Luella: March 1, 1927 Marquette Mich

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was drama free. I am looking forward to the weekend. Nothing really planned, just two days off. It is slowing down at work. It always slow down this time of year for me.

This next letter I'll be showing you is a little different. I'm not sure who wrote it for sure and where is was suppose to go. I do wonder if there is a possibility that maybe Grandpa wrote it. If he did it gives a sample of how he wrote to the different girls.
So here it is, you decide:

As always here is what it says:

            Marquette Mich
             March 1st 1927
Dearest Luella:-
               Yours came
like like a spring breeze
on a morning when I
was in the "dumps" so
to speak. You know one
of those days when every-
thing goes wrong and you
feel there simply is
no use.
  And Ellie Low you
are a girl after me own
heart. Well do I remember
when I used to get the
"riot act" read to me

Drop in- I haven't
time to write Ha!
           L.A.

It's a short letter. But I think it might incomplete. I think there should have been more but that was all the was in the envelope. There was no stamp on the envelope. So I have no idea where this letter really came from. It would be great if it was a sample of Grandpa's writing. Then I could understand why a few of the girls said his letters were "mushy".
I guess it will just have to be one of those great mysteries that will never be solved.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

Not sure what is going on here but it looks like it could be from the 1920's.

This might be from May 1958. It's could be a family get together. It looks like some of the Johnson boys are on the left back side.

This is my uncle Leo.

I guess I can show you a picture from the scrap book.

The rugged country that surrounds the Camp Bird mine near Ouray, Col., is shown in this
picture. A snowslide Monday killed two men and a woman when the bunkhouse and mill
of the mine were demolished.
I just thought with the East Coast having a big snow storm I would share a snow issue from the past.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
Stay warm and safe. And if you get snowed in somewhere, just find a good book.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Lillian L. Jan. 15, 1926 Marquette Mich.

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Now hopefully the weekend will be be just as good.
There will be a get together this weekend for the Johnson clan. One of my aunts put together a book of genealogy of the Johnson's. i should hopefully be able to get some questions answered about some people I mention that are related. I'll keep you posted.
Here is the next letter which is from Lillian L. I've shown you one other letter form her awhile ago.

This is one of those extra challenging ones that I will say sorry if I get it wrong in typing it up.

Friend:---
Howard Johnson:---
   Recid yaun
so long time ago
so am taking time
to scribble a few
lines be/4 time goes
too scarce. It sure
takes me time to
write a few lines.
I've been out
of work for one day
on account of my illness
haven't been feeling
just O.K. But am
felling better now
at least I hope I do.
A person has to be
sick sometimes, they

can't be well always.
This is my first
day for a year and half
since I been real
sick. Glad thing
I had to be away only
one day.
    The weather
is cold at present.
I imagine the same
there. I'm glad
Spring will be soon
again. Then probably
next summer will
take the brother to
Wisconsin if ever-
thing goes well might
a long. My friend &
I are going home
for summer & stay
for a while.

I'm tires of this
restaurant already
It gets a person
nervous to work
on customers, es-
pecially some of them
when the're crabby
& smart. But we
have lots of fun tho.
You can see different
sort of people all
the time. Oh hay
at summer it keeps
a person busy all
day long. I guess
about 3 more months
is enough.
 Well I hope
you are having
a nice time for
the New Year.
We go home

mostly every nite
cause It's so cold
& the guys in Marq-
uette are mostly all
married men.& tuffs
My friend is outside
of town so I stay
home.
I bet you would-
nt know me if you
saw me, cause I weigh
141 pounds & I'm grown
till Mrs. Rasi that I
weigh 141 pounds &
am only 17 years old
Same weight hey! eh
 Well, I'll have to
close, wish you good
                 luck.
      Yours truly
           Lillian
            Launett

I did the best I could to copy it but it was a challenge.
What did I learn? She's 17 years old and weighs 141 pounds. I don't know to many women now a days that would write that about themselves. She works in a restaurant. I wonder who her "friend" outside of town was? I wonder if Grandpa contacted her very often. And how did he meet her.
History that has faded from all memory.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No idea who this is. It was taken in Providence R.I. at 2491/2 Westminster St.

Another person I have no idea who it is. It was taken at Gibson Art Galleries in Chicago.

No idea who they are. I thought since it was taken in the winter time it fit with the time the letter was written.

Well that's about all I have for you today.
Enjoy your weekend. Most people will have three whole day off. I just hope mother nature cooperates.
Your friend,
Sandy

Lillian L.: Dec. 5, 1925 Marquette, Mich.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Saturday was a nice warm day at first. Then it started to cool down. Sunday was cooler and rainy. But at least there was no drama, for me.
This next letter is from a new girl, Lillian L.. I'm not exactly sure about the last name so I'm just going to put a L, it's hard to make out, it's a challenging one to read as you will see.
Here it is:

Now bare with me. I'll write it out the best I can.

       Marquette, Mich
                  Dec 5 1925
Mr H. Johnson:__
  Received your letter
a time ago which
thanks very much
I couldn't imagine
from who that letter
was from I wasn't
going to remember
who it was, But then
as you said about
Mr. & Mrs. Rase that's
how I remembered
then. well, I still
remember the time
I was there I wander
when will it  he again
I spose for a good

many years after all.
Its over a year since
I was there the time
sure flies, can't
imagine where that
time has gone.
I figure on stay-
ing at Marquette
for few more
months or probly
till spring. I'm
tired of Marquette
already. I wonder
if Detroit will
be the next town
as all young go
there. But it
seems to me as

if I wouldn't enjoy
myself there I ima-
gine its too big
for me yet. I guess
I'll wait for spring.
  Oh the weather
here is cold now
at present only
a little of snow
tho' Just the
same. How is it
at Wisconsin
  Will you please
tell that Mrs
Rase to write to
me. I will not
write until she
writes first, tell

her I wish I was
there to haul her
out; she sure takes
time but she writes.
  Well, I wish
you all a merry
X-mas, hoping that
you'll excuse my
pencil writting as
my pen is broke
I'll remain this
scribbling.
      Yours truly
        Lillian

Like I said this was a very challenging one to copy. I did my best. Some words I know I got wrong. I'm not sure if I spelled  her last name right. That's why I put only a L for her last name. Maybe somewhere in the future there will be a clearer spelling of her last name. I'm not sure how many letters there will be from her. I wonder if they are all this challenging.

So here are a few random pictures for you to see:

This is another picture of a root cellar that was on the home place. Where uncle George's house now sits.

Three girls. No idea who they are.

This is half of a picture. This is aunt Jeanie. I wonder how old she was here.

Well that's all I have for you today. Come back Friday for another look at faded history.
Your friend,
Sandy
