Ed: March 18, 1930 Chicago, Ill.

Dear friends,
Well it's the end of yet another week. How was your week? Mine was very quiet. Just the way I like it. I'm looking forward to a nice weekend. I just hope Mother Nature will be nice.
Anyway, here is a letter from Ed. I think he has been mentioned by someone at one point. But Here is his own letter:

As always, for those that have a hard time reading it, here is what it says:

                        Chicago, Ill
                        Tuesday
Dear Friend Howard
well here goes letter no. 2
since my opperation. I am in
bed yet but am feeling fine can't get
enough to eat. They starved me
4 days after the operation. I didn't
get more then a little water and
now I just get a little broth and
some milk no solid food at all
I can tell you it's no fun. I have
been waiting everyday thinking I
would get a piece of toast or a boiled
egg. But I haven't got it yet. I wish
you would send me one in a letter
or some way. You don't understand
until you find out for yourself

I got an old Swedish fellow
in the same room as I am
in, his name is Peterson he's 71
years old. I have to laugh when I
hear him talk and when he gets
sore at some of the nurses
there is a lot of good looking
nurses here they sure are good
to a fellow to.
Just think my appendix
was all rotten it poisoned
my hole system that's all that
was wrong with me but that
was sure bad. Gladys says it
is your turn to write to her
and they all told me to greet
you and greet Tom from me
I hope to be home again in 3 or
4 weeks more.
   Your friend as ever
              Ed.

I think this is the first letter from him. But I know he has been mentioned and I may have shown a picture of him.
Can you imagine staying in the hospital as long as he says he was. Not today. Your in and out as soon as possible. But at least he had good looking nurses to look at.
I wonder what his room mate was in there for.
I do wonder how long he had a problem with his appendix before it was taken out.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

This power saw has attracted the notice of both Milwaukee city and county, whose officials have
asked to borrow it. Its owner, the town of Milwaukee, says, however, that the town's workmen
will have to do their own cutting first. The saw is shown cutting a channel to carry off expected flood
waters on the Milwaukee river near Silver Spring road.- Journal Staff Photo

I wonder how much this saw was used that year.

Here are a few pages form the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

For all you animal lovers. a few jokes to make you smile.

Now a random picture:

Bruce Rinehart. class of 1956

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Cousin Walter, Jan. 28, 1930 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you all had a good weekend. It was very hot around here. Way hotter then I like for this time of year. It is the beginning of Fall, I wonder how long it will take to really feel like it should.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Cousin Walter:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                    1/28/30
Dear Howard:-
            I received your
letter some time ago and have
been rather busy so didn't
have time to answer before.
             We have had a
real winter this year. Lots
of cold weather and snow,
but it is warming up a
bit now.
     How are you and
the girlfriend getting along?
I had a card from her for
New Years but never answered.
Says she is coming down soon.
well, well she better be careful
down here or she'll get mad.
How did you make out? Did

you ever use that rubber on her?
   Saw your old friend
Edna Swanson a couple of
months ago. She was up to
my sister's place.
    I am going around
pretty steady with a nice Swedish
girl. Met her in Oct. She is
the first Swede I ever went with
and she's pretty nice.
        Have some work to
do so I'd better get busy.
Let me hear from you once in
a while.
                        W. W.
                 3849 Janssen Ave
I hear Gen. Smith is pretty sweet on
Thomas. Don't say I said so.

Well this was a very interesting letter.
I wonder who Grandpa's girlfriend was at the time. It doesn't sound like it was Genevieve because she had a thing for Thomas. His girlfriend might have been someone that did not write letters or he didn't save any of them. I guess I'll never now.
I wonder how long  Walter was with this Swedish girl. Maybe he married her. I'll have to look in the book and tell you at a later date who he married.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Toot! Toot! All aboard! here goes the first trip of the quinmobile, the strange homemade device contrived by a California admirer and sent to the Dionne babies. Annette, at the wheel, looks fully capable as pilot, while Marie, Yvonne, Cecile and Emilie (left to right) are all braced for a fast ride.

I wonder how that thing worked. it looks kind of weird for a little girl to operate.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

A few laughs about animals. Enjoy.

Finally, a random picture:

No idea who this is or who the guy is that is photo bombing. or even what year.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope everyone has a good week.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Eluira La Lime: Jan. 14, 1930 Minneapolis, Minn.

Dear Friends,
Well, another week done. The weekend is here. For me, it will once again be a short one. I have to work on Saturday. Oh well, a little extra money for this time of the year.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Eluira:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

            Minneapolis Minn.
           Jan 13, 1930
Friend Howard,
  Suppose you think I have
forgotten you but here's proving to you
I haven't. have tho't of you
a number of times but things
haven't gone so good so haven't
wrote to anybody. Things are
breaking my way at last so can
be happy again. Am working
at the same place, yet.
What are you doing now for
excitement- last Sat. was the
first time I was out a good time
for months. We was to a Road house
and talk about a hot time.

I really enjoyed myself.
Who are you stepping around
with now? Anybody I know?
does Hattie Lundstrom live there
anymore. I believe that was
her last name. She had a brother
by the name of Clarence.
they lived close to Bert Johnson's
home.
Both my brothers are coming
for dinner tonight and my
sister so I must get busy-
suppose you know my sister was
living with me.
hope I get an answer to this
and will write a longer
letter next time
      I remain friend
            Eluire La Lime

p.s.
How are the roads over there? S'pose this
would be a poor time for a trip, much as
I'd love to.

I know I keep spelling her last name differently. I think it is Lime but I've left it Lince for the labels.
I think it has been awhile since there was a letter from her.
I suppose with the bad things that happened at the end of 1929 things were hard for a number of people in different ways.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

All animation and spirit and joy, Marie thrusts a thumb into
her mouth as though to say, "look at my fine new theeth!"
well she may be proud, for she has six uppers ans six lowers.
Always the tiniest of the Dionne quintuplets, Marie certainly looks
in fine fettle here, doesn't she?

I do wonder how many different pictures there wast taken of these girls.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

A few more drinks for you. Enjoy.

Now a random picture:

Now this is as random as you can get. No idea why someone took this picture. But I'm certain it was taken during someones class trip.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Genevieve Smith: Jan. 10, 1930 Westboro, Wis.

Dear Friends,
Hello. I hope this letter finds you all well. I'm, so so. Over the weekend we had to put our dog, Fawn, down. She had been not doing well for awhile and it finally got to the point it was time for her to go. She will be greatly missed.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Genevieve:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                       Westboro, Wisc.
                        Jan 10, 1930
Dear Howard,
Thank you ever so much
for the fine News. You

Oh yes Bundicks are moving
up town as they have a
mogage on the old farm for
475.00 and can't pay, they
haven't any more car as
they burnt theirs up running
with out water. So they have
to stay at home for a while
any way.- So Bert closed his
Station thats too bad. where
will the gang stop now? well
I don't go very much any more

                   2
its no fun any more
My sister is here from
Chicago now. So you'll have
to excuse my writing and
short letter as I'm in a
hurry as she is ready to
go up town with me already
She hasn't been home for six
years. She says she was a
recent Beauty contest at Chicago
isn't that Swell tho, I haven't
heard from Walter since I came
back from Lugerville. Have
several other places to work
but don't know when I'll go
yet. Must close. Please answer

                        Genevieve "Pete"

The beginning of 1930 did not sound like a good time for some people.
I wonder if the Bundicks lost their farm and how long it took them to get a car that worked. And did they pay more attention to the maintenance of it after that.
I wonder if they found a different place to hang out at.
How long was her sister around and did she eventually go back to Chicago?
So many unanswered questions.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

The chief actors in "The Country Doctor," the movie story which started in The Journal Green
Sheet Tuesday, are of course, the quintuplets, Jean Hersholt as Dr. Dafoe and Dorothy Peterson
as the nurse. All seven are shown here, with the two adults apparently having their hands full. The
movie itself is scheduled to be shown here starting Mar. 6- World Copyright, 1936 NEA Service, inc.

Just another picture involving the Dionne Quintuplets.
I guess now you will just have to find the movie and watch it.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" :

Enjoy! And bottoms up!

Here is a picture of Fawn:

Gone, but will never be forgotten. Will live forever in my heart.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Dear Friends,
Well that was a very warm week we just had here. And one with no rain, for a change. It sounds like this weekend will be a half and half kind . Some sun and some rain.
Anyway, here is the first letter from 1930 from Genevieve:

              "Genevieve"

Well it's the beginning of a new year. So far so good.
I wonder what kind of party Grandpa had and how many people were there for it.
I wonder what kind of records she listened to.
What was playing on the radio at that time?
I wonder how long she suffered with a sore throat.
So much to wonder about and never get any real answers.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Another story about the Dionne Quintuplets. 1936

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Enjoy a drink while you read these.

And here is a random picture:

A winter scene of the home place.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Helen Balusik: Dec.31, 1929 Phillips, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was nice and sunny, finally. I do wish it would have been better last weekend when I was on vacation. Oh well, mother nature will do what mother nature does.
Anyway, the next letter from Helen Balusik, is post mark Dec 31, 1929 but on the letter she wrote New Years Day. Don't know why the post mark is different then the date on the letter. Anyway, here it is:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                      Phillips, Wis.
                     New Years Day
Dear Howard:-
      Happy New Year
to you. Hope we all feel
as happy as we should.
I feel sleepy today- didn't
get home very early
because the bunch from
Church all gathered and
waited for New Year
last nite- also had a
big lunch at mid night.
We passed time away
by singing and read
the bible, I sure enjoyed it.
Was about the same
what I did last New Years.
I suppose you were
out just as late if

not later- how about it?
Well, I didn't make any
resolutions, I don't
think it pays- but I'll
try and make this the
best year if I can. One
thing see how long I can
be without raising
my temper (Ha Ha)
I sure enjoyed my Xmas
alright.
   Christmas eve went
to bed at about three o'clock
then slept in the after noon
and Xmas night went
to a party near by, but
the boys were all mostly
drunk so it spoiled the
whole thing- The crowd
left early that night.
My pen seems to
be so poor I wonder
why, maybe has the
"flu" like most of the

          2
people have around here.
Pa is quite sick his
face is all swelled for
some reason he seems
to think its from a root
of a tooth but I hope
he gets better soon-
Makes me feel kind of
worried.
My brother has to work
today, oh well- we
all do, don't we? He
isn't the only one.
But I'm through for
the after noon so I'm
supposed to visit a friend
while she is out here
for her vacation- Then
tomorrow I'm suppose
to visit school with

Gladys, don't you want
to come along with us (Ha Ha)
I guess you wouldn't
care for such company
would you Howard?
I sure went to plenty of
Xmas programs. To
some a bunch of us
walked about four,
five miles but good
thing it wasn't cold
as how, or I'd never go.
It has been fine
skating all this while
until now I know it
must be all covered
with snow unless the
river should be alright.
Wish you could have
seen the Xmas tree
we have, but tomorrow
I intend on throwing
it out because the
holidays are all gone by

           3.
now- Wonder what
we all will be doing
next year at this time,
don't you? It sure is
one grand thing none of
us know what the
New Year has in store
for each one of us. There
sure would be a lot of
suicides, wouldn't there?
It seems rather a
lonesome Day, today
hope I have some
company tonite other
wise it sure will be a
blue day-
Well Howard, I must be
going along if I want
to go anywhere or
else I'll never make it

by five o'clock there & back.
If it wasn't so far I'd
stop in to see you on
the way (Ha Ha) wouldn't
Howard be surprised
I bet he would alright?
Well, now I'm hoping
you have a very
Happy and prosperous
New Year.
Take good care of yourself
  and write again.
        Lovingly
            Helen

It was the end of the year or maybe the beginning of 1930. Maybe it was right on the boarder.
I wonder if someone forgot to change the post mark date and that is why it was wrong. So this could be the first of 1930. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
This is the end of 1929, I wonder if she knew of anyone who did commit suicide because of the stock market crash.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Another picture  and story about the Dionne Quintuplets.

Here are a few page from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Ah marriage, enjoy the lighter side of it.

And finally, a random picture:

Written on the back:
"Coupling up pulp loads"
No idea when this was taken or who could be driving.

Well, that's all I have for you today.
I hope you enjoyed this post.
Don't forget to come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Helen: Dec. 27, 1929 Evanston Ill.

Dear Friends,
The first full week in September is about done. How was you week? Mine, I was on vacation. I just wish it could have been warmer. I'm just glad that we are not having the weather they are having down south. Oh well, what you going to do.
Anyway, here is a letter from Helen who lives in Evanston  Ill.:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

          Evanston, Ill.
          Dec 26/29
Dear Howard:-
     Happy New Year
to you!
Was surprised to see
a note enclosed with
the nice card- surely
thank you- you know
I never do forget my
friends after I once
meet them so I send
everybody a greeting.
Hope you have had
a fine Xmas & all
the happiness in the
world.

I sure had a good time at
my married sister's place.
I went there Xmas eve
& came back last nite
almost mid night.
Xmas morning Anna &
Frank Novy came there
too so we all had a good
old fashioned chicken
dinner- and we listened
to the radio most of the
afternoon. Heard music
from Germany & even
England. It sure is great
isn't it- how music can
be heard such a distance.
No Howard, I never think
of that (bunk) what that
certain party told me about.
Don't ever think of it or
let it worry you for people
always like to talk it they
find something to talk about
especially such things.
This is my second job
since I came back this
if all I can't seem to find
anything suitable & jobs
are quite scarce. But I
think now after the holiday
it will change-

Anna N. & I room together &
if we don't have good times
together- I sure do enjoy her
company.
Well Howard- hope you
have success & happiness
throughout this coming
New Year. I do hate to part
from the old year, don't
you? We never know what
the New Year has in store
for each one of us.
      May God bless you
      always.
          Old friend
           as always
              Helen

There was actually only three pages but it was to big for the scanner so I did it in two.
I wonder what kind of scandal was going on the Grandpa was so concerned about it. Will anyone ever mention what it was?
I wonder what kind of music she was listening to that was from Germany and England?

Here is a page from the scrap book.:

This was one page but it was too big for the scanner.
Like I told you before, someone was very interested in these little girls. So there are a number of pictures of them yet to come.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Enjoy the signs and the start of "Just Married jokes".

And now a random picture:

This happened in 1958. Right now I don't know who was involved or why it happened. But I'm sure someone will tell me.

Well that's about all I have to say today.
I hope you all have a good weekend and people in Florida, stay safe.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy
