Harriet: Feb. 12, 1929 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
How was your week? Mine was kind of uneventful except for the weather. It was so cold here on Thursday it snowed. We had about an inch on the ground. But the good thing is it is melting. I sure hope this the last time we see snow on the ground until sometime in November.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Harriet:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                    Chicago Ill
                   Sat. Afternoon
Dearest Sweetheart
Received your dear letter and
sure was glad to hear from
you again
Well hows the world treating
you now days. Hope fine
and dandy as it is treating
me.
Are you still having cold
weather as usual. It has
been real spring weather here
the last few days. But-
suppose it won't last long.
It is so lonesome this afternoon
as I am all alone home as
Margaret has to work until 4 o'
clock and the rest went out - so
thats that. I'm tired so decided
to stay home and rest.
Am going out to show to-
night with another couple. We
are going to see (The Terror)
Sounds spooky- ha! ha!

               =2=
To-morrow a few of us girls are
going to a dance at the Milford hall)
Margaret still goes to the Swedish dance
but I haven't been there for a while
as they sure are a rough bunch.
more like Renberg I guess. So
don't think I care to go any more
as there sure are better places then
that to go to.
It sure was to bad about
Clara R. wasn't it, poor kid. I
hope she will get well again
No I haven't seen or heard any
thing from Walter for the longest
time guess he has forgotten all
about me ha! ha!
Well honney there isn't any
thing to write about and have
about 6 more letters to answer but
haven't any patience writing
any more so think I will go
and take my (beauty nap) ha! ha!
Will close with heaps of (Love & Kisses)
                           Your Sweetie

                               SWAK

I wonder what happened to Clara R. Will I ever find out?
I think Walter has finally stop contacting her for good.
Just a nice simple letter.
I looked up the movie she mentioned. It was made in 1928.
"The Terror" (1928).jpg
This was the second all talking film released by Warner Bro.
As you can tell it was a horror show.
This is the description from Wikipedia
I think I would watch it, how about you?

Plot[edit]

"The Terror", a killer whose identity is unknown, occupies an English country house that has been converted into aninn. Guests, including the spiritualist Mrs. Elvery and detective Ferdinand Fane, are frightened by strange noises and mysterious organ music. Connors and Marks, two men just released from jail, have sworn revenge upon "The Terror". Following a night of mayhem that includes murder, the identity of "The Terror" is revealed.[1]

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Locked in tight- these boats from the Two Rivers fishing fleet are shown before the United States coast guard patrol boat Perry was able to break a narrow channel for them. Ice conditions in the Two Rivers harbor are the worst since 1904 according to veteran fishermen, and the ice at the harbor mouth was so thick that the fishermen were able to get off the boats and walk around while the channel was being broken. The Perry is in the background.- Paul J. Brawn Photo.

This was almost to big for the scanner but I got it to work.

Here is a page from the Joke Book:

Enjoy. I like the cartoon. How about you?

Finally a random picture:

A classmate named Jim. Class of 1960. No idea what his last name is. Don't you just love his hair?

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
Enjoy your weekend and don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading HIstory.
Till then.

Sandy

Helen Balusik: Feb. 7, 1929 Phillips, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. We hiked 11.62 miles on Sunday. It took us about 5 hours. It was a little longer then we thought it would be, but we survived. It was on the cool side at first but half way through the sun came out and warmed up a bit.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Helen:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

               Phillips, Wis.
                 Feb. 6-29
Dear Howard:-
   Surely enjoyed your
letter so will take the
pleasure of answering
it this afternoon.
  it's only two o'clock
I did all My work this
morning even cooked
supper so I could have
time to write letters in
the afternoon.
  Tonite some of us kids
want to go practicing
singing so that we
will be able to chirp

like birds, someday-Ha Ha.
Today is a grand day
snowing a little but the snow
is also melting fast. How I
wish next week was spring
already. The winter has
certainly seemed long-
Monday I was to a funeral
one of neighbors died just
suddenly- sure was a shock
to me. That's how death
comes so unexpectedly, some
times.
So that day I left pa to
make dinner. He only made
enough meat and potatoes
for himself and when I
came home I had to make
my own- That's the way
the men are- Ha Ha. I
really shouldn't say this
because they aren't all like
that- are they?
Did you ask me whether
my brothers car was running
when it burned? Yes he

was coming from Prentice
with his boss and it caught
somehow at the bottom &
they were luck enough to get
out of it in time. What
kind have you a Ford Coupe
isn't that what you use to
have, at least I think you
wrote about it one time.
I often wish I had a
little car of my own. I
sure would make a good
time of it.

