Theresa Lambert: Dec. 3, 1919 Chicago plus other pictures

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm just doing my best to put up with this bad case of cabin fever. Any way here is the next letter from Theresa.

As always here is what she wrote:
Dear Friend;
I am very sorry I
could not answer your
first letter but I have been
so busy I have not had time
to do anything. Of course a
poor excuse is better than
none eh!? Well how is
the weather out there. We
had out first snow Thanks-
giving day. It only fell
about an inch. But it is
snowing today again and
has been all day this being
nine o'clock. I am working
at Montgomery Ward now.
I have a pretty nice position
            2
in an office down there.
There are several young
boys about your age working
there. I received your candy
and thank you for it very
much. My mother enjoyed
it very much. I'll tell you
the funny part about it was
some of the chocolates were
bent a little out of shape. I
suppose you thought I had
forgotten all about you eh?
Well that's to bad you
see I didn't. I went to a
dance last Friday and had
a pretty nice time but I
like the kind of dances you
             3
people in the country
have. The main thing out
here is to see the leading
plays such as Jack Pickford
in In Wrong. I saw that
Sunday I am going to see
Margret Clark in Luck
in Pawn. I guess it is going to be
good. There was an accident
right in front of my music
teachers. He is on the corner
of a boulevard and a street
car line. There was a fellow
in a machine turning off of
the boulevard and
turned right into the street
car wrecking his car and
            4
hurting not only himself but
also his wife, The steering wheel
bumped him in the
stomach so he couldn't stand
up. His wife was all cut up
by the flying glass. The
ambulance was called and
took both of them away. The
machine started to burn
after the accident but it was
extinguished shortly after.
You should have seen that
machine the engine was way
back on the back seat ha ha
Well not quite that bad but
almost. Well give our best
regards to all the rest and yourself.
Theresa

She sounds like she is having a good time, no real worries or at least not whining to Grandpa about any other problems that are going on between her and Kathryn.
After some thinking I now know that when they say they are seeing plays they are going to see a movie.
I've look up the two she mentioned.
Jackpickford.jpg
Jack Pickford was a Canadian born American actor. He was also the brother to Mary Pickford. He was never ever able to become as well know as his sister. He was married three times. He died at age 36 Jan. 3 1933 in Paris France. I couldn't find the film. Just that he was in it.
Margret Clark was actually Marguerite Clark. She was born in Cincinnati Ohio.

ClarkMarguerite1916.jpg
She acted on stage and silent films. She died at age 57 Sept 25 1940. I tried to find more a definition of the film but could not find much a about it.

Back then they called cars machines. But it won't be long and they will be calling them cars.

Now I'm including another random picture of someones wedding picture. If anyone knows who they are don't be afraid to tell me.

Here are another couple of pictures that might interest someone who might have logging memories.
Looks like fun just hanging around at the top of a pole. Maybe it's where Cirque du Soleil got it's start.
There might be a chance that the short guy might be Grandpa's brother Thomas.

Well that's all I have time for today.
Till next time.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Kathryn Clary: Nov. 28, 1919 Chicago

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm fine except for being very tired of too much snow.
Any way here is the next letter from Kathryn.
Here is what is says in case it's hard to read. This time I will try to correct the mistakes.

