Mary Kauer: Feb. 23, 1926 Rib Lake Wis.

Dear Friends,
How was your weekend? Mine was a half and half kind of weekend. Half wet and half dry. It made it very interesting for the wedding I attended. It was an outdoor wedding. They do say it is suppose to be a symbol of good luck. But it was not a heavy rain just drizzly.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary:

Here is what is say for those of you that have a hard time reading it.

                Rib lake, Wis
                Feb. 23, 1926
Hello Howard:-
  I got both of your
letters so I spose it's
time to answer now.
You said it was so lone-
some without your dad.
well, I can imagine
how home would seem
without pa, even if I
do scrap with him once
in a while.
 I started this letter
last nite but went to
sleep over it so I'll
try my luck now. I
bet you'd never guess

what I do now. Just
think I can roller skate.
Wilma had a lot of
fun the first time I
went because I couldn't
stand on the skates
but now I can skate
pretty good and gee
its fun. Almost more
than ice skating.
There is one (big Swede)
that goes and he's a
peach of a skater. He
goes frontwards,
backwards, sideways
and around in a circle.
When I can do all that
I think I deserve a
medal.

So Lavina and Elmer
are married at last. well
here's wishing them good
luck. I guess Lavina
worked here at Dick's
awhile, didn't she? I
saw her a couple of times,
at least I thot it was
her, but never to speak
to her. I think it's awful
that so many Swedes
come to Rib Lake. I'm
afraid there will be war
between them and the
Germans pretty soon.
Because you know they
never agree.
Well, I'll have to quit

writing now or I have
to up town yet and then
it will be supper time.
      Good luck and best
      Wishes from M.K.
Wilma made a silk kimono
for herself and she said
she'd lend it to for a week
when I get married but
I told her you wouldn't
have me and I didn't
know of anyone else
that would so I guess
she'll have to wear it herself.

It sounds like Grandpa missed his dad. For her to get two letters from him in one day tells me he had it bad for her but, they never really did anything about it.
Elmer finally got married. I hope I spelled her name right.
She always has to mention things about Swedes and Germans. I wonder if there was a lot of tension between the two groups back then or was it just something Mary liked to focus on. Maybe someday I will learn if there was.
I wonder who got to wear the silk kimono first on a special occasion.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

Here is a picture of I think the same couple I showed you a couple of posts ago. It was taken I think in Birnamwood, Wis.(I think I spelled it wrong) Still not sure who they are.

I think this is Grandpa's brother Thomas.( We knew him as Uncle Thomas)

No idea who this is. But I do wonder if it might be Grandpa's dad. So that would make him my great grandpa.

Well that's about all I have for you to day. I hope you can come back on Friday for the next letter and random pictures.
Enjoy your week.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Jan. 11, 1926 Rib lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope your weekend was as good as mine. My youngest daughter got married. So I'm now a mother-in-law. We kept it small, yet still open. There were no dramas that I know of. This week I will be puppy and guinea pig sitting. I hope they don't provide the drama I have avoided this weekend.
Here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

                 Rib Lake, Wis
                 Jan. 11, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   I don't know whether
I'll b be able to write a letter
tonite or not. it was so
hot up here that I got a
headache and now I'm sleepy
so if I make too many mistakes
it's not my fault. I can't
even think of anything to
write. I washed my hair
today and I guess I

washed out all my common
sense. But I guess I'll be
all right by tomorrow morning.
Because they say (Early to bed
and early to rise, makes a man
healthy, wealthy, and wise.
There's going to be a masquerade
here Friday evening and Mrs. Hypke
is busy making suits for Mrs.
Bogumill and Wilma. They are
going to be dressed alike in red
suits with long tight pants
and red caps with black tassels.

I wish it was summer so
more of the kids from the
country could come in.
Then I'd mask, too. But I'm
going over to look on, any-
how.
  Well. I hope you have
a good time at Swanson's.
But don't make Thomas
jealous again. All at once
he'll light into you and
you'll be going around with a
black eye. And say kiss
Inez for me when you

see her, will you?
By the way the wind blew
today it doesn't look as tho
you could come over again
Even if you are a big Swede
I guess the weatherman - thinks
you wasted enough gasoline
this summer.
Well, so long, I guess this is
a pretty long letter, isn't it?
I hope you can read it.
   Good nite and good
luck from Mary.

Not a whole lot here. I wonder what the occasion for a masquerade was. I also wonder what the two women were trying to be.  They sound like they would have looked very interesting.
I like the comment of washing her hair and washing her common sense out.
And of course the old saying. Who has not heard that one many times before?

Here are a few random pictures for you to see.

I thought I would share another wedding picture since my daughter just tied the knot this last weekend. I do not know who they are.

I don't know the occasion for this picture. The only one I know for sure is Grandma. She is the one on the right.

This one was taken when Grandma was was a lot younger then the one before.

Well that's about all I have for you this time.
So enjoy your week.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Jan. 5, 1926 Rib lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was quiet before the major excitement. My youngest daughter is getting married. So it will be a very busy one.  I'll fill you in sometime in the future but for now I'll share with you the next letter from Mary. The first letter from 1926.

As always here is what it says:

              Rib Lake Wis
              Jan.4, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   well, since you prom-
ised to write first I guess
I'll write, too. it's early yet
and I don't know what
else to do. I spose I had
better go to bed. Five hours
sleep in two nites isn't
very much, is it? Say, I'm
using the pencil you got
from Thars but of course

you can't blame the
pencil for the scrawly
writing that I do.
  Have you seen your (little
sweetheart) since Sunday? Don't
tease her too much, you
know that's hard on a
person. All at once she'll
quit you and then, what
will you do? Then it'll be
too late to cry.
How did you feel this
morning. Did the boss fire
you for falling asleep on

the job? Wouldn't I laugh
at you then? I overslept
and didn't hear the alarm
at all. Mrs. Hipke woke
me and said, you better
get up, it's way after six.
Well, it didn't take me
very long to get up and
get breakfast. By that I
forgot all about being
tired.
How did you get home?
Were the roads all icy or
could you drive without

saying your last prayers
every minute.
Well, so long and good
luck from       Mary
Wilma is laughing so
much I can't write anymore

It sounds like the two of them still hang out together. But she still mentioned a sweetheart. I wonder if he was still seeing Rose. Or was it a distraction trying to make it sound like he was involved with someone other than her.
And you thought today was complicated. They had their own drama back then.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

I don't know who they are. There is writing on the back but it's hard for me to make out. Maybe you can .

This is my cousin Jenny at age 11. It will be her birthday on Sunday.

No idea who these people are. Boy it sure looks more clear on the computer then the actual picture itself.

Well that's all I have to share with you today. I'll be a little busy this weekend. You know with a daughter getting married and all.
So till Tuesday. Have a great weekend.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Dec. 30, 1925 Rib lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. It was on the cool side and drizzly off and on Sunday to top things off.
This next letter, from Mary, is the last one from 1925.

As always here is what it says:

            Thursday, 12 noon

Dear Howard:-
       Thanks a lot for this
I think it's just jade Mrs. B.
says no one will be able to
steal my stationary now. She
brought the box up and she
said she wouldn't go until I
opened it. My writing is awful
here but I'm standing so don't blame
me.
John left this morning as he
has to be there tomorrow.
How is your cold now? Any
better or must I come and be
your nurse for awhile. I spose
Emma Roseen is gone by this
time or you could get her.

Ma was in here a few minutes
this morning. She said Anton
S slept all day Monday and all
Monday nite. He went to camp
Tuesday morning. Joe went Monday
but Mary S. was here yesterday
and she said Hank Becker was
home from camp and he said Joe
was so tired Monday evening that
he went to bed without supper. Well,
I was pretty tired myself. I was
getting dizzy already.
I think I had better quit and
wash the dishes now or I'll get fired
oh say Mrs. Hiphs wants to come
back and stay up here but Clara
says Pete won't have it. Gee she'd
have a fit if she saw how things
go up here. Well so long love from
                                             Me.

Grandpa sure like to buy stationary for the girls that write him. But I think he spent more on Mary because it is personalized.
I wonder how long all these people were at the camp? Joe must really work extra hard if he was so tired.
I know I'm still not spelling the one name right, hopefully  soon I can get it spelled right, so bare with me.
Gee I wonder what kind of things went on there that might cause someone to have a fit?

Here are a few random pictures for you to see.

This one was to big to scan so I had to take a picture of it. At the bottom is a phrase in Swedish which translates to  "Praise the lord my soul!" As for the age of this one I think it might be from the 1890's, maybe.

On the back it says, Aunt and Uncle Johnson. No idea who.

In honor of planting season here is a scene from a time gone by. I wonder who they are.

Well that's about all I have to share with you this time. I hope you will stop by on Friday for another post and the beginning of 1926.
Your friend,
Sandy

Rose E. Hoelscher: March 20, 1922 Albert Lea

Dear Friends,
Hope are you? Me, I'm doing good. My week was uneventful. My husband had a fright on Thursday. He was raking some hay when suddenly it was almost like a kind of tornado that took the hay and started whipping it around. If it was a whirl wind it was the biggest he had ever seen. When it was done over half of the field was scattered all over including a near by road. If only he had a camera with him so I could prove it happened.
Anyway here is the next letter from Rose.

It's a little hard to make some of it out so here is what I make out.

                 Albert Lea Minn.
                  March 20, 1922
                  Hoelscher's farm

Dear Friend
I received your welcome letter some time
ago, and of course should of answered
sooner. It is some job to write when
a person keeps putting it off.
I wrote one letter since the last one
I wrote to you
Well how's the weather where you live
It is very horrid weather here now
It has been raining soon and it very
cloudy yet no sunshine at all

You say it is the hardest winter
you can remember. Well it is not the
hardest Winter Minn has had since
I can remember We didn't have much
snow this Winter but lot of ice.
You asked if we had any Parties
here not now, There isn't any it is
lent now I wouldn't go any way
if there was some
I there a lot of parties where you are
There is a lot of dairying in the country
for most farmers have a lot
of cattle
You say your Brother and you
have a Ford together If I lived nearer
you Maybe you would give me
a ride in your Ford Ha Ha
I sure was surprised you get
the pictures they were just
fine and dandy was very glad to get them
thanks very much for them
Well the pictures had than were
no good on good at all the worse

I ever seen but just as soon get
a good Picture of myself I sure will
remember to send you one
How's that it is the best I can do
O say do you know a girl by the name
of Carol Johnson of Ogema Wis. the time
my brother had his name in the paper
she wrote him a letter he answered
but she never wrote again
Well as news is scarce I will close
for this time hoping to hear from
you soon Your friend

                                                       R. box 26

In this letter I learned one thing about Rose. She was not a party kind of girl.
Grandpa must have told her that it was the hardest winter he could remember. At least at that time.
Here is a picture from the scrap book.
Four Oconomowoc farmers--(left to right) Oscar Stiemke, Art and George Heubner and Leonard
Rowe-- dig their way to freedom on Highway P in Waukesha county a mile north of the village of
Gifford-- Journal Staff Photo
Remember the scrap book is from about 1936.

Not to much to comment on in this letter, so here are a couple of random pictures.
I don't know who is standing on top of this hay. I choose this one because of what happened to my husband yesterday. Just imagine this hay being whirled around in the air in front of you. Minus the horses of course. To me it's a scary thought of almost being caught up in something like that.

I choose this picture in honor of a cousin who is getting married this weekend. It was taken at a studio called Wilde in Shawano Wis. I'm not sure who this couple is but they look to be on the young side. I also want to mention that my youngest daughter is engaged and getting married next year in May.

Well news is scarce so I will close for now.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert: Dec. 3, 1919 Chicago plus other pictures

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm just doing my best to put up with this bad case of cabin fever. Any way here is the next letter from Theresa.

As always here is what she wrote:
Dear Friend;
I am very sorry I
could not answer your
first letter but I have been
so busy I have not had time
to do anything. Of course a
poor excuse is better than
none eh!? Well how is
the weather out there. We
had out first snow Thanks-
giving day. It only fell
about an inch. But it is
snowing today again and
has been all day this being
nine o'clock. I am working
at Montgomery Ward now.
I have a pretty nice position
            2
in an office down there.
There are several young
boys about your age working
there. I received your candy
and thank you for it very
much. My mother enjoyed
it very much. I'll tell you
the funny part about it was
some of the chocolates were
bent a little out of shape. I
suppose you thought I had
forgotten all about you eh?
Well that's to bad you
see I didn't. I went to a
dance last Friday and had
a pretty nice time but I
like the kind of dances you
             3
people in the country
have. The main thing out
here is to see the leading
plays such as Jack Pickford
in In Wrong. I saw that
Sunday I am going to see
Margret Clark in Luck
in Pawn. I guess it is going to be
good. There was an accident
right in front of my music
teachers. He is on the corner
of a boulevard and a street
car line. There was a fellow
in a machine turning off of
the boulevard and
turned right into the street
car wrecking his car and
            4
hurting not only himself but
also his wife, The steering wheel
bumped him in the
stomach so he couldn't stand
up. His wife was all cut up
by the flying glass. The
ambulance was called and
took both of them away. The
machine started to burn
after the accident but it was
extinguished shortly after.
You should have seen that
machine the engine was way
back on the back seat ha ha
Well not quite that bad but
almost. Well give our best
regards to all the rest and yourself.
Theresa

She sounds like she is having a good time, no real worries or at least not whining to Grandpa about any other problems that are going on between her and Kathryn.
After some thinking I now know that when they say they are seeing plays they are going to see a movie.
I've look up the two she mentioned.
Jackpickford.jpg
Jack Pickford was a Canadian born American actor. He was also the brother to Mary Pickford. He was never ever able to become as well know as his sister. He was married three times. He died at age 36 Jan. 3 1933 in Paris France. I couldn't find the film. Just that he was in it.
Margret Clark was actually Marguerite Clark. She was born in Cincinnati Ohio.

ClarkMarguerite1916.jpg
She acted on stage and silent films. She died at age 57 Sept 25 1940. I tried to find more a definition of the film but could not find much a about it.

Back then they called cars machines. But it won't be long and they will be calling them cars.

Now I'm including another random picture of someones wedding picture. If anyone knows who they are don't be afraid to tell me.

Here are another couple of pictures that might interest someone who might have logging memories.
Looks like fun just hanging around at the top of a pole. Maybe it's where Cirque du Soleil got it's start.
There might be a chance that the short guy might be Grandpa's brother Thomas.

Well that's all I have time for today.
Till next time.
Your Friend,
Sandy
