Little Red-Riding -Hood: Riverside Literature Series

Dear Friends,
I hope this finds you all well. Me? Well I know have two little dogs at my house.
This is Little Foot. (Sometimes called Little Man)
This is Lucky.

They belong to my mother in law. Last weekend she had a stroke. It is going to be a while for her to get better. So in the mean time her dogs are living with me.

Anyway here is the next story from the book.

LITTLE RED-RIDING-HOOD

Once upon a time there lived in a certain
village a little girl. Her mother was very fond of
her, and her grandmother doted on her even
more. This good old woman made for her a
red cloak, which suited the child so well that ever
after she was called Little Red-Riding-Hood.
One day her mother made some cakes, and
said to Little Red-Riding-Hood:--
"Go, my dear, and see how grandmother
does, for I hear that she has been very ill.
Carry her a cake and a little pot of butter."
Little Red-Riding-Hood set out at once to go
to her grandmother, who lived in another village.
As she was going through the wood she met a
large
wolf. He had a very great mind to eat
her up; but he dared not, for there were some
wood-choppers near by. So he asked her:--
"Where are you going, little girl?" The
poor child did not know that it was dangerous
to stop and talk with the Wolf, she said:--

"I am going to see my grandmother, and
carry a cake and a little pot of butter from
my mother."
"Does she live far off?" asked the Wolf.
"Oh, yes. It is beyond that mill you see
there, at the first house in the village."
"Well" said the Wolf, "I will go and see
her too. I will go this way; do you go that,
and we will see who will be there soonest."
At this the Wolf began to run fast as he
could, taking the nearest way, and Little Red-
Riding-Hood went by the farthest. She stopped
often to chase a butterfly, or pluck a flower, and
so she was a good while on the way. The Wolf
was soon at the old woman's house, and knocked
at the door-- tap,, tap!
"Who is there?"
"Your grandchild, Little Red-Riding-Hood,"
replied the Wolf, changing his voice. "I have
brought you a cake and a pot of butter from
mother." The good grandmother, who was ill
in bed, called out:--
"Pull the string, and the latch will go up."
The Wolf pulled the string, and the latch went
up. The door opened, and he jumped in, and
fell upon the old woman, and ate her up in less
than no time, for he had not tasted food for
three days. He then shut the door, and got into
the grandmother's bed. By and by, Little Red-

Riding-Hood came and knocked at the door--
tap, tap!
"Who is there?"
Little Red-Riding-Hood heard the big voice
of the Wolf, and at first she was afraid. Then
she thought her grandmother must have a bad
cold, and be very hoarse, so she answered:--
"Little Red-Riding-Hood. I have brought
you a cake and a pot of butter from mother."
The Wolf softened his voice as much as he could,
and called out:--
"Pull the string, and the latch will go up."
Little Red-Riding-Hood pulled the string, and
the latch went up, and the door opened. The
Wolf was hiding under the bed clothe and called
out in a muffled voice:--
"Put the cake and the pot of butter on the
shelf, and come to bed."
Little Red-Riding-Hood made ready for bed.
Then she looked with wonder at her grand-
mother, who had changed so much, and she
said:--
"Grandmother, what great arms you have!"
"The better to hug you, my dear."
"Grandmother, what great ears you have!"
"The better to hear you, my dear."
"Grandmother, what great eyes you have!"
"The better to see, my dear."
"Grandmother, what great teeth you have!"

"The better to eat you." And at this the
wicked Wolf sprang up and fell upon poor Little
Red-Riding-Hood and ate her all up.

I know we all know this story has many different versions. But I think this is the original one of it. What is your favorite version?

Here are couple of little articles I found:

Lawrence J. Ecker is a relation to my Grandma Johnson.
I wonder how this one turned out for John Jewel Sr. I wonder what motivated him to do this and if he had ever done anything like that before of after.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you come back soon for more blasts from the past.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Genevieve R. Smith: Aug. 1, 1929 Westboro, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. As for my work week, it was short. The weather is starting to change around here. It's getting hotter. It's July, it's to be expected.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Genevieve:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says. There is a different language at the beginning:

I tried to figure out if the beginning was Dutch but I could not find the right way to translate the words. Maybe you will have better luck.
I like the way she dated it. I wonder why she used it the way she did. I think she was a very interesting person to know.
I wonder who this Mrs. B. is. She sounds like a real busybody.
I wonder why she wanted to write to Walter. I guess when you write to so many people one more will not matter. I think I would get writers cramp if I wrote to that many people all the time.
I decided to include the misspelled words. More real, not fake.

Here is a picture form the scrap book:

Mist, on the early part of the trip and before the great ice fields were
reached, combined with snow, covered the upper deck of the City of Saginaw
with ice, as shown above. Patches of ice covered the ship.

It must have been a very fascinating story to follow.

Here is a page from the joke book:

 Enjoy.

Here is a random picture:

No idea when or where this was taken. Grandma is the one on the right and I think Grandpa is in the back No idea who the other people are.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

You can in this

       Can you find it!

I like the little artwork she did on the first page.  She sounds like she was a character.
I also like the poem at the end. I wonder if she wrote it or just repeated one she liked.
I do wonder how often they did get together and hang out.
I could not make out Mildred's last name. Maybe you can.
I did leave some of the misspelled words alone, i hope you don't mind.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Praise for the seemingly tireless crew came from the five passengers, including M.I. Mc-
Carty, Ludington, Mich., left, and Ted Beranek, La Crosse, Wis. officers remained on duty
without sleep through watch after watch, true to the traditions of the sea to stand by their vessel
while danger prevailed. And the radio operator was always at his key.

This ship and the issue must have been a real interesting thing to who ever was collecting all these stories.

Here is a page from the joke book:

I wonder if this where fake news started? Enjoy.

I decided to share a picture I've shown you before because it is the 4th of July and it is a patriotic kind of picture:

Happy 4th Of July to all!

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
Enjoy the holiday and don't forget to come back real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Genevieve: July 16, 1929 Westboro, Wis.

Dear Friends,
Well it's the end of another week. Another wet one. All this rain is making it so hard for farmers to get their crops in. I just hope that soon it will ease up. Besides I'm on vacation this next week. Not sure what we will be during the week but at least I will not have to work. Yeah!
Anyway, here is a letter from Genevieve. This is the first one from her. But reading it, it sounds like she has written others. For some reason Grandpa did not save them or they got lost.

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what is says:

                Ge Whiz
               Jew-lie's 61st
Dearest Howard----
At'a boy just send
a litter more news. I'm
ever so sorry if all of
it was not in last
week, but the night I
wrote it Ray came and
we went up to Bert's so I
was in an awfull hurry.
Listen kid, can you
be up to Bert's Tu Wednesday
evening at about 7 or 7:30
because I have to go to
Rib Lake and I may come
up there alone if I'm
not there at 7:30 then
You'll know I went to
Rib Lake first, and
then I'll be up at about
9: or 9:30 P.M. but be

sure to be there from
7- 9:30 came out as soon
as a car stops cause
I want come in there
Did you have a lot
of fun entertaining my
brother Sunday! Guess
I'll come along next.
  But am I Welcome!
ha! ha!
What makes you
think Ray is mad
I'll tell you the truth
he said be dose not
like Walter and of course
as long as Walt was
with you he would
not stop. I don't know
why  but he just says
he don't care for him
Yesterday a guy came

         2
from Prentice his name
was Balng and he
wanted me to clerk
in the restaurant and
Hotel for him, you
should see the offer
he made me, I felt
like hitting him, will
tell you the rest when
I see you. haven't any
more time so must
saw Bert yesterday ha ha
Gee but its tough
to be lonesome and
blue miles and miles
away from you.
Please write a long
letter soon.
          Love & kisses
            Genevieve

She sounds like a kind an interesting person. Like for the date. She had a very interesting way of writing it.
I do wonder how often they got together.
There is a possibility that her letters might be mixed up in a wrong order. Just to warn you.
I wonder what Walter had done to make her brother not want to be around him?
I wonder how long he hung out with Grandpa?
I also wonder what the guy offered to her that she felt so insulted.
I think they hung out at Bert's a lot.
I'm looking forward to to see what else she will write in the future.

Here are a coupleof scrap book picture:

The city of Saginaw comes through! Crashing some of the worst ice packs in the history of lake navigation, the Pere Marquette line car ferry No. 31, shown at the upper left as it arrived back in Milwaukee, had to break its way through ice fields 24 feet high, some 20 miles off Ludington, Mich., as shown in the photo at the upper right. On the return trip the passengers witnessed, for the first time in history, solid ice from the Michigan to the Wisconsin shore.

I think these two picture belong together.
Now that is one icy looking ship.
I wonder if that kind of ice has happened since then.

Here is the next page from the joke book:

Enjoy. Some  are kind of corny, others kind of make you want to scratch your head or make you roll your eyes.

And here is a random picture:

Not sure who these guys are but I think they were up to no good. Notice the bottles and jug they are holding.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope everyone has a very good and safe weekend.
Don't forget to drop by real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Sandy

Anna Reicheul: Nov. 7, 1927 Westboro, Wis.

Dear Friends,
Well another week has gone by. My work week is a little shorter. I didn't have to work today, so I get a three day weekend.I just hope I'll be able to do a few things outside, we'll see.
Anyway here is the next letter from Anna Reicheul. I'm not a hundred percent sure I spelled her last name right, This is her first letter:

This one was a little harder to to make out in places, so I did the best I could for those that have a hard time reading it:

                      Westboro Wis.
                       Nov. 7, 1927
Dear Friend:
                 I suppose that
you think I'm a dandy for
not answering your letter
sooner, but you know I did
not promise to answer at all.
I received a letter from Helmen
a few days ago and I was
so surprised that my shoes
flew off and landed in my
pockets, and you can bet
that I had a pocket full
as I wear on less than num-
ber elevens.
Isn't it awful it had to go
and snow to-day as I don't
game to have it snow till

I pull out of this neck of the
woods, which will be some
time after Thanksgiving.
I believe that I saw you in
Westboro the night of the
community get-to-gather. You
was sitting way back wasn't
you? I don't know where you
disappeared after that. Though
of course I din't stay at all
after the program and you
can bet that I was terribly
peeved because I couldn't stay
for the dance, because dance
is my second name, well it
was time for little kids like
me to be sleeping anyway.
I don't think you saw me.
Say kid you're some sheik

you are, you said that you
was coming over to see me
some Sunday, but did not
happen see you whats
the matter are you scared
to come out here in the
sticks. Probably you were
out for all I know as I
haven't been home Sunday
for a dooms age. But last
Sunday I was home alone
all day but of course I had
plenty company some thing
like my self. You don't
happen to know Ester Okon
do you? Say kid she sure
is a scream she is coming
over to see me Sunday
so if you want to make a

hit with her you might
hop over, you certainly would
not regret meeting her like
you did me as she is ever
so much nicer. A good looking
blond with big dimples in her
cheeks.
Well I suppose I ought to
choke of on this bunk.
            Your friend,
            Anna Reicheul

Once again sorry if I spelled her last name wrong along with a couple of the other names.
For those of you who don't know where Westboro is, it's on the edge of Taylor county close to Price county. Where grandpa lived was just in Price county not to far from Westboro. I wonder how far out from Westboro she lived if she said she lived in the sticks. Westboro is not a very big place itself.
Right now I'm not sure how many more letters from her there will be.
Her humor is a little different. Talking about her size eleven shoes. Now those are big feet. Me I have tiny feet compared to most other people in my family. I wear a size 6.
It sounds like she liked to dance. Grandpa was not a dancer.
I wonder what the community get-to-gather was for.
I wonder if he ever met Ester and if he did what he thought of her.

Here are two more viewer cards from the earthquake of 1906.

 14. Looking northwest from corner Ellis and Powell Sts.

   15. Looking up Grant Ave. from Market St.

I've never been to San Francisco so I can't really compare what it looks like now but I'm sure you would not be able to tell that something like this ever happened there. it must have been a site to see while they were rebuilding the whole place. Maybe someday I will be able to see some of these places myself.

Here is a random picture for you to look at:

This is Joe Tozenshi. Someones classmate.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a great weekend and will come back again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Helen: Feb. 16, 1926 Westboro, Wis.

Dear Friends,
It has been a very wet week. To wet for my taste. I just hope the weekend is more on the dry side. Well as dry as it can be even though the ground sounds like you are walking on a sponge.
Anyway here is the next letter. It from Helen. No idea right now what her last name is. She lived in Westboro.

It's a sympathy note. here is what it says:

             Westboro, Wis.
              Feb. 16, 1926
Dear Howard:-
                 Please
accept my sincere
sympathy in your
great loss. My thot's
have surely been
with you, although I
haven't been able to
do anything for you.
  Hope you will all

be given strength, so
you may succeed thru
all the trials set before
you.
I tried to call you, but
couldn't get the line, so
wrote a few lines instead.
Call me sometime if you
are not too busy.
     With love
              Helen

I found out how he died. It was a kind of freak accident. A heavy sliding barn door came off and fell on him. I sounds like a very gruesome thing. I wonder who was there when it happened. I don't know much about my great grandpa. I do know he spoke and wrote in Swedish more then English. I think I have shown you a number of pictures of him. I'm sure there are a few more of him that will show up.

