La Grange Ill.: Sept. 10, 1929

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. We visited with out Granddaughter on Saturday. It is always a good day when you can spend it with your grand babies. On Sunday the husband and I hiked 15.8 miles. Longer then we intended to do. On the way back to the truck it started raining. There was a little hail at first then it poured. Luckily we had rain ponchos with us but we still got wet. I know the next hike will not be that long. We learn our lesson.
Anyway, here is what was in the next envelope. I think it might have been from Mabel Elmblade.

I'm not going to type this up.
I wonder it this pamphlet is still used today. Reading it, it could apply to views of today.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

 A water main broke late Tuesday at N. Thirty-eighth st. and W. Auer av. and a pre-season flood
came early to the district. The street was flooded and a member of the crew summoned to dig
trenches to drain the water is shown above, midst the snowbanks and one of the rivulets.

I wonder how long it took to fix the water main back then.

Mabel Elmblade: Dec. 12, 1928 La Grange Ill.

Dear Friends,
Well Spring has finally sprung. Or has it? There is no snow on the ground here right now, so I guess that is one sign spring could be starting. I'm so looking forward to it getting warmer and things to green up. Then I can start my next new adventure. Hiking the Ice Age Trail.Well right now it will be only done on weekends, weather permitting of course.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Mabel:

Not a whole lot here. It is getting close to Christmas.
I wonder what kind of job she was able to get if one at all.

All I can say is that must have been a very crowded place to grow up. I wonder how big the addition was?

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine involved a little much snow, cold temps and dealing with the end of a kind of sinus pressure. But I survived. So if you survived, pat yourself on the back.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Mabel:

Now We sing: Snow-ful Off to Buffalo

For the second time in a week Buffalo, N.Y., was crippled by a heavy snowfall over the week-end
as this picture indicates. Last Tuesday 19 1/2  inches fell and on Saturday almost 10 more inches
blanketed the city.

I just thought you enjoy seeing a snow fall from the past.

I hope everyone had a good weekend and didn't have to many problems with snow like we did around here. We got about 7 inches this weekend. Now it will be getting very cold. Below zero. Not looking forward to that.

 I was hoping there was a copyright date but there was none.

It always make me giggle a little when someone says Howard is such a pretty name.
She was doing her best to become Grandpa's number one. I always wonder what was going through his mind when he read a letter like this one.

That must have been the worst thing to do back then. Burning bodies. I suppose they had to do it that way because of the number of people that were killed at once.That is something I don't see being done today, do you?

Mabel Elmblade: Aug. 6, 1928 La Grange Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine, was four days long. I had Friday and Monday off. The reason is it was my wedding anniversary. I've been married for 34 years.Who'd have thunk it. The weather is finally matching the time of year. There is finally snow on the ground that I think is here to stay for awhile. Along with the cold temps.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Mabel:

I wonder what kind of picture he sent to her that she fell in love with him. So at least was trying to convince herself that she was. She wanted to marry a good Christian boy. I hope she was able to find the one that was best for her.

The next set of viewer cards are of an earthquake that happen in Jamaica in 1907.
It happened on Monday Jan 14, 1907 about 3:30 pm local time. At that time it was considered one of the deadliest. About 800 to 1000 people died. A tsunami followed with maximum waves of 6 to 8 feet.
A passenger ship, The Port Kingston, was used as a make shift hospital.

I'm not sure I ever heard about this quake or not. I wonder where this quake is ranked to this date as a disaster.
This is one set that I wish it was colored so that some things would pop out even more.

The date at the bottom says it was developed May '58. Not sure who they all are or why they look like they are all trying to get to the car as fast as they can. Maybe someone will tell me what could have been going on. Or maybe not.

I hope everyone had a very nice weekend. Mine was a little short, kind of. I also had Monday off. So I guess I still had a two day weekend. What did I do with my Monday, I did some baking. Corn bread and some cup cakes. I don't do this very often so I have to make it last.

I'm a little confused on the question she was answering. Maybe in the future it will be better explained.
The weather was nice and she she enjoyed the beach.

Remember this is from 1906.....

This is the beginning of the construction of the Panama canal.
Remember this is from 1906. So please do not get offended because of the wording in the second card. It was a different time. It is a part of history. Not a good part, but it still was common back then. Someday I hope that this word will be a word with nothing attached it. Just an old word that has faded away.
