Mary Kauer: Aug. 27, 1927 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
The weekend is finally here! And it's going to be a beautiful one at that. I'll be able to start getting things cleaned up and fixed up outside. It's going to be in the 70's. I plan on enjoying it as much as possible.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Mary:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

             Rib Lake Wis
             Friday eve.
Dear Howard:-
   Well, the excite-
ment is over for this
week. I mean Amelia
Fuch's wedding. She was
married Wednesday. It
certainly was a pretty
wedding, but gee if it
had been me I would
have been so excited
that I couldn't stand
but she said it didn't
bother her. Her hus-
bands name is George
Rust. He is from Chicago.
He got a pretty bad
bump on the way to
church. They crossed a

bridge at 55 miles so
you can imagine what
it was like.
We were over at
Kauers tonite and my
aunt said that in the
old country they did so
much shooting at Weddings
instead of shivaree  and
Anton said they ought to
shoot the people that
get married.
I was hopes that
Rose would get married this
fall but it doesn't look
like it. I promised her
all my hope chest if she
did but so far that has
not helped.
I s'pose your school will

start soon now. Agnes
is coming up next
Sunday. Time certainly
flies doesn't it? And
John is going soon. Rose
and I want to go when he
does.
Kitty said that her bro-
thers Lambert wants to get
a woman cook and three
girls for cookers this year
so we told her to take
take the cook's job and
we would put in an ap-
plication for cooks. Gosh
wouldn't we be making
good money. Kitty's husband
would say, yes but little
of it.
Are you going to the

fair next week? I don't
know whether we will
go or not they aren't hav-
ing a Rib Lake day.
  It's 11 P.M. already so
I'm kind of tired and I'll
say good nite
              Mary.

It sounds like there was a lot of excitement at that time. People getting married was the draw at that time. I wonder if Rose was able to get married any time soon? I wonder if Agnes moved to Chicago or if they stayed up here.
I wonder if everyone was able to get the cook they wanted for the camp or wherever they were needed?
August is Fair time. I wonder if Grandpa went. I wonder which fair she was talking about.

Here are two more cards from the Earthquake of 1906.

 6. Forming bread line at Jefferson Square.

7. Looking east from the corner Pine and Stockton, showing the ruins of the Mills Building.

Just think it will be 110 years since the big one in California on Monday. I follow a site that shows earthquakes around the world. Today and yesterday were very active by Japan, they had a 7 today, plus by Vanuatu had a couple of 6's and Guatemala also had a 6. I wonder if the US could be headed to a another big one some day soon?

Since she was talking about weddings I thought I would share a wedding picture of a time gone by.

No idea who they are or when it was taken. This might be the last wedding picture like this one or I might show you what is in a very old photo album but they will be harder to scan or I might have to take a picture of them to show you some time. But not today.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
Enjoy your weekend, I know I will.
I hope you will come back soon for more fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Nov. 12, 1924 Rib Lake Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was quiet. On Sunday nite after dark, after hunting season officially close, I think we had a whole herb of deer in our yard. My husband said he counted at least 15. But I don't know if any of them were bucks. So who ever said the deer count was down could not have been in my neighborhood.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what it says:

                  Rib Lake Wisc.
                  Nov. 12, 1924
Hello Howard:-
     I almost forgot to
write to you so now
I'll do it -- right away
before I forget again.
How are you? I hope
fine the same as my-
self. I am kind of tired
because I was up at
our church fair last
night. I had about a
bushel of confetti in
my clothes after I got
home. It was quite cold
last nite but the folks

were all in. I saw my mother
so I'm not lonesome today.
 I saw Anna Roinila
Sunday Evening and she
said Rose was coming
home today, but I haven't
seen her. I thot she
would come in to see
me.
  Hows the weather
in Ogema? It rained here
yesterday and I hoped
it would snow but
nothing doing. This is
all the news I know so
goodbye        from
                    M. Kauer

Not a lot here. But I wonder what kind of church fair it was that there was confetti being thrown around.
There was one more thing she included with this letter. A cartoon from a paper.
I like what she wrote at the bottom.
Is this so? Me for an old maid.

