Gladys: Jul. 2, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Here it is way to cold. temp that are below zero most days. Plus the wind chill, which can be 30 below in some places. Hibernation time.
Well anyway, here is the next letter from Gladys:

For those that fine it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

(upside down)
399 Fullerstom Pky
                       Chicago Ill.
                       July 1-32
Dear Howard:-
well in a few hours it will
be 2 weeks already since we
went, rainy morning you meet Eddie
& I in Westboro. Time goes too
fast. We had a most tiresome
trip back on Monday. That day
trys is horrible and there we
were annoyed by a bold creature
who pushed herself on our tired nerves

she was frightful and
we were relived to get
rid of her I can tell you
I've got into the station
at 10:45 and there we
had over an hours
ride on the street car.
up to Eddie's apt. I
went right home
with her & slept that
night. We were too
tired to eat even we
went right to bed.
& I went to work
Tuesday night again
Things are pretty hot
here these days

during our convention I just
wonder who will get in, so
far we don't know. The session
laswted all night last night.
A lady who was there came
to have dinner with my pat-
ients sister & myself this eve
& she was so all in she had to
nap awhile there at the home
before dinner.
I started to go to the Dentist
yesterday. My purse will hurt
as much as the teeth. I think by
the sounds of this estimate, but it

has to be done. So I'll
have to make the
best of it.
I am so glad Dad
is getting better. It
was great to get home
if only for a few
hours. I think by
the looks of things
now, we will be
here at Passavant
Hospital most of the
summer. It is a
lovely Hosp. so I
don't mind you may
be sure.
We are having
delightful weather
here. Nice &

cool unusual for this time
of the year in Chicago. Today
it was too cold to go out
without a coat & Oh! so very
windy.
Well Howard thanks again
for being so nice to take us
around while we were there
and do excuse my letter
paper. I have no paper with
me down here at Hosp. & I
Just thought I'd better get
busy & write you a note.

My best wishes to
you & Tom.
Eddie tells me
Gladys Holm is going
home tonight.
Cousin Irene & another
girl are staying up
with Eddie for a
couple of days. For
company as Eddie's
room mate is still on
her vacation.
      So long
        Gladys

I hope I copied it right. With all those loop-to-loop kind of writing, it kind of hard to read.
It sounds like she had a good visit with Grandpa and was able to see her Dad.
It sounds like this Gladys worked in a hospital. I wonder what her job was?
I wonder how the girl they met on the trip back was annoying. Maybe she was looking for a friendship with them and just went about it the most annoying way. Or maybe she was just nervous and when she gets nervous, she gets a little to chatty. Just say'n.
I'm a little confused about the weather. It started out hot and then got cold.
I don't think I got the spelling of the hospital right.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

The quints can play hockey, too. In the large picture it appears that Annette (left) is going to get
the puck in the face-off with Yvonne and in the other picture we have a spill with Marie (right)
crying. Annette (left) hasn't quite regained her equilibrium but Yvonne is all set to start again.-

This is for all those that like to see picture of the Dionne quintuplets.

Here are few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

More funnies for all my show biz friends. Enjoy.

Finally here is a random picture:

This is Doris. Not sure who's classmate she was.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope everyone has a very happy New Years Weekend. I'll do what I do every year. Go out like a light.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Edna: April 22, 1932 Chicago, Ill. & A Birthday card

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. I know I did. It's always nice hanging out with family you don't get to see very often.
Anyway, I've got two things to share with you.
The first was postmarked April 8, 1932.

Grandpa's birthday was April 10th.he was 32 years old this year.

Here is a letter from Edna:

Since it is typed, I'm not retyping it.

It sounds like she has been a very busy girl.
Grandpa sounds like he was feeling ignored on purpose.
I hope he got the message back then. It wasn't him, it was her lack of free time and not wanting to write more after writing all day at work. I don't blame her.

Here is picture from the scrap book. 1936:

With the hockey matches for the Stanley cup approaching, we find the each Dionne quintuplet has adopted a team. They're apparently in the penalty box here for breaking some rule and are (left to right) Cecile (Detroit Red Wing), Marie (Buffalo Bison), Yvonne (Toronto Maple Leaf), Emilie (Chicago Black Hawk) and Annette of the Montreal Les Canadiens.-World Copyright, 1936 N.E.A. Service, Inc.

I know it's been awhile since I showed the girls. But here they are being little hockey players. I wonder who's idea it was to put them in these shirts?

Here are few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

To all my show biz friends, enjoy!

Finally a random picture:

Taken during someones class trip.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
Remember, stay warm. Below zero, not fun.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Well it's the beginning of a new year. So far so good.
I wonder what kind of party Grandpa had and how many people were there for it.
I wonder what kind of records she listened to.
What was playing on the radio at that time?
I wonder how long she suffered with a sore throat.
So much to wonder about and never get any real answers.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Another story about the Dionne Quintuplets. 1936

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Helen: Dec. 27, 1929 Evanston Ill.

Dear Friends,
The first full week in September is about done. How was you week? Mine, I was on vacation. I just wish it could have been warmer. I'm just glad that we are not having the weather they are having down south. Oh well, what you going to do.
Anyway, here is a letter from Helen who lives in Evanston  Ill.:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

          Evanston, Ill.
          Dec 26/29
Dear Howard:-
     Happy New Year
to you!
Was surprised to see
a note enclosed with
the nice card- surely
thank you- you know
I never do forget my
friends after I once
meet them so I send
everybody a greeting.
Hope you have had
a fine Xmas & all
the happiness in the
world.

I sure had a good time at
my married sister's place.
I went there Xmas eve
& came back last nite
almost mid night.
Xmas morning Anna &
Frank Novy came there
too so we all had a good
old fashioned chicken
dinner- and we listened
to the radio most of the
afternoon. Heard music
from Germany & even
England. It sure is great
isn't it- how music can
be heard such a distance.
No Howard, I never think
of that (bunk) what that
certain party told me about.
Don't ever think of it or
let it worry you for people
always like to talk it they
find something to talk about
especially such things.
This is my second job
since I came back this
if all I can't seem to find
anything suitable & jobs
are quite scarce. But I
think now after the holiday
it will change-

Anna N. & I room together &
if we don't have good times
together- I sure do enjoy her
company.
Well Howard- hope you
have success & happiness
throughout this coming
New Year. I do hate to part
from the old year, don't
you? We never know what
the New Year has in store
for each one of us.
      May God bless you
      always.
          Old friend
           as always
              Helen

There was actually only three pages but it was to big for the scanner so I did it in two.
I wonder what kind of scandal was going on the Grandpa was so concerned about it. Will anyone ever mention what it was?
I wonder what kind of music she was listening to that was from Germany and England?

Here is a page from the scrap book.:

This was one page but it was too big for the scanner.
Like I told you before, someone was very interested in these little girls. So there are a number of pictures of them yet to come.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Enjoy the signs and the start of "Just Married jokes".

And now a random picture:

This happened in 1958. Right now I don't know who was involved or why it happened. But I'm sure someone will tell me.

Well that's about all I have to say today.
I hope you all have a good weekend and people in Florida, stay safe.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Gladys: Dec. 23, 1929 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good holiday weekend.
The husband and I were able to finish hiking the Ice Age trail through Taylor County. I have to total the number of miles yet. But remember we did an out and back. This means we did it twice. Would you ever do something like that?
Anyway, here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

             Chicago Ill
              Dec 23.29
Dear Howard:-
Your letter reached me
yesterday and also the
picture of Lake Fraut, Waupaca
I think it very thoughtful
of you to send that to me.
Well are you going to
believe what I have been
trying to tell you about
destroying letters at once.
I should think your
latest experience which
you wrote me about
would have fully con-

vinced you that that is the
thing to do and I hope from
now on you will do it.-(burn
them)
I hope you will find cour-
age to write once in awhile anyway.
Every body is rushing like mad
here getting ready for Christmas. It
will not be a very joyous one
here after having had 2 deaths
in the house so very recent.
As I guess the folks at home
have told you about it.
It is a great blow to me in a
way because we were all going
to California for the winter &
this changed all plans of course.
And I should have loved it so.
Linnea is spending Xmas
at our aunts (Halts) Yesterday
she had dinner as Deckers
(Amanda Halt) Tomorrow evening.
I will go down there for awhile
How I should like to go to
church in the early Xmas

morning but I cannot get away
for that.
It sort of gave me a thrill
when you wrote about having
been to the Fin school. Gee those
were the days of fun dancing.
High-hoop-son-sa with the Fin
boys. To make the Swed boys
Jelley. Na.! Well Howard I
have to close these few lines
now as it is luncheon time
I shall give your message to
Edna & Linnea. I hope Tom & you
will have a joyful New year
As ever Gladys
For goodness sake burn
this now & avert a scandal
Ha Ha & write again.

The last bit was actually along the side of the first page.
I wonder what kind of scandal she is talking about.
I do wonder if Grandpa didn't save some letters for reasons like she mentioned or maybe he was not in the mood to save them all at that time.
I'll try to look up the lake she mentioned.
There are a lot of lake in Waupaca. But I could not find that name of a lake. That is if it was spelled right to begin with.
I wonder who died in her household and what they died of.
I do hope they all had a nice Xmas that year.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Fred Davis (left) made all the photographs of the Dionne Quintuplets you've seen (except, of course, this one). He's shown here with Dr. DaFoe during one of Davis' many visits to the nursery clad in the sterilized robe which is approved costume for calling on quintuplets. Davis has had a better opportunity than anyone except the doctor and nurses to observe the famous babies, shown in this picture, as they looked more than a year ago at their first Christmas celebration.    (Copyright, 1936 N.E.A., Inc)

If you don't know who these babies are, they were one of the first identical quintuplets to survive at that time. There are a number of pictures of them in the scrap book.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

 Enjoy reading all the signs.

Finally here is a random picture:

No idea who this is or when it was taken.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good week.
Don't forget to drop by for more Fading History.
Till then.

Sandy