             2
One thing I'd surely do
go out to some lake
and go fishing- Maybe
I'd hit for Stone Lake
that's near Ogema
isn't it-
In the Spring some
time I'm coming up to
Gladys Martins school
then maybe I'll get to
see you walking around
some where in Ogema
would be a joke on you
alright if I'd start
talking to you and
you wouldn't know
who I was- Ha Ha.

Well anyway i don't think
I could fool you so easily
Maybe I would resemble
my picture a little- I hope
you have it burned up by
this time, at least I hope
so.
Some one was telling me
about you recently- We started
talking of you somehow and
this fellow told me he knew
you and said it wasn't true
that you didn't smoke &
drink- and that you
go to all those dances
around there. I don't know
whether he was against you
but I won't believe it until
I really know it. He also said
that you chewed snoose to bit
the band, besides smoking.
So Howard, who shall I
believe you of him. I hate to
mention his name because
that's how trouble begins,
but he told me not to
believe all that you tell

me.
I hope you do not get offended
at this but even tho I hear
things I don't believe them
especially not knowing you
very well.
  Well Howard, hope you
are fine and lets hear from
you again.
     Your friend
       Helen

Well that was a nice letter. I wonder if she ever tells him who she was talking to about him.
As for the things she was told, he did drink. I don't know how much, but he did drink a little that I know of. As for the chew, not sure but it was a good possibility.
I wonder if they ever met up.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

The original Shrine of the Little Flower, the Rev. Charles E. Coughlin's church at Royal Oak, Mich., burned Tuesday morning with an estimated loss of $30,000. The dome of the new shrine, not yet completed can be seen in the background through the ruins. Faulty wiring was blamed for the fire.

I wonder what kind of religion it was. I do think the name sounds very unique.
Did they rebuild?

Here is a page from the joke book:

Enjoy.

And here is a random picture:

No idea who this is or what she is doing or when it was taken.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Harriet: Jan. 30, 1929 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Around here we had a very wet one.I wish I could tell Mother nature to ease up a bit on the rain thing. But something tells me she has other ideas.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Harriet:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                    Chicago, Ill
                  Tuesday Eve
Dearest Sweetheart
Suppose you think I am
dead by this time for not
answering your letter sooner.
But I am still all here
well how is everything with
you honney fine as myself
I hope.
I heard that there is plenty
of snow up there. There isn't
so much snow here but it
is rather cold etc-
What are you doing for
excitement around there.
Last (Sunday) I went to
my girl friends for dinner and
played bunco in the afternoon.
In the evening four of
us girls went to a dance.
Had a wonderful time
you should of been along honney

              -2-
Have you seen Freda lately.
She sure must of had quite a
time after the operation.
Well darling when are you
coming to Chicago. If not before
why not come next summer.
How about it hon
Sure would love to have you
come.
Have you seen Clarence lately.
and what is he doing. Has
he any sweetheart yet. Tell
him to step on the gas ha! ha!
Well honney there isn't any
news and is getting time for
little girls like me to be in bed.
So will close with
Heaps of love & kisses from
                         Sweetheart
                   Hattie
Answer
at once       (SWMK)

I see she signed it Hattie. I wonder if she was more known by that or if she was just trying to sound cuter.
The weather around here must have been kind of snowy and just cold down there.
Not a whole lot here. Just a nice letter that does not really say much of anything important.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Spring must be here- the geese are flying north. This remarkable aerial photograph shows a flock near Onawa, Iowa. The wild geese fly high but the plan flies higher.- A.P. Wirephoto.

I would love to have seen this picture in color. It always makes me smile when I see a flock of birds like this.

Here is a page from the joke book:

Jokes for the cold kind of people. Enjoy.

Here is a random picture:

It's not a good picture. I tweaked it the best I could but it's still hard to make their faces out. It could be one of Grandpa's attempt at getting a good picture developed.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have  a really good weekend.
Don't forget to drop by again for more Fading History.
Till then.

Anna: Majorville, Jan. 25, 1929 Majorville, Alberta, Canada

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good Easter weekend. Mine was good. Went to my parents house on Saturday to have dinner with the family. Sunday the husband and I went for a hike. 9.62 miles in about 4 hour and 10 minutes. we went longer then I thought we would but it really was not a bad hike. looking forward to the next one.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Anna:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

           Majorville, Alberta
             Jan 25, 1929
Dear Howard:- I was so glad
to receive your letter Howard and
it was such a nice one. What you
said I think is so true. i think when
we get older we see life in a different
way and learn more by experience. I
am so glad you feel satisfied with
life like that Howard it is so much
better than chaffing in the boonies
like I am always doing. Keep well
if you possible can Howard because
health is such a blessing. All I have to
look back on his my layed up years
but I guess I had to high ambitions.
Now i don't dare to look forward
I lost my nerve two and a half years
ago and care for life. It seemes like
just when I had it nice and was satisfied
something would come and upset
well it would always be sickness. You
can't imagine how lonesome I've been
ever since last fall. I could have a
good time one evening or day what ever
it happened to be and then everything
would go flat again.

It's only nine o'clock and everyone
else is in bed and I guess I've got the
blues but I've seen a might of trouble
since I came away from home and I
guess it will take a long long time
to get over it.
I like the way you spoke of Mary
and Anna-also that you one nahbout
because I think things things are suppose
to be a certain way and we can't
change them. I am sure Howard the
right one will come along someday
and then you can be glad that you waited.
I think we are attracted to some folks
and if it should be if we only trust
in God it will come out alright if
he sees best it should be one way and
is another thing we only trust in him and
his way it is bound to come out all
right. I know from experience Howard
and maybe some hard experience also
but I have seen his way was right thing
yes I am sure God wants us to have
a good time and I know when unhappy
when we are. Lot of unhappiness we bring
unto ourselves and some other bring on
us, could you tell by this letter that
I haven't been to church since Oct. No that's
another thing I don't always think going

to church gives you a lot of nilygroans ideas
thought it helps wonderfully well.
Howard you have been a pal to me
for years and to think I had to get mad
at you and say those mean things. I
have kept my temper to myself for such
a long time now I am afraid it will
fly forth with a bang some day-Ha!
We went to a house party Friday
night and they wouldn't leave me
alone till they got me on the floor. I
claimed I couldn't & I didn't think
I could. One of the boys said I dances
a lot better than a lot that have
dances for ten years.Others said- and
you try to tell me you never danced
before? See told of Ned a- Ge! I thought
we was going to teach slim to dance
but there was nothing to it. That was
more fun than the dancing-Ha!
Won't dare to try it again afraid
It'l spoil my nap. Ha! I stayed with
a girl friend of mine till Sun. and
we certainly had a whale of a good
time. I laughed till I was sick & they
wanted me to stay the whole week
but felt I couldn't. Lilly Godken
wants me to visit her when her sister
comes and that is soon. So I can't
be gone all the time. I've intended

to meet Pearson & Bentsachy ever
since new years and haven't gotten
together yet. I was almost layeranced
on account of boil under my right
arm for about three weeks as I'd
have to work like the dickens to catch
up for lost time. I want to go home
before harvest this year but I'm not
sure. I hardly think it will be before
I'm not saying what I'll do Howard
but you can expect most anything
from me. Do you remember what you
advised me to do? Maybe I've done it
already. I usually dive into some-
thing or other don't I. Sanapre is my
second name. So had Nel or Han wasn't
there Friday night so they could have
woke up mother & Dad when they got
home what I'd committed an unpardoned
now I'm getting sarcastic aren't I.
Your lucky to have a good home &
you don't have to tie your wings any
other place and Tom won't tell you to get out
if you disagree with some little things
It's nice to be wanted. I could stay
here or to Freda because they want me but
it isn't the same as a home of your own
and as long as mother & dad live I'll be
provided for also but- I've got to quit before
I say to much.  to you & Tom
Heaps of love as ever your
                 Cousin Ann-

(written along the side of the first page)
Let Tom or Helen read this but please no one else will you?