Here are a few random pictures.

This one was taken by S.A. Johnson from Phillips, Wis. No idea which church it is.

This is a postcard of the First Luthern Church  in Ogema, Wis.

I wish I knew what the gathering was for. Maybe a funeral.

Well that's about all I have for you today.
I hope you have a good weekend. Me, I have a wedding to attend. I just hope the weather cooperates.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Oct. 22, 1924 Rib Lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Here it was very foggy. Not a good thing for hunting season. The husband has not gotten anything, yet. The snow have come close to being all melted but today on Monday it came back. Not as much but everything is once again covered in the white stuff.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what I see when I read it:

              Rib Lake Wis
              Oct. 22, 1924
Hello Howard;
   Well, since you
say I'm honest I'll have
to write this week or I'll
 spoil my reputation.
I hope you got home
alright Saturday.
  I was in Westboro Sunday
but did not stop at
Youman's. Bannervilles
went for a ride so I went
along. We went up on 102
and then thru the curves
into Ogema and thru West-
boro and then home again

I wasn't home at all. In the
evening & went to Wellington
with Rosies & my brother.
I had a real nice time
and we stayed till the
end. I'm going to that
basket social at Niggeman's
School tonight, but I
have nothing in my
basket yet, so I'll have
to get busy. And I have
another letter to write.
I think the person that
 invented letter writing
ought to be put into
prison for life.

Think I'll close now as
I'm awfully busy
Best wishes from M.K.
I hope you can read this
I can hardly read it myself.

If I remember right she did mention Youman's  in a different letter. At that time I didn't know where it was, well it looks like it was in Westboro and not Rib Lake. I wonder how long that store was around?
The road she talks about that runs between Westboro and Rib lake, I think is Country trunk D. It is a very curvy road. I was talking to someone at work about it and said that it originally started out to be an old Indian trail. The things you learn when you least expect it.
I wonder what she put in her basket and if maybe Grandpa went to the Basket Social. I guess we will never know.
I got a little bit of a chuckle when she said he called her honest.

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to see.

Grandpa, Grandma and the first three boys with a deer Grandpa got. I wonder when this one was taken and how old the boys were.

A picture of a deer along side the road.

In honor of the recent snow fall here is a picture of the garage area. Us kids spent many days playing in that little woods.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope everyone has a very good Thanksgiving and stay safe.
Your friend always,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 10, 1924 Rib Lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
How are you? Me, I'm good. The week was the same old same old for me. Are you ready for the change in the weather? I hope you have a good Halloween.
Enough small talk, here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what it says:

         Rib Lake Wis
        Sept. 8, 1924
Hello Mr Johnson;
   How are you getting
along and how do you
like the weather? I'm
fine, the same as always.
   I finishes the book
already and I certainly
enjoyed reading it.
   Did you know that Rose
is working at Youman's again?
We were up at Westboro
Sunday, Rose's brother, my
brother, our schoolmarm &
myself. We had one grand
time getting there. We went

thru the hills and in one
place our car skidded so
that it stood crossways over
the road.
   Well, we got there anyhow
and we stayed about an hour.
Rose was out to Riverview
Sat. nite and they had a
couple of flights, same as
always.
   That Finnlauder sweetheart
of yours, Anna R is working
at Youman's too.
   Going home we took 13
but that was almost as
bad, but it hasn't so many
curves. In the evening

we went to Wellington, the
four of us in Anton Kauers
coupe! So you see we had
all the rides we wanted for
one day.
   It's getting late so I'll
close with best wishes from
              Mary K.
I almost forgot to send my
wedding picture, what do
you think of it?

I think I got most of the words right. But I'm sure I got the name of the business right. I'm not sure what it was right now. I'll check into it a little farther.
It looks like at the time Grandpa was seeing Anna R and that she is a Finnish girl. I'm not sure what Finnlauder is or if I even spelled it right.
She always seams to be on the go somewhere.

I think I have an old postcard that might be of Westboro in the 1920's. Here it is.
Most roads were not paved like they are now so it was very much of a challenge to travel comfortably. And back then there were not seat belts so you can imagine what it was like travelling done most country roads.

How do you her picture of a bride and groom? I think she had a kind of wicked sense of humor from time to time.

In honor of Halloween here are a couple of pictures of Grandpa dressed up for Halloween.

At least I think it's Grandpa. What do you think?

Well that's all I have for you today.