Dear Friend:
I received your letter and box of candy and certainly appreciate
your thoughtfulness in sending it. I was very glad to hear from you
so soon as I tho't maybe you would not write as soon as that. The
candy was very good and your letter very nice. I don't mind your putting
Dear Kathryn down it does not make any difference to me. Yet this
letter was very nice and that's the kind I like. So you say you do not
get lonesome out there, well if you like it that makes it still better.
So you get home that early eh? Well I must say that it is early, what do
you think? Oh I think Santa Clause will come to you I don't think you
are quite that bad do you? Well I do hope he comes to me because I want
so many things that I can't count them all. What all do you want? Yes I
have a camera, what made you ask that question? Do you still take as many
pictures? We don't take them very often lately we're too busy with shows.
I go to a show almost every nite. Theresa and I don't go together anymore
her mother shut the door in our face the other day when my girl friend and
I were over there and I don't know what now why Theresa is mad and I care
less. If that's the way she is I don't care to go with her any more, she
thinks she can make the whole bunch fall for her just because she has a
lousy Cheverlet and she found she was mistaken. Her mother tho't that I
wrote some fool letter to Theresa that I don't even know anything about nor
and I going to find out either, if she gets sore at me for something she
thinks I've done and can't prove it or is not sure of it that is her fault
and not mine. I can have all the friends I want and I don't have to vamp
them as she does. I don't care whether you tell her this or not because it
is only the truth anyhow. I guess she is too busy vamping some one to bother
writing to you otherwise I do not know anything about her. I wouldn't give
her Greetings for the President so if you want to give her any greetings
you will have to write to her yourself and tell she has not enough brains
to write to you and I can't help it. I suppose you think I am rather fresh
but I am just telling you some plain facts. No I have not been skating this
year yet but I expect to as soon as they freeze the parks. The first snow
we have had was Thanksgiving Eve and it is not very cold here, is it cold out
there? How is your mother, father, Thomas, Elmer, the cat, cows, chickens &
of course yourself? I hope you are all enjoying the best health. Say
how much would you charge for a case eggs? Can you get sugar out there?
We can't get any out here. Do you read books very often? What kind do you
like? I like mystery stories don't you? I hope you had a nice time Thanks-
giving did you? I slept until 12:00 pm and then I got up and ate my dinner
and fooled around the house until about eight o'clock and then I went to
the show. Our Boss is not down today and of course everyone in the office
is stalling with the exception of me. Theresa does not work here anymore and
so you see we are away from each other entirely. I'll close now.
Your best friend,
K. Shirley Clary

The more she wrote the more upset she made herself upset with Theresa. I've looked up a couple of definitions for vamp and vamping this is what I found.
Vamp: A woman who uses her physical allure to attract and exploit men: a forward girl who endeavors to entice or captivate men.
Or maybe she meant the upper leather of a boot or shoe, but I doubt it.
Some of it will be explained in future letters.

I've decided not to post any more winter pictures from the scrape book. I am instead showing you a few pictures of people I do not know. Maybe you do.

This is someone's wedding picture. It was taken at Dake (I think) Medford WI

Here a couple of logging pictures. I like the guy who is just hanging around. How about the guys sitting on top of the log pile? No idea who they are.

Well that's about all I have time for now.
Till next time.

Sandy

Kathryn Clary: Nov. 19, 1919 plus a scrapbook picture and a random logging picture

Dear Friends,
How are you? Me? Buried in the snow. Is it ever going to stop?
Well, here is the next letter from Kathryn.
Because of the wrinkles if you can't read it here is what is says:

Dear Howard:
I suppose you think I am a fine one for not writing sooner but as usual
I am very busy doning nothing. Say listen please be careful what you write in my letters
you see I let my mother read all them. You asked when Theresa's and my birthdays are.
Well mine is ine August and theresa's is in March oh thats right you wanted the date eh?
I am August 6th and Theresa's is the 15th of March. Well how are you getting along with
the cows? I hope you have not been kicked by any lately, have you? We go to the Victoria every Sunday and they have peachy shows there, you know they have regular plays. Last week
we saw "Bought and Paid For", and this week we saw "The Unkissed Bride" and now we are going
to see "The Woman He Married", I hope thats as good as the other ones. Thank you very much
for the pictures they certainly are good, of you especially. What is Santa Clause going to
bring you for Xmas. I hope he is real good to you. Gee I want a knew coat, dress, gloves,
and a million other different things. One thing I want real badly is a Banjo Uke, do you
like them? Iacan play them dandy. How is Tom, your mother, father, and Elmer?? I think
that Theresa must be peeved at me I called her last and she never comes over to my house
any more. I am at work now and it is almost time to go home so I tho't I would take time
to write to you. We don't go to nite school much any more, all we do is go to the shows.
How about yourself? I suppose you enjoy milking the cows for a pasttime eh? I don't see
how you live out there it is so lonesome. Well I guess I will close now as I want to get
home early. Don't forget what I told you about Nice letters because my mother does not
liki the kind you sent me before.

Your friend,
K. Shirley Clary.
3818 N. Ashland Ave.

I included all the misspelling, I hope you don't mind.
I wanted to know about the plays she saw but I could not find them. The only one I did find was "The Unkissed Bride" but it was a film from 1966. So I don't think it was the same one. But it could have been based on the same thing but with a different kind of twist to it.

I also checked out a Banjo Uke. Here is a picture of it.

Well I picked a picture that looked old and would fit the theme of this letter.
I wouldn't mind finding one and learning how to play it if I could.
This letter looks like it's the start of a falling out between Kathryn and Theresa. So stay tuned and find out more details in letters to come.

I wasn't going to post a picture from the scrap book but with all that snow out there I just had to.

Huge Snowslide Halts all Travel in Utah
A snowslide nearly 50 feet deep and 2000 feet wide blocked Provo canyon near Provo, Utah.
it covered a highway, railroad tracks and a river. The slide resulted when rains loosened snow
on the steep slopes of the Wasatch mountains. The river cut a new channel for itself, but travel
through the canyon was bottled.

I'm also including an old picture postcard of some local loggers. Taken about 1916.

I'm not sure right now who Joe Johnson was. I'm sure he was some relation, maybe.

Well that's about it for now.
I'll write soon.

Sandy

Kathryn Clary; Oct. 23, 1919, Chicago

Dear Friends,
How are you? Me, still suffering from cabin fever. I know I made a mistake last time when I didn't do the research on a couple of things so I'll do it now.
One thing was about the place they worked at P.F. Collier &Sons. I found out it was established in 1875. It was a publisher of good books. It ceased  publication Jan. 4 1957 but, it was revived Feb. 2012. So if your interested in what they have to offer now you can now check it out.
The second thing was the word Nasimova. I found out it was the name of a Russian born actress named Alla Nasimova.

1879-1945
She was a silent film star. She also performed on stage. Kathryn mentioned The Brat. I was not sure what this was because of the way she mentioned it. But it was a film that Alla Nasimova stared in.
I think that was about it. So I will now move on to the next letter. Well it's kind of two in one. Confused? Well here they are, you decide.
This is the first one that was in the envelope. Here is what is says, in case it's hard to read.

Dear Friend:
Why don't you answer my Last Letter?
I wrote to you and asked you for some more
Pictures, if you will please send me about
six more of each of us and especially of the
ones of Theresa and I in the hay and on the
pump, will you? I hope your mother and all the rest are
well, and of course yourself. Excuse the mistakes as
I am suppose to be working now and have not much time.
Don't forget to send the pictures will you??
I guess I will close now as it is time
to go home almost.
Your friend,
K. Shirley Clary.
P.S. Will write a longer one soon.
Well that's the first one. She still wants more pictures. Which I have already shared with you the ones she is talking about.

Now on to the next letter:

As you can see it is a longer one that is hand written. Here is what it says.

Dear Friend,
I know you think I'm a
peach for not writing sooner but
I'm so busy going to nite school
and working that I don't get two
minutes to myself. Well to
begin with 'how are you? I'm
fine. The pictures you sent me
were dandy. You can send some
more of those in the hay and
Theresa & I on the pump. Thanks
ever so much for the gum
it certainly tasted peachy only
it wasn't peachy it was
California fruit: ha! ha!
What are the latest shows
out there? The Miracle Man
is one of the latest out here.
We go to a dance at school

every Thursday nite. Do you
go to many? No I'm not
feeling for Elmer in the
least so you can put
that in your pipe and
smoke it. My friend and
Theresa & myself are going
to see a play that's just
out ( you know vaudeville)
the name of it is Scandal
it's a Comedy. Well don't for-
get to ans. & send the pictures.

Your friend
K. Shirley Clary.

Well that's it. I have looked up The Miracle Man. It was silent film which is about a group of con men who find a way to con people out of money by convincing people that one of them can heal people. It sounds like it could be very interesting. There is also a love story included.

The play Scandal. I tried to find out something about it but I wasn't able to narrow it down to one thing. Maybe you can figure out which one she could have seen.

Well sense we are still having snow problems, here another picture for the scrap book.
Washington county- where human shovelers have to precede the snow plow so it won't get stuck. highway 41 was practically cleared when this picture was taken a mile south of Richfield Wednesday afternoon but Thursday it was snowing again.

Boy does this sound familiar. We are suppose to get more snow this coming Thursday.
Here's one more picture.
Despite some more clement weather, these drifts near Grafton still seem pretty high, especially when compared to the height of the trio of girls shown in the picture. Left to right Helen Rushing, Jean Hackett and Margaret Bershta. G.A. Marquardt of Milwaukee took the picture.

Well that's all I have to offer for now.
I how to write soon.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Kathryn Clary; Oct. 9, 1919, Chicago plus Valentines treats for you

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm doing as well as can be expected suffering from cabin fever. The next letter is from Kathryn. It is typed but I'm not sure if it's because of time or if it was just a bad typewriter at that time it's a little faded. So here it is.
In case it is hard to read here is what it says:

Dear Friend,
I suppose you think I am a fine one for
not writing sooner but you see I am working now
and go to nite school too, so you see my time is
is all taken up. Theresa and I both work in the
same place. Down at nite school they have dances
every Thursday nite and we have a picnic. Do---
You have many dances out there? It's lunch time---
now but I got thru rather early today so I thot-
I would write a few lines. How is your mother
Tom and all the rest? I hope they are all well.
Oh yes and how are you? Still milking cows? Do-
you enjoy it as much as ever? Some time I will
send you a few films and have you develope them
for me. Will you? Are they having any good shows
up there? There having Nasimova here in The Brat
and I want to see it. Be sure and answer this as
soon as possible please? Tell Elmer to write too.
Say dont forget to send some more pictures will
you? Theresa received your letter yesterday and I
think she will answer soon, any how I will make
her, of course not saying how soon I answered eh?
Well there is another girl that wants to
write a letter so I suppose I will have to quit
now. Well dont forget to answer this real soon do
you understand?

                                  Your friend,
                                          Kathryn Clary.
                                   3818 N. Ashland Ave.
                                       Chicago Ill.

I copied it just the way it was typed, misspelling and all. I just wonder what Nasimova is? Oh well just another thing I have to look up when I get a chance. Along with seeing if the publisher P.F. Collier & Son is still in business.
Here is another picture of I think is Kathryn and Theresa.

Now here are a few old valentines.

On the back of this one it says:  From an old friend H.B. I might be one of the women but I'm not sure right now. It was post marked Feb 12, 1934 Evanston Ill. Now that I think about it, there was one from Evanston that wrote to him.

An unused one.

It says:
How are you. I am fine. Hoping to see you soon.
I am feeling fine. Would you like to be called down.
As it says on the other side of this card.
Guess who it is from
Goodbye
The post mark is May 17 1921 Medford Wis.
(I guess I should have looked at the post mark before I posted it.)

Now a couple of other things I thought would give a chuckle. This one was post marked Mar 1, 1928, St. Paul Minn

This is an ad I think for a book that could help your love life. I got a kick out of the question it could answer.

This next thing is for a writing club to help you find a good woman. I got a kick out of some of the chooses. They may not have had the internet back then but this was their way of finding the one for you.

Well that's about all for now. I hope you all have a good Valentines Day.
Till next time.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert, Oct 6, 1919 Chicago plus more Winter pictures

Dear Friends,
How are you doing in this winter to remember? Me? Bad case of cabin fever.
Any way here is the next letter from Theresa. It's a longer one then the last few, but it has lots of information.

In case it's hard to read here is what it says:

Dear Howard:
I am answering your letter wich
I received several days ago. Just as usual,
Chicago is still as exciting as ever. It is pretty
cold out here, how is the weather out there?
Will you please make or send me a few
of those pictures we had taken on the small
pile of hay that time. You know where
Kathryn, my two sisters, my brother and
myself are laying on a hay pile? Well
about three will be enough. I lost all of
those that I had. I have been going to dances
every Thursday night and am having a swell
time but I wish I was in Hayward. The city
is all right but nothing like a small town
for me. How about it? Did I ever tell you about
the man who tortured a little girl and then

buried her half alive in her own basement in
a coal pile. They looked for the girl four
days and he knew it all the time. I don't
see how he could stand it. Well he is going
to hang at sunrise to-morrow. I imagine it is
awful. Another murder was committed Sunday
morning in the loop. A man killed two men
with an iron bar. The police have not found
him yet but I guess they will. Because two
or three men saw him before he killed the
men. Nobody knows why he killed those
men or anything. Say listen can you
make those pictures of me any brighter? But
I suppose it is to much trouble. I am
working in this office and so is Kathryn. We
are doing office work. We have a lot of
fun with one man. He is Irish and full of
develment. By the way we are going to
have a halloween party in one girls basement &
we are going to decorate it all up. Write soon
and tell me about your Halloween party.
Well so long for this
time.
T. Billy Lambert

Here is the picture they both seam to like. Maybe it's because they are all smiling.
She had a lot of information in this one. I wonder if the person she mentioned killing the young girl is the same one she mentioned in the other letter about the race riots? If it is, that was swift punishment. A whole lot faster then they do now a days.
Plus she has her first job working in an office. I wonder if this place is still in business? She sounds like she is really enjoying herself. I wonder how her Halloween party went? I also wonder what kind of party Grandpa went to that year?

Well with winter being so hard on so many I've found a couple of pictures that could almost have happened today.
The one on the left says:
Ranger Edward Jones is shown rescuing a deer stuck in the snow at Bear mountain park, New York.
The one on the right says;
The deer were so cold they welcomed companionship one day  recently when Dr. William J. Hanley formerly of Milwaukee and captain at a CCC camp at Gwinn. Mich., approached this pair.

If this garage at 1947 N Thirty- fourth st. could just have held out a little longer some of the snow might have run off in the form of water. The roof gave up, or rather gave in at 2:50 p.m. Sunday. It belongs to Edward Wolke.
Snow on the roof of this garage at 1945 N. Twenty-eight st. owned by Walter Voelz, caused the roof to collapse. Three cars were inside.

I put these pictures put there because my husband said that he saw three sheds that have collapsed roofs from too much snow between our place and town. Now we don't live that far from town so that is a lot of damage in a short distance.

Well that's all I have time for now so I will close.
Till next time.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert: Chicago, Sept. 25, 1919 Plus other pictures

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm starting to get a bad case of cabin fever. This winter is starting go on a little longer then most people around here can take. I'm tired of all the below zero temps everyday. Hopefully this next week it will be above zero and stay there.
Any way enough whining, here is the next letter from Theresa.

In case it's hard to read here is what it says.

Dear Friend,
I do not know wither I wrote to you since
I have been in Chic. or not. I have been
having a fine time and wish you the same.
How is your sick cow. Our chickens are getting
along nicely. I am not going to go tonight to school
any more. I am going to start to work. As soon as
you have developed those pictures please
send them to me.
Well this is all I will write today.
Your Friend
Theresa

Well it looks like at that time Theresa was still worried about one of Grandpa's cows. I wonder what made her decide not to go to school anymore and to start work instead?
Here is another picture I think is of Theresa and her siblings.

I think I have at least two of this one picture.

Looking through the scrap book I found a picture that caught my eye and decided to share it with you.
This is what it says:
With an accompanying roar that aroused the neighborhood,
the steel walls of a 170-foot water tank at S. Seventieth st.
and W. Greenfield av. "buckled in" early Sunday as the tank was
being drained. The tank, of 100,000-gallon capacity, is owned by
the Allis Chalmers Co. Although it is stream heated, the recent
cold had frozen the water at the top, necessitating draining.
William Watson, general works manager, said that a vacuum
created by the emptying, caused the buckling. Workmen are
shown beginning repairs.

I thought that with people in some towns being told to keep their water running because of the cold this picture would prove it has happened in a different way before.

Here is also another of the unknown pictures I have. This one I think just might be from the 1890's, maybe, from Sweden.

Once again if anyone knows anyone from any of the pictures I post do not be afraid to let me know.

Well that's all for today.
Till next time.
Your Friend,
Sandy

Theresa Lambert: Sept. 19, 1919, Chicago plus other pictures.

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm doing okay. I've got a little scratchy throat, but still fine.
That next letter is once again from Theresa. She is now back in Chicago.
So here it is.

In case it's hard for you to read here is what is says:

Dear Friend,
We arrived in Chicago safely Tuesday evening.
I no sooner got cleaned up and went out to a girl friends
house when I was greatly surprised. All the boys and girls got together
and made a surprise party on me. We had a good time.
How did the pictures turn out. Rotten I sup-

pose. But after you have them developed send me some any way.
How is your sick cow getting along?
I hope you didn't kill her. Gee that's awful.
Well I am glad I am off of the farm any way.
Send the best regards to your mother and father
from my mother. Well I guess I will close.
Hoping you will send the pictures.
Your Friend
Theresa

Here is another of the pictures I think is of Kathryn, Theresa and her sisters and bother.

I'm still not sure who is who but maybe some day someone will be able to tell me.

I was looking through some of the pictures and finally decided it was time to start putting some of them out there.
The first one is of my grandpa and his brother Thomas.

Grandpa is the one standing. I did know Uncle Thomas. He never married. He died in 1970. So I was about 8 years old. I'm not sure how old they were in this picture but, they look to be in their teens.

This next picture is I think of a logging camp. I'm not sure where. I'm thinking maybe from up Ogema way.

This next picture is just one of many that I have no idea who it is.

The picture was taken in Appleton, Wis. If you know this woman I would like to know more about her.

This next article I found with some other articles. I thought it was interesting and with all the trouble with things now a days this might get people thinking.

Click on it to read what this old farmer had to say about things at the time.

Well that's all I have time for now.
With my regards to all,
Your Friend,
Sandy
