken during someone's class trip.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
 Till then.

Gladys: June 9, 1933 ; Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone had a very nice weekend.Mine was good. It did snow Saturday morning, about 6 inches. I wasn't sure if the husband could get it plowed out but he did on Sunday. You would think that would be the end of the snow but it's not. It's snowing right now. When it's all said and done who could end up with over 11 inches more. I really wish Spring would stand up and tell winter to knock it off. It's Spring time. I want to see green grass and green trees. Plus the flowers should be getting ready to shine. It feels more like Christmas time not Easter time.
Enough whining, here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                       June 9-33
Dear Howard:-
  Well we got back here
O.K. but I've been so dreadfully
busy since our return. and
the weather has been so very
hot and still is. yesterday
the temperature was 97 in
our apt. So think what it
must have been outside
in the sun.
  Well seeing you went
riding with the other Gladys
on Sunday! you did not
get your picture taken
like your little brother

Now I wish you would send
me Thomas's address as I
want to mail a picture to
him so do send it soon please.
It was so nice of you to take
us too & from the station
again this time.
Well I must close now
hope to hear from you very
very soon.
            as ever
            Gladys
399 Fullerton pkwy
c/o C.A.Avery.

It sounds like she might have been visiting around here.
It sounds like it was very hot at that time. 97 in the apartment. I wonder how many people got heat stroke at that time.
I wonder if she got Thomas's address and if she was able to send him a picture.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

This little boy kind of looks like he could have been one of the Johnson boys.

Here is a joke from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

So true.

Finally a random picture:

This is Grandpa and Thomas. I think Grandpa is with the first team.
I wanted to show a more summer picture. Maybe Mother Nature will get a hint and finally make it stop snowing.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy
