Mary Kauer: Oct. 22, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
How are you? I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. Short but drama free. As each weekend goes by it's getting colder. I wonder if the hunters will have any snow of gun season.
Enough of that, here is the next letter from Mary.

For those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

          Rib Lake Wis
          Oct. 22, 1926
Hello Howard:-
  How are you coming
with your cold? Do you
think you'll make it till
spring, because I couldn't
pick any flowers now,
with all this snow on
the ground.
  So you think Mary E.
was singing for you at

the hotel. I'll have
to talk to her once,
and tell her to quit mak-
ing such a racket. Well,
Mary Schneider quit at Mathias
and i guess they have a new
girl, but I don't know her.
 We made out pretty
good at out basket social
even if the weather was
bad. They took in somewhere
around $40. That was pretty
good don't you think?

And who d'you s'pose had
my basket? Charlie. Pete
Fuchs had to pay $5.75 for
his. He's going with a Niggiman
girl and I guess that was
the only basket he bid on
so the boys knew it was her's
and raised it good and high
for him.
 But I got a peach of a
cough out there. Mrs. Bogany
says she thinks I'll get whooping
cough their kids all have it.
We're all taking Sloan's

Liniment now.
  Well, I don't know
any news or any thing
else
so I'll have to quit now
with best wishes and good
luck for you from
                    Mary
P.S. Who told you such
a fool story about me or
are you just joking.
Wouldn't I be tickled if it was? ed

Well it sounds like there was snow on the ground before the end of Oct. I wonder how much snow they had on the ground by Thanksgiving?
I know I've told you about basket socials before. It was the thing to do back then as a get together and and raise money for something or another. I wonder how much Charlie paid for hers. And why didn't Grandpa go? Or was his cold keeping him home?
As for Sloan's Liniment, I found a picture of it.

I wonder how well it worked?

I wonder what kind of fool story was being told about her? Will she ever say what it was or do we only have our imagination to go by?

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is Weberg Bro. threshing machine. No idea what year it was taken.

Grandpa & grandma Ecker
Fred & Francis
Ma & Pa (Grandma & Grandpa Johnson)

No idea who this is. It was taken at The Donner Studio 720 Collage Ave. Appleton, Wis. It could be a wedding picture.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back again for more faded history.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Oct. 22, 1924 Rib Lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Here it was very foggy. Not a good thing for hunting season. The husband has not gotten anything, yet. The snow have come close to being all melted but today on Monday it came back. Not as much but everything is once again covered in the white stuff.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what I see when I read it:

              Rib Lake Wis
              Oct. 22, 1924
Hello Howard;
   Well, since you
say I'm honest I'll have
to write this week or I'll
 spoil my reputation.
I hope you got home
alright Saturday.
  I was in Westboro Sunday
but did not stop at
Youman's. Bannervilles
went for a ride so I went
along. We went up on 102
and then thru the curves
into Ogema and thru West-
boro and then home again

I wasn't home at all. In the
evening & went to Wellington
with Rosies & my brother.
I had a real nice time
and we stayed till the
end. I'm going to that
basket social at Niggeman's
School tonight, but I
have nothing in my
basket yet, so I'll have
to get busy. And I have
another letter to write.
I think the person that
 invented letter writing
ought to be put into
prison for life.

Think I'll close now as
I'm awfully busy
Best wishes from M.K.
I hope you can read this
I can hardly read it myself.

If I remember right she did mention Youman's  in a different letter. At that time I didn't know where it was, well it looks like it was in Westboro and not Rib Lake. I wonder how long that store was around?
The road she talks about that runs between Westboro and Rib lake, I think is Country trunk D. It is a very curvy road. I was talking to someone at work about it and said that it originally started out to be an old Indian trail. The things you learn when you least expect it.
I wonder what she put in her basket and if maybe Grandpa went to the Basket Social. I guess we will never know.
I got a little bit of a chuckle when she said he called her honest.

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to see.

Grandpa, Grandma and the first three boys with a deer Grandpa got. I wonder when this one was taken and how old the boys were.

A picture of a deer along side the road.

In honor of the recent snow fall here is a picture of the garage area. Us kids spent many days playing in that little woods.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope everyone has a very good Thanksgiving and stay safe.
Your friend always,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert: Nov. 8, 1921 Chicago

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. But now I'm older by another year. Well I can't get younger not matter how hard I try. So I except the inevitable. I am becoming wiser, I think. Oh well.
Here is the next letter from Theresa.

If you are wondering why the first page is discolored it's because there was a newspaper clipping included. Before I show you that here is what the letter says in case you can't make out some of it.

                                 Chicago Ill
                                  Nov. 8-1921
Dear Howard:
     Received your most
welcome letter and almost
gave up hopes of hearing
from you again. I think
the pictures turned out fine.
    It has rained all day,
then turned to hail and
now it is snowing. Fine
weather I calls it.
     I would't mind having
a nice fox throw. I think
you got a good price for
              2
it. What do you mean by
getting in so late in the
morning from a basket
social. I haven't been in
bed before two o'clock in
the morning since I
left Hayward. I am
sorry to hear that Thomas's
hand is not well yet. I
hope it is not worse.
My mother said you should tell your father
that the criple came to
Chic with her and is going
              3
to work here and rent
the farm. Well I guess
I will ring off hoping
to heat from you soon
                As ever
                Thres

P.S. Katheryn Clary
must of put this in
the paper about her dad.

Here is the clipping she sent.
I won't type it up. So just click on it to make it bigger. I thought it was a very cute story the way it is written. I wonder how much of it is true.I wonder if Katheryn wrote it herself.

She said something about wanting a fox throw. I did find a picture of grandpa with a fox.
I wonder if it is one in the same.

She mentioned something about a basket social that Grandpa got home very late.

A basket social sometimes known as Box socials was a chance for men and women to spend time together while giving groups a chance to raise money for things like churches, schools and other needs. Sometimes these events lead to marriage. Each lady in attendance would bring a basket containing a lunch for two. Men would bid on the baskets or a certain one to spend special time with the lady who made the basket. It has been popular off and on over the years.

I also wonder what Thomas did to his hand. I hope it didn't cause him to much trouble.
I also wonder who she was referring to as cripple and who's farm was being rented out.

I decided to show you what was on the back of one of the clippings.
To me that's sounds like a very good price for a eight course meal.  A thousand wives agree with me. Do you?

Here are a couple of random pictures for you to look at.
I'm not sure who this is but the date on the side is Jun 64.
Just another portrait with no name or studio name.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope everyone has a good week.
Till next time.
As ever,
Sandy