It kind of makes me wonder if she wanted to get married or if she wanted to make sure others knew she didn't, at that time. I wonder how many relationships are like this. The guy is perfect before the ceremony but after they turn into a monster.  If your wondering about mine. It has it's ups and down like every relationship does. The monster inside is really just a puppy dog.

Anyway here are a few random pictures I choose to share with you.

I don't know who these people are. The picture was taken in Algoma, Wis. at Wilbur Studio.

I'm not sure who they are but I chose this picture because it looks like a young girl and maybe her mother sitting on a porch enjoying each others company.

I have no idea who this is but I just had to share the hairdo she has. It's telling me this picture was taken in the 60's. What do you think?

Well that's all the news I have for you today.
so goodbye.
Your friend,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert; Jan. 6, 1920 Chicago, plus random pictures

Dear Friends,
I hope this letter finds you all well. Me? Tired from work. But I'm still going to show you the next letter from Theresa. This letter tells you what happened between the two girls.

In case it's hard to read here is what it says:

Dear Friend,
I received your letter
sometime ago and I don't wrote one but
know now wether I mailed
it or not. I received your
stationary the day before Christmas
and thank you a hundred
times. Would you please send
me some of Casey Jones letters
as I am anxious to see what
she said about. She was
only jealous of me that's all
she was afraid I was

vamping all the boys that's all.
The way it came about that my
mother shut the door in her face
was because because Adeline asked
me if I saw her pocket book and I
told her no. Then about a month
later her and Casey called me &
asked if I had the pocket, as much
as to say I took it. It made my
mother so angry she just shut
the door. I am glad you like
my Christmas present and I thank
you for all the thanks you gave
me. Well I hope your mother
is better by this time. Did you say
you had a victrola. Well I must
come and visit you sometime.
I quit my position at Monkey
Wards today. I am going to work
 at the American Can Company.
Some job believe me. I got the
most beautiful Japanese Mink
fur coat from my mother for

Christmas that you ever saw.
I got a pretty hat from
her to go with it. Are you
still taking pictures of your
cats. They certainly are pretty
Your box of stationary was
all crushed but the paper
was all right. Well I guess
I will close now. I will
write more next. Don't
forget to answer immediately.
Your Friend
Theresa

Well now you know Theresa's side of the story. As for why she is calling Kathryn Casey Jones I'm thinking it might have been just a way of getting around writing Katheryn's name, for now.
As for The American Can Company, it was incorporated in 1901. it was started by Irving Fein. Originally it was named Fein Container corp.  I think now it is known as American National can.
It looks like Grandpa like giving gifts. First candy and now stationary. I wonder how much he spent on gifts like these over the years?

Now here is another random wedding portrait.
If you know who this is just let me know.

Here is an interesting postcard plus writing on the back.

I wonder what year this one taken.

Here is a picture of Westboro. Wis. I don't know what year this is from. It could be the twenties.

Here is another random picture. Just another reason why you should always identify people in pictures so people in the future know who you were and what you looked like.

Well that's about it for now. I hope you enjoyed it.
Till next time, may you and yours have a good weekend.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert; Dec 18, 1919, Chicago

Dear Friends,
How are you? Me I'm starting to feel a little better with the snow finally starting to melt. Well it's Tuesday so it's time for another letter. This one is from Theresa.

In case it's hard to read here is what it says:

Dear Friend;
Well I am answering
your letter received several
days ago. It's so near
Christmas and I have to
work till 6:35 and never
get home till nearly eight
o'clock and then I am so
tired I fall for the bunk. I am
not peeved at you or anything
like that so don't get excited
No my music lesson consists
of cornet and piano. My
music teacher is giving
a Christmas party. Oh boy
that's when the fun begins
I remember one time about
                2
two years ago when the
saloons were open, my music
teacher and several of the
others even, women were
stewed and us kids well we
had a heck of a time. I got
home that night, morning
rather, at 5:30. There were
six boys and Catheryn &
I. You can imagine.
Well I hope we have just
as good a time this year.
Say by the way if you
want to be a real good
sport for me let me know
if Katheryn has written any-
thing in her letters about
              3
me. You need not be
afraid I will say any-
thing to her about your
 address or what you are
going to tell me. Where
do you work since you
live in such a big city
it seems as if there is nothing
to do but walk the streets.
You can write in pencil
if you want to I don't care
because I know what it is
when your on a farm.
Well , just to be a good sport
my birthday happens to
fall on the fifteenth day
of March nineteen hundred
                4
and twenty ha ha. I
am going to be sour seventeen
come to think of it. I am
getting rather old gee whiz
I better wake up and go
on a honeymoon soon.
How about it eh! Oh well
I am nutty nuty yet so
good bye for this time.
Wishing you and the
rest a Merry, Merry,
Xmas and a Happy
new Year,
Your Friend,
Theresa

It sounds like Theresa is working hard. She mentioned the saloons not being open. I know this was the start of prohibition. I looked it up and it became the eighteenth amendment Jan. 16 1919 and was activated one year later on Jan. 17 1920. It lasted until Dec 5, 1933.
I wonder how good she was at the cornet and piano?

Here is a random wedding picture of someone.
I can't make out what the name of the studio but I think it was in Appleton Wis.

This is Grandpa. I wonder how old he was in this picture?

It looks like they must have been have a boxing match.

I wonder if he made it himself or if someone else did?

Well that's all I have for you this time. i hope this letter finds you happy healthy.
So till next time.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Lucila: Dec.3, 1919 Chicago

Dear Friends,
How are you? I think it's going to start to warm up here.
This next letter I think is from maybe a sister of Theresa. If not a sister a very close friend. She is I think writing to let Grandpa know that Theresa was not mad at him. Well here is the letter.

In case it's hard to read here is what it says:
Howard Johnson
Dear Friend,
Theresa isn't sore
at you. She hasn't any
thing to be mad at.
She has been busy&
I guess hes didn't have
 time. She goes to her
 music lesson almost
every other day. Of else
she is at her girl
friends house in the
evening. She answered
your letter last night.
Theresa is going to Wilmette
to-night with her
music teacher & other
        II
pupils. We have not
very much snow here at
all. My mother put
the thermometer out
this morning (that was
about six o'clock & it
was 5 above zero. You
certainly have it cold out
there. I wouldn't like
to be there. Br-r-r-r.
We have fun with our
sleds. The snow is little
but it is pressed down
hard & swell to coast on.
We pull each other &
tumble in the snow
       III
I have a gay time. I
thought of having a sleigh
ride party. I am president
of a little club for the
girls my sister, Valeria &
I originated. We could
have the party from
the dues. We get three
cents from each girl every
week. If we were in
the country now probably
we could have a hay-
rack party. That's lots of
fun. I went to one & we
had the best time. We
each at the end of it
        IV
got a little bundle of hay
with a ribbon tied ar-
round it. The kids are
calling me to come out be-
cause they are going to
have a ky-y. I don't know
how to spell it but it
is a long chain of sleds
& about 5 children pulling
it. There's about 15 boys &
fifteen girls out there now
& we're going to round some
more up. Best regards
Your friend,
Lucila

Well I hope that is her name.  She sounds like she is younger, but I could be wrong.
What she is trying to maybe explain with the sleds might be a version of crack the whip with sleds. We use to do crack the whip when we ice skated.  When she says gay time, it means she had lots of fun. Boy how meaning of some words can change over time.
Before I go to much farther with the letters, my grandpa name was Howard Johnson. Not the Hotel one just a Howard Johnson. So don't go saying it's the well known one where you may have stayed.

Now it's time for some more random pictures.
A wedding portrait.

Here are a couple of pictures that were also postcards.

I wish I knew what kind of class this was from 1914.
This is a post card of Rib Lake. Not sure when it was but it looks like there was a lot of lumber things going on, I think.

Here is just one more random picture.
Not sure who they are but there is a chance that the tall one in the back is Grandpa.
I think this picture could have been taken in the 19 teens or 1920's. What do you think?
Well that's about it for now.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Kathryn Clary: Nov. 28, 1919 Chicago

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm fine except for being very tired of too much snow.
Any way here is the next letter from Kathryn.
Here is what is says in case it's hard to read. This time I will try to correct the mistakes.

Dear Friend:
I received your letter and box of candy and certainly appreciate
your thoughtfulness in sending it. I was very glad to hear from you
so soon as I tho't maybe you would not write as soon as that. The
candy was very good and your letter very nice. I don't mind your putting
Dear Kathryn down it does not make any difference to me. Yet this
letter was very nice and that's the kind I like. So you say you do not
get lonesome out there, well if you like it that makes it still better.
So you get home that early eh? Well I must say that it is early, what do
you think? Oh I think Santa Clause will come to you I don't think you
are quite that bad do you? Well I do hope he comes to me because I want
so many things that I can't count them all. What all do you want? Yes I
have a camera, what made you ask that question? Do you still take as many
pictures? We don't take them very often lately we're too busy with shows.
I go to a show almost every nite. Theresa and I don't go together anymore
her mother shut the door in our face the other day when my girl friend and
I were over there and I don't know what now why Theresa is mad and I care
less. If that's the way she is I don't care to go with her any more, she
thinks she can make the whole bunch fall for her just because she has a
lousy Cheverlet and she found she was mistaken. Her mother tho't that I
wrote some fool letter to Theresa that I don't even know anything about nor
and I going to find out either, if she gets sore at me for something she
thinks I've done and can't prove it or is not sure of it that is her fault
and not mine. I can have all the friends I want and I don't have to vamp
them as she does. I don't care whether you tell her this or not because it
is only the truth anyhow. I guess she is too busy vamping some one to bother
writing to you otherwise I do not know anything about her. I wouldn't give
her Greetings for the President so if you want to give her any greetings
you will have to write to her yourself and tell she has not enough brains
to write to you and I can't help it. I suppose you think I am rather fresh
but I am just telling you some plain facts. No I have not been skating this
year yet but I expect to as soon as they freeze the parks. The first snow
we have had was Thanksgiving Eve and it is not very cold here, is it cold out
there? How is your mother, father, Thomas, Elmer, the cat, cows, chickens &
of course yourself? I hope you are all enjoying the best health. Say
how much would you charge for a case eggs? Can you get sugar out there?
We can't get any out here. Do you read books very often? What kind do you
like? I like mystery stories don't you? I hope you had a nice time Thanks-
giving did you? I slept until 12:00 pm and then I got up and ate my dinner
and fooled around the house until about eight o'clock and then I went to
the show. Our Boss is not down today and of course everyone in the office
is stalling with the exception of me. Theresa does not work here anymore and
so you see we are away from each other entirely. I'll close now.
Your best friend,
K. Shirley Clary

The more she wrote the more upset she made herself upset with Theresa. I've looked up a couple of definitions for vamp and vamping this is what I found.
Vamp: A woman who uses her physical allure to attract and exploit men: a forward girl who endeavors to entice or captivate men.
Or maybe she meant the upper leather of a boot or shoe, but I doubt it.
Some of it will be explained in future letters.

I've decided not to post any more winter pictures from the scrape book. I am instead showing you a few pictures of people I do not know. Maybe you do.

This is someone's wedding picture. It was taken at Dake (I think) Medford WI

Here a couple of logging pictures. I like the guy who is just hanging around. How about the guys sitting on top of the log pile? No idea who they are.

Well that's about all I have time for now.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy
