Nellie Currier: June 9, 1928 Manchester, N.H.

Dear Friends,
It's almost hard to believe that it is the end of September all ready. Summer is gone and Fall has begun. Before you know it ,it will be winter and Christmas time. I'don't know if I'm ready for what is to come. But what choice do I have.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Nellie:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                   485 Lake Shore Rd.
                    Manchester
                                 N.H.
Dear Howard:
    Got your surpris-
ing letter today and
as I just returned from
the city I will answer
it. We are having some
peachie weather and
we are all well and
happy and hope you
are the same. Well, Howard
Hazel has left me

         2
she went home last
Wednesday the 6th of
June. I am all alone
here now and have
to do most all the work
and what I don't do my
brothers and father do
for me. Why don' you
ask that "far away girl"
for a picture of herself
maybe she is more
of a satisfaction to you

          3
than I would be. Ha, Ha.
I am not used to
sleeping with anyone
as I sleep alone also.
Aren't you warm when
you sleep alone, Howard?
I sleep alone and sure
am warm enough some
of the bed-clothes off. I
also hope you don't have
to sell your farm. I haven't
been doing anything

        4
only I went down town
to see my mother as
she was here in the
city on a nursing case
and when I got down
there she took me down
to a big sale and spent
$25 dollars on me. She
sure is a good mother
I think. I am glad
that you like my jokes
as I thot you would

            5
be getting mad at me
for sending you such
terrible jokes. I will try
and think of another
one to write to you before
I finish this letter to you.
I will write to Hazel
and let her know that
"Tomy" wants to hear from
her. I will have to
ring off now and hope
to hear from you again

          6.
before long.
        from
          Nellie
Lots of Love & Kisses.
 Try and guess these.
1. Why does a hen lay
an egg?
2. What is the difference
between a woman
and a soldier?
3. When does water stop

          7.
running down hill?
best of luck to you
            Bye-Bye.

I wonder where Hazel went home to?
I'll always wonder what kind of letter he wrote to these women.
I wonder if he could have been referring to her as "the far away girl" and maybe she was just playing a game with him.
I wonder what kind of things her mother bought for her that came to $25.
I could guess what the answers to her little questions but I'm afraid I'll guess wrong.
Maybe you can answer them for me. I challenge you to give me your answers.

Here are two more viewer cards from the "Scenes From New York" set:

Castle Garden, now the Aquarium with a very interesting foreground.
  The Pier of Castle Garden.

In the first picture I wonder who is in the carriage. Someone famous. I've looked at it thought the viewer but I do not know who it could be. maybe you can figure it out.

Now both picture have to do with Castle Garden.
This is a definition from Wikipedia:
Castle Clinton or Fort Clinton, once known as Castle Garden, is a circular sandstone fort now located in Battery Park, in ManhattanNew York City. It is perhaps best remembered as America's first immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the U.S. from 1855 to 1890. Over its active life, it has also functioned as a beer gardenexhibition halltheaterpublic aquarium, and finally today as a national monument.

This is a view from above to give you idea what it looks like.
Maybe someday I'll see some of these things I'm showing you in person.

Here is a random picture for you to look at:

This was taken while Grandpa was putting on addition on the front of the house. The date is Sept. 1957.

Well, that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you a very good weekend.
Don't forget to stop by again soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Mary Mattingly: June 7, 1928 Springfield Ky.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good as usual, no drama for me anyway. So I guess I'll get to the letter right away.
It is a very hard letter to read. The writing is very faded or Mary did not write it very dark. So here it is:

As always, for those that find it hard to read here it is:

                Willisberg Ky.
                June 3 1928
Dear Friend Howard I take
the pleasure in answering your
letter I got the other day
was glad to hear from you
I have been so busy I hadn't
had time to answer it is raining
here now I guess I will have to
sit after tomorrow I guess
you don't raise any tobacco
We raise corn and tobacco wheat
oats in garden I don't like
tobacco much Maybe I will
have a picture to send

           2
you in my next letter I guess
you are going to get it
I had some taken but they
wasn't good no I haven't any
car I am working for one but
I haven't got it me I don't
but close to the motion
it is awful don't hear this spring
But there is right small size
litter akkler hear them to
any time to get lonesome
with any of is me  I don't
Guess so I will close it
is getting late looking to hear
from you from Mary Mattingly

I know I got a lot of the words wrong, so I want to say I'm sorry. Between the bad spelling and light writing it was very hard to figure out what she was trying to say.
I don't know if she really meant tobacco or not but it kind of made sense. Maybe someone else will be able to figure it out better then I did.
The post mark was Springfield Ky.

Anyway, here are two more cards from "The scenes from New York " set:

The Famous Bowery as it is today.

 Market under East River Bridge.

Like I've told you I know nothing about New York at all.
I looked up the famous Bowery because I wanted to know what it looks like today.
I think this is an image of maybe the same area:
Bowery, looking north from Houston Street.jpg

I got the image from Wikipedia.
I'd say, boy has it changed.

As for the scene of the market under the East River Bridge, I don't think it looks anything like the one in the old viewer.

Image result for market under east river bridge

I'm not sure if this a picture that could have been taken in the same area or not. I don't think they have the kind of markets today as they use to.

Here is a random picture for you to look at.

I'm not sure if I have shown you this one before or not. I do not have any idea who this is or when it was taken.

Well, that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Sandy

Helen Balusik: June 3, 1928 Evanston, Ill.

Dear Friends,
If you live in Wisconsin, it's been a very wet week. If this keep happening this winter, we will be buried. Oh well what can you do.
Here is the next letter from Helen:

As always, for those who find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                      Evanston, Ill.
                         June 3-28
Dear Howard:
  Received yours here some
time ago and so will
take the pleasure of answering
it this afternoon seeing I
am off of duty until six o'clock
then I have to go back &
work an hour & then I
am free for the evening.
My, it sure is grand
here lately- the weather
couldn't be any nicer not
too hot or too cold. I think
June is such pretty month
don't you?
  Well, did you have to
work Decoration Day? We
were all off for the day & so
some of us went to a
amusement part where
they have so many exciting
rides and different things
going on. Sure had a good
time- But the next day
felt so tired & sleepy-
So after all you feel better

when you work right along
instead of getting a holiday.
In the morning the band
played here in the park
only about half a block
away. Then they Marched to
the cemetery.
Well Anna & Frank Novy
are leaving for home
this month with their car.
I could have planned to go
with them but I think I'm
staying awhile longer.
But I sure am anxious to
get back home again it
seems such a long time
ago since I left- Well it is
almost ten months.
I'm surprised you liked
my pictures- I didn't think
they were so good- But I
wish you wouldn't keep
it by the "American beauties because
there's no comparison to between
the two - I'll have to give you
a black eye for that some
time (Ha Ha).
My sister & brother go fishing

             2
quite a bit at home. They sure
make me jealous when
they speak of going fishing &
pulling the trout out. I suppose
when I get there fishing will
be all over with.
  Last Sunday a girl friend
of mine & myself we went
to the park took some
pictures ( but didn't turn out good)
then we watched the motor
boats they have several on
the lake for the purpose of
taking whoever wants a
ride for certain price. I was
wishing her & I could have gone
but she wasn't brave
enough to go I guess. Maybe
I would have been afraid
after I would have gone.
Everybody seems to be
taking naps this afternoon
so quiet everywhere could
hear a mouse go by if she did.
Well Howard, I think I
shall sign off for this time

not make you tired reading
this junk.
Won't be long & I will be
pulling through Ogema
wish you lived near
the tracks so I could wave
to you when I go by-
Hoping to get another of
your nice letters you sure
can write interesting.
   Well bye bye
           Sincerely  Helen

I wonder what pictures she sent to him. They were not with this letter. Maybe I have already shown them to you.
I wonder when she finally go home to Phillips? Maybe soon.
I wonder if she was able to go fishing when she got home.
It sounds like she enjoyed Decoration Day.
I wonder what kind of ride they had at the amusement park.
I wonder how fast the motor boats went back then.
So many questions that may never get answered. Well, I suppose if I really had the time I could research some of these things on the internet.
I do plan on putting all these letters together in a better way someday. Including a little research on somethings. I hope that some day I will be able to put them together in book form and share it with who ever is interested.

Anyway, here are two more viewer cards from the "Scene's From New York" set:

 Steamship Docks above Brooklyn Bridge.
Wall Street and Trinity Church.

The first card is very popular. I looked it up and found a number of different places you can even buy it. It might cost you around $7.99 or less that I found. I was trying to find a similar angle but since I don't know anything about New York I decide not to try and find a modern view of the same angle.

As for the second picture, here what it looks like today:
Image result for Wall street and trinity church

It looks like it has not changed much over the years.

Here is a random picture for you to look at:

Clement (my dad) teaching Patty (my mom) how to drive tractor
Summer 1959

I don't think mom ever got the hang of driving a tractor.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good weekend.
And don't forget to drop by for more Fading History.
Till then.

Sandy

Sigrid Niemela: June 1, 1928 Mt. Iron, Minn.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was half busy. On Saturday we went to a Badger Football game. I've never been to one before so this was new for me. It was a close game, closer then they thought it was going to be. So now I can say I have attended a collage football game.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Sigrid:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                   Mt. Iron, Minn.
                     June 1, 1928
Dear Howard,
 It's about time I'm
answering your letter
isn't it? Probably you've
forgotten me by this
time. Gosh, my writing
come awful, I have
such a short pencil,
and + a poor hand
at the penmanship art.
If you just understand
it, it's alright.
I wish I was there
to play those records,
I never get enough of
music I guess. We
haven't anything musi-
cal only me, & one

could never call me
musical, ye gods!!
Some start for June
we have. So lonesome
cold & dreary & rainy.
I bet we can't even
go swimming if it keeps
being so cold. Are
there nice lakes around
Ogema? I read some
news in the Finnish
paper from Ogema,
but I didn't get head
or tails to it because
I don't know the
people there. Can you
talk any Finn? Just
about everyone can
say some words in
that language.

          2.
Have you been fixing
your house at all now?
I bet it will be
nice someday. Why
didn't you leave more
trees around it though?
It would be so nice
then, and cool too.
I've always wished for
a nice house, but my
wish hasn't been
granted as yet. Do
you sell cream or
what do you do with
so many cows? I don't
even know how to
milk, I'm so rotten.
  Nearly eleven o'clock

now but I'm not sleepy.
We have such a beaut-
iful moon tonight, I'd
just like to stay out-
doors but it's rather
cool & no fun alone.
I'm always alone I'm
so sick & tired of it
that I could do any-
thing to relieve myself
for awhile. Anybody
would get lonesome
& sore too, in a place
like this. Wait, when
I get out of here though!!!
I've got to pour my
troubles into someone's ears
so don't mind if you
get "kinda" funny letters
sometimes Howard.
                     Only
                      me. (Sigrid)
Ans.
soon, even
if I
didn't,
please.

I wonder what kind of records Grandpa had and which was his favorite?
I wonder how many cows he was milking at that time?
Boy she really wants to move away from where she lived. Was she ever able to move away and find her true love? Or someone she could be happy with.
I wonder what Grandpa thought about her kind of venting about being lonely in northern Minn.
I wonder if Grandpa could speak Finnish?

here are two more viewer cards from the "Scenes from New York" set:

The World Building and City Hall.
Flat Iron Building and View of Fifth Avenue.

The world building was built in 1890 for the defunct newspaper The New York World. It was razed in 1955.
City hall was built in 1811. it's still there and I think looks about the same.

The Flatiron Building was built in 1902.

Image result for flatiron building

Looks the same except for the other buildings around it.

Here is a random picture for you to look at:

Just a picture of some of the young stock from a time gone by.

I think I had promised you a picture of some goats on the roof of a restaurant in door county.

The restaurant is a Swedish one. We did eat there. I'd say if you find yourself in Sister Bay, give it a try. You can't miss it. It's the only one that has grass and goats on it's roof.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Nellie Currier: June 1, 1928 Manchester, N.H.

Dear Friends,
Another week has gone by. It was a nice week for me. I was on vacation again this week. I did a few things but mainly stayed around home. The husband was making hay. Boy this is a very choppy start for this post.
Oh well, here is the next letter from Nellie:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                  485 lake Shore Road,
                    Manchester N.H.
                         6/1/28
Dear Howard:-
   I got your letter
yesterday and was a usual
very glad to hear from you.
I would of answered your
welcome letter yesterday
only I was away and had $20
spent on me. We are having
some very nice weather
over here in Manchester &
hope we keep on having
some weather like this.
I am well and hope you

            2.
are the same. How is the
weather out there now, Howard?
I am glad you liked
my joke and will try
and think of another
one to send you. No I
don't think I have ever
heard or read that joke
of "Frank's one tube Radio,"
I know quite a few but
never heard that one. Did
you fire your cook or did
she get out herself? Are you
going to sell your farm

               3.
and go and live with that
young girl far away? Where
does she live? Now don't
you wish I was out there
to get your dinner for
you Howard? Ha, Ha. But I
think maybe you wish
you were over to that other
girl's place. Maybe she
is much better for
you than I am Howard.
Well Howard I think
I can hear the mail-
man coming so I will

           4.
have to ring off
   From a friend
         Nellie
P.S. Did "Tomy" get Hazel's
aunts picture taken
with Willis? She told "Tomy"
that it was her but it
was her aunt. Maybe
that far away "girl would
make a better bed partner
for you than I could. Ha, Ha.
A Raffle for A Dog (Lets see you smile.)
Little brown dog sound as a ring
Will be ten years old if he lives till spring.
He'll sh-- on your carpet, piss on your grass
He has three white feet and a hole in his a--
His head bulges out, and his a-- caves in;
But he's a dam good dog; for the shape he's in.
                                                 Ha, Ha.

The roads were so wet,
good the lanes were
so narrow,
I had to bring her home
In an old Wheelbarrow.

After reading this letter I wonder what he was telling her about the other girls who were writing to him. Or was he making her believe he would move out there to be with her if only. It's times like this I really wish I could have seen what he wrote to them.
I wonder who was cooking Grandpa's meals at that time since his mother past away.
I like her jokes.

Here are two more viewer cards from the "Scenes from New York" set:

 The Postoffice.
A View of Famous Broadway.

I looked up some info on this post office.
This building was built between 1869 and 1880. It was often called "Mullet's Monstrosity". That was the name of the man who finished it in the end. it was demolished in 193. The site was used to extend City Hall Park to the south.

As for the second picture, here is what we know it looks like today:

Image result for broadway new york
I've never been to New York, but I think this might be the same angle that was taken back in the day.

Now for a random picture:

I thought since she told a dog joke I would show you a picture of one of the dogs that they had over the years. I don't think this is one from when I was little. The dog they had when I was young was a collie named Lassie.

Well, that's about all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a very good weekend.
I hope you will drop by again soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Helen Balusik: May 25, 1928 Evanston Ill.

Dear Friends,
Another weekend gone. I hope you had a good one. Mine was good. No drama for me.
The reason I was late last time was that the husband and I had gone a little two day trip to Door county. We had not been there in over 15 years. Boy has that place changed. There is a lot to see. I like the goats on top of a restaurant. Maybe I'll share the picture at the end of this post.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Helen:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                Thursday evening
Dearest Howard:
  Received your nice
letter the other day & sure
am pleased to get
them you can be sure!
Well how is Howard,
anyhow, now I hope
you are not working
too hard. I sure am
kept busy these spring
days. We usually have
twenty-five people in
for supper every nite
so you see that means
work.
We had a nice shower
this evening I was

            2
invited to a party but
it scared me out so I
stayed at home writing
good idea eh?
I suppose you are
dreaming by this time
for its after ten all
ready.
My, but isn't spring
going by fast - soon
is June again the
month of Roses, oh
boy isn't it grand to
be alive sometimes
I mean always.
Won't be long & I will
have to be packing
up for home sweet

             3
home again. Don't the
years roll by fast after
you get to be over twenty
why a year seems like
a month.
Well next week is
decoration Day. Do you
celebrate? We get off
that day so we sure
are going to celebrate,
because a holiday doesn't
come very often. They
are suppose to have
a big parade here
so I must go & see
that if nothing else.
Last year I was home
for Decoration Day - my

              4
brother & I had a good
old time riding around
in his roadster- Then
he picked up his girl
& the three of us went
for a long drive. We
could have drove to
Ogema - (ha Ha) eh
Howard- if I would
have known you are
there - we wouldn't
have missed it.
We girls have bunches
of lilacs up here in
our room my, if they
don't smell grand, I'll
tell the world. I do
love them anyhow, don't you?

              5
            continued
I believe I am on
the last sheet of my
paper so I see where
I have to get more
if I want to write
any more letters, Don't
you think? so?
  well Howard, are you
planting your garden
yet? Hows the straw-
berries have any short
cakes by now? We
have short cakes here
very often oh, and does
it tastes good with a
lot of berries on it
don't you like em??
  I guess I will have

to say good nite & go
to bed-
Hoping you are a good
boy always.
Write soon.
     I remain
          As Ever
             Your Pal
              Helen x
P.S.
Please excuse
my scratching &
mistakes, won't you?
And how do you like
the snaps? Burn
them up if you don't
want them-

I wonder what kind of restaurant she worked in that didn't have many people for supper. Or maybe that was a lot at that time. Maybe it was a very formal place that served seven course meals. Those kind of meals take a long to to get through, or so I hear. I've never had a chance to experience that kind of supper. Maybe some day.
I hope everyone had a good Decoration Day and that the weather was  just right for the parade.
I wonder what her brothers roadster looked like?
Maybe something like this one:
 Image result for 1926 roadster

I wonder what kind of snaps she sent him. Did he like them or did he burn them? The world will never know.

Here are two cards from a new set of Viewer cards. I'm calling this set, Scenes from New York:

The Broadway Squad, New York's Mounted Police.
A Detail of New York's Finest Going on Duty.

I'm not sure what year this is from. Whenever I can I might try to find pictures of the same area so I can compare the changes that have happened.

Here is a random picture for you to look at:

On the back someone wrote: Manhattan Island taken
                                              from ferry on the way
                                               to the Statue of Liberty

I thought with the theme of Decoration Day and New York, this was a good fit to put here. it was taken during someones senior class trip.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Sandy