I'm sorry for the words I got wrong. Not sure if they were misspelled to begin with or if they were Swedish words.
It sounds like she was a kind of sounding board for Grandpa when it came to looking for love.
It does kind of sound like he was still caring a torch for Mary and or another one.
I wonder how often she went dancing?
I also wonder how long she stayed in Canada?
Oh well.

Here is a scrap book picture:

Seven hours late but they made it- Engineer Bert McCormick
(front) and Fireman Bill Hayes inspect the snow covered
engine of the Southwest Limited after their arrival at the Milwau-
kee road depot here late Tuesday.- Journal Staff Photo.

I wonder how many drifts they had to fight their way through that day?

Here is a page from the joke book:

Enjoy.

And here is a random picture:

No idea who they are or when it was taken.

Well, that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back again real soon for more Fading History.

Anna: Jan. 21, 1929 Majorville, Alberta, Canada

Dear Friends,
I was so glad for me this was a short week for work. I am so needing a three day weekend, again. With Easter this weekend it will once again be kind of a busy one. At least it's not work.
Anyway, here is a letter from Anna. I'm not sure if it's an Anna I've already shown you or if it is a different one.

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says (in some places I might get it wrong):

               Majorville, Alberta
                  Jan 21, 1929
Dear Howard: Kid you have
been on my mind ever since
I read your letter. What is the
matter Howard- discourage
with life? I know you are but
Howard don't let one or two
women spoil your life. I guess
I haven't been the pal I use to be
a nesther have I Howard? I
am sorry if I hadn't. There
is all kinds of stories isn't
there and there always is two
sides to them. Every time we
get a song about Mary on the
radio and there are several of
them I think of you two. You
can't imagine how sorry I am

over it. I have some experience
in life my self in that way so
even if you don't think I can't
understand I do and I think I
can see both side of it. I
have had several problems and
some since I landed up here.
There is a especially two that
has bothered me and I am afraid
I will have to worry about a
third problem. This might sound
funny to you Howard but
I'm just writing this to show you
I understand and as Hilda K.
said- please show this to nobody
Find something interesting
to do and things will come out
right- it's bound to one way
or the other. I know it's hard
for you and Tom there alone.
Just think Howard if many
had gone through with it and

then changed her mind wouldn't
it been a lot harder. I know my
self that I wouldn't & couldn't
let a man change for me if he
didn't do it for his God & my God.
Don't you think she has had a
heartache also- I can bet she has
Enough said. I'm always
giving you a sermon but oh
Howard I don't mean it that
way at all so don't misunderstand.
I'm having such a good time
up here. If one don't come along
some one else does and so so
no wonder I have a hipa now
of a time. The kids are bound
I'm going to learn to dance and
I don't want to. Freda & Lois went
to a big one in Queenstown  Fri.

I had three chances to go but
wouldn't when I couldn't dance.
One party ( I was dumbfounded) stayed
home when I woulldn't go. We went
out Thur night & sat instead Tues.
night is another one. Freda wants
me to go but I don't want to a
bunch from this neighborhood
is going and I know I'd have a
good time. I have been trained to good.
it was more fun when I knew I'd
get a lecture afterwards eh what!
The kids around here claim they
are going to teach me.
There is a young couple that
are staying at one of our neighbors
here this winter. The old folks are
gone and say if we don't have
a great old time. We go so
much and have so much company
that time flies by so fast.
The teacher is planning on having
some thing in the school house

soon. He wants me to help him
with it. Talk about cut up.
One of the neighbor boys& his sister
and the teacher & I went to Queenstown
one night last week. Us
four some can have a cincus
also. there is such a lively bunch.
I want to go in to Lids soon
I know I'll have a good time there
also because there is a lively bunch
there also and in the winter
time everybody takes it easy and
just enjoy them selfs.
Lid and Jennie & family went
north for Xmas. Lid and three
men neladrin of Jennies went
moose hunting and got lost.
They had to stay out in the
woods all night and they

claim it was real exciting.
it's a bush country up there.
it's about three hundred miles
from here.
Gro promised Freda & I a
triped to Calgary soon. Hope we
can go. I have an invitation
tonight a girl freind of ours who
was married just before Xmas
is married and lives near Calgary.
and I want to go so bad.
if I stay over next summer I
want to take in the Calgary Stampede
you should see some of the stunt
riders etc. I have seen them
at the smaller affairs and it's
so good. The Stampede is a lot
like the fairs back home only
they do so much riding here.
I have seen so many new
things since I came up here
but that's natural because you
can say it's a new country
but oh how I wished I could
have just a good old time

like we use to have. I know
I have had more chances to
get out here etc. I was telling
Freda about the dance at Winells
barn- the other day- She is
such a good scout. It is so
funny but I miss her just
terribly when she's gone and she
claims she does when I'm gone.
She says I can go home for
next Xmas- but I claim we
are both going home this summer.
but I never plan on anything
anymore because if I do I always
have got a sick stomach which up
set my plans& spoil them.
It doesn't seem long since
we went to Copper Falls that
Sun. We never knew then

what was in stone for all
of us in the future did we.
This is a funny world isn't
Howard and we each and
every one of us have to play our
own game not for losing or
gaining it seems but fave & square
I don't want you to think women
are4 so terrible they have their
side of the story also.
Write to me soon won't
you- I have written so fast
that I'm afraid you can't read
this.
Helsa I am so micki forthom
me.          As ever the same
                  old-    Anna

I know there are a number of words I was not sure of. They might be Swedish words or just very bad spelling not sure.
Anna, I think, might have been his cousin. I think I might have shown you one before but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I think he was writing to her about losing Mary and maybe another one that I don't know about. She was doing her best to make him feel better and to encourage him not to give up looking for the right one.
It sounds like she was enjoying Canada. I wonder if she stayed there and if I have relatives up there some where. I guess I'll have to ask questions to my Dad about that or maybe my aunt.
It sounds like she was not much of a planner but like to do thing spur of the moment.
I wonder if she ever learned to dance.
I wonder if she knew the other side of the story with Mary.
Anyway, long letter and your tired of reading about it.
Here is a picture from the scrap book:

 (Thursday, March 26, 1929)
Cameron, in Barron county,
was under several feet of
water when this picture was
taken. A creek tributary to the
Red Cedar river, overflowed
when a heavy rain melted snow
in the hills northeast of town.
The efforts of 50 men, who piled
sandbags, and freezing weather
Tuesday night allayed the dan-
ger.- W.F. Erickson Photo.

I wonder how long it took them to dry out after that.

Here is a page from the joke book:

Enjoy the jokes.

And here is a random picture:

I thought since she mentioned Copper Falls I'd show another picture of it.

This has been a very long post. I know you are tired of reading it. So I will just wish you all A Happy Easter.
I hope you will come back again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Helen Balusik: Jan 22, 1929 Phillips, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was great. We had a baby shower for my youngest daughter on Saturday. it went very well. On Sunday morning, my husband and I went for our second hike on the Ice Age Trail. It took us about 3 hours and ten minutes to hike 6.8 miles. We are doing on out and back which it means we are going to be hiking it twice in a way. The more I do it the better the hikes will get, I hope.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Helen:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                 Phillips, Wis.
                       Jan. 21-29
Dear Howard:-
Sorry I am so late in
answering your letter but
I really didn't feel much like
writing the past week or so.
I sure felt sick I guess I had
the touch of flu- would have
liked to be in bed but there
was no one else to help pa
so I had to stick it out some
how. Now I'm almost feeling
myself. It sure is a grand
and glorious feeling too.
My, but isn't it a grand
night out? Moonlight
too at that-Ha Ha.
Sometimes I can't wait

till winter is over again. always
lasts so long, don't it?
I suppose you heard Petes car
burned or did I tell you? He
had it insured but the insurance
company only wanted to pay him
a small amount, so he isn't
settled with it yet. Aren't you glad
that wasn't your luck?
The young folks sure have
plenty of parties around here-
Was to one Saturday and tomorrow
night there giving a surprise
party on one of the girls that
came from the city. So at least
a person doesn't get lonesome
other wise would be like

out in the praries here.
I sure had a snap today
sometimes I only pick up the
guitar and practice a little on
it or else fool around some
how. When summer comes
it will be a different story there
won't be time for fooling around.
Yesterday I was to church the
Minister gave us a fine sermon
Wished you could have heard it.
I heard from Anna Novy today
she says Frank is in Michigan
I suppose traveling around
looking for work.
Yes that is Anna's oldest

brother that bought that car
with false checks. He is in jail
now till March. Anna feels
so bad about it. Poor kid, she
has her share of troubles.
Well Howard, I suppose you are
busy listening to the radio by
now for it's almost eight o'clock.
Be good to yourself and
write again.
      I remain
        Your Friend
           As always
               Helen.

Well between not feeling well and going to parties, she was a busy girl.
I wonder how many bad checks Anna's brother wrote to get a car and how long he ended up sitting in jail?
I guess I'll never know.
I wonder what kind of things Grandpa listened to on the radio?

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Drifted roads and sever cold meant nothing to Monroe county residents last week-end and
hundreds went to Tomah for a chopping contest put on by the Tomah Advancement asso-
ciation. Twelve choppers, representing as many different communities, participated and some
pf them are shown above at work. Fred Arndt, Sparta won; Joe Honish, Clifton was second
and Jesse Schultz, Tomah, was third.

I wonder how long the competition lasted?

Here is a page from the joke book:

"Who takes him out?"

Not sure who is asking this question.

Here is a random picture:

No idea when this one was taken.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.

Harriet: Jan. 18, 1929 Chicago, Ill.

Dearest Friends,
Well it's the end of yet another week. Now my weekend is going to be busy. Tomorrow we will be putting on a baby shower for my youngest daughter. Her baby is due about June 6th. My first grand baby. It's going to be the beginning of a very exciting time for all. The weather on Saturday is suppose to be very nice. Almost 70, Yeah!
Anyway, here is the next letter from Harriet:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                 Chicago, Ill
              Thursday Eve
Dearest Sweetheart,
Hope you will excuse
me for not answering
you letter sooner honney
but it just seemed like
I couldn't get any of
my letters answered.
Well I have been going
to bed at 8:30 almost
every night. So guess
thats why ha! ha!
Ain't I getting to be good tho.
Bet I beat you on that
eh! Or how about it.

            =2=
What I heard it is cold enough
up there isn't it.
Well really think it is down here
to. It was so below day before
yesterday. And (oh! was it cold
going to work that morning I wish I
was married so I could sit by
the fire place all day. I don't
want much do I (ha! ha!)
So Freda is back home
Have you seen her lately.
Do you see Lila or has
she gone back to Chicago. She is
still single real it-
Well whats new up around
there anyway. Lot of snow for
one thing I suppose.
Are the cars a going or is
it to much snow.
Got a picture of Clarence & Isabel
from home. They sure do look
comical on it.
I also had a letter from her

her yesterday.
Well dear I am going to make
this letter short this time as there
isn't any news and besides have
to write some more letters yet.
So will close with (heaps of love & Kisses)
                          Your Sweetie

Not a whole lot here, just a lot of mention of the weather.
I wonder how many people she was writing to at that time.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

I suppose with all the snow they had back then that it was a big job getting the train to run.

Here is the next page from the joke book:

For anyone who was working on the puzzle, here is the page with the answers.

And here is a random picture:

I don't know if I ever met either one of these women.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you all have a good week.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History. You never know what you will see.
Till then.
