Little One Eye, Little Two Eyes and Little Little Three Eyes: Part II

Dear Friends,
How are you? I'm good. I had a very good week. No dramas. No trouble. Just the way I like it.
Anyway, here is chapter two of "Little One Eye, Little Two Eyes, and Little Three Eyes:

              II.
        The Tree

The next day, the mother said to Little
Three Eyes:-
"This time you must go with Little Two
Eyes, and see if any one brings her food and
drink." Then Little Three Eyes said to Little
Two Eyes:-
"I will go with you into the field, and see
that the goat is well taken care of, and feeds in
the best pasture." But Little Two Eyes saw
what Little Three Eyes had in her mind. So
she drove the goat into the long grass, and
said:-
"Come, Little Three Eyes, we will sit down,
and I will sing to you." Little Three Eyes
sat down; she was tired after her long walk
in the hot sun, and Little Two Eyes began
to sing, as before:-
"Are you awake, Little Three Eyes?" but
instead of going on,-

"Are you asleep, Little Three Eyes?" she
did not think, and sang:--
"Are you asleep, Little Two Eyes?" and
went on:--
"Are you awake, Little Three Eyes? Are
you asleep, Little Two Eyes? Are you awake?
Are you asleep? Awake? Asleep?" By this
time the two eyes of Little Three Eyes fell asleep,
but the third eye did not go to sleep, for it
was not spoken to by the verse. Little Three
Eyes, to be sure, shut it, and made believe that
it went to sleep. Then she opened it a little
way and watched Little Two Eyes.
When Little Two Eyes thought Little Three
Eyes was fast asleep, she said softly:--
"Little goat, bleat; little table rise;" and
she sat at the table and ate and drank till
she had had enough. Then she said as
before:--
"Little goat, bleat; little table away."
But Little Three Eyes had seen everything.
Little Two Eyes now woke Little Three Eyes,
and said:--
"Little Three Eyes, why do you not watch?
You have been asleep, and the goat could have
run all over the world. Come! let us go home."
So home they went, and Little Two Eyes again
did not touch the dish. Then Little Three
Eyes said to the mother:--

"I know why the proud thing does not eat.
She says to the goat: 'Little goat, bleat;
little table, rise,' and there stands a table
before her. It is covered with the very best of
things to eat, much better than anything we
have. When she has had enough to eat, she
says: 'Little goat, bleat; little table, away,'
and all is gone. I have seen it just as it is.
She put two eyes to sleep with a song,
but the one in my forehead stayed awake."
Then the mother cried out:--
"Shall she be better off than we are?" With
that she took a knife and killed the goat.
Poor Little Two Eyes went to the field, and
sat down and began to cry. All as once the
wise woman stood near her, and asked:--
"Little Two Eyes, why do you cry?" Little
Two Eyes said:--
"Have I not need to cry? My mother has
killed the goat. Now I must suffer hunger and
thirst again." The wise woman said:--
"Little Two Eyes, dry your eyes, and I will
tell you what to do. Beg your sisters to give
you the heart of the goat. Then bury it in
the ground before the door of the house. All
will go well with you." Then the wise woman
was gone, and Little Two Eyes went home and
said to her sisters:--
"Sisters, give me some part of my goat.

I do not ask for anything but the heart."
They laughed, and said:--
"You can have that, if you do not want
anything else." Little Two Eyes took the heart
and buried it in the ground before the door
of the house.
Next morning the sisters woke and saw a
splendid tree in front of the house. It had
leaves of silver and fruit of gold. It was
wonderful to behold; and they could not think
how the tree had come there in the night.
Only Little Two eyes saw that the tree had
grown out of the heart of the goat. Then the
mother said to Little One Eye:--
"Climb up, my child, and pluck some fruit
from the tree." Little One Eye climbed the
tree. She put out her hand to take a golden
apple, but the branch sprang back. This took
place every time. Try as hard as she could,
she could not get a single apple. Then the
mother said:--
"Little Three Eyes, do you climb up. You
can see better with your three eyes than Little
One Eye can." Down came Little One Eye,
and Little Three Eyes climbed the tree. But
it was with her just as it had been with Little
One Eye. She put out her hand, and the
branch sprang back. At last the mother tried,
but it was the same with her. She could not

get a single apple. Then Little Two Eyes
said:--
"Let me try."
"You!" they all cried. "You with your
two eyes like other people! What can you
do?" But Little Two Eyes climbed the tree,
and the branch did not spring back. The
golden apples dropped into her hands, and she
brought down her apron full of them. Her
mother took them away from her, and her two
sisters were angry because they had failed, and
they were more cruel than ever to Little Two
Eyes.

You got to love this family. How will it all end for Little Eyes?
Stay tuned for the final chapter next time and learn what happens.

I'm still getting use to my new computer. Scanning things are a bit different from before. But I am getting the hang of it. So that being said here are a couple of little stories from a couple of different newspapers.

The first one might be from The Milwaukee Journal. The second a local paper.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope everyone has a very good weekend.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Ethel Lundstram: Feb. 8, 1932 Ogema, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone had a good weekend. I know there are a number of places that are not doing well. Mostly on the West coast. Southern California is still on fire and now there has been an Amtrak train derailment in Washington state. As I'm typing this I just heard about it on Monday. They have not said how many people have lost their lives yet. It sounds like it was something that is very horrific.
Anyway, here is a chain letter from Ethel Lundstram;

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

    Good Luck Chain
Please make nine copies and
mail to those whom you wish
to see prosper. Within 29 hours
after you receive this. this
chain was started by an
American Colonel and must
circle the globe 15 times. It
will bring luck in nine days.
So please do not break the
chain. Prof. Mrs. Alphine won
9 millions. Mr. William Hayes
won 6 million. Mr. Frances
broke the chain and lost
all of his possessions. Have
faith your happiness depends
upon it. Recopy eliminating

the first name as mine only
must remain. Mrs. R mcMullins
to Mrs. Berta Bennett. Mrs.
Berta Bennett to Mrs. Elfert
Carter. Mrs. Elfert Carter to
Mrs. Pearl Sanford. Mrs. Pearl
Sanford to Ruth Bennett. Ruth
Bennett to Dora Mann. Dora
Mann to Miss Mary Esser.
Miss Mary Esser to Mrs.
George Gulberger. Mrs. George
Gulberger to Miss Marie Acker.
Miss Marie Acker to Miss
Ethel Lundstram and Miss
Ethel Lundstram to Mr Howard
                                     Johnson.

I wonder how long this chain letter was around. Did Grandpa send the nine letters out?
Would you pass a letter like this on or just toss it out?
If you want to share it with someone maybe I should add my name to it before you pass it on.
Just add. Mr. Howard Johnson to Sandy. Sandy to you.
Go for it.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

Norris dam is completed- thousand attended the dedication ceremonies at Norris, Tenn., and the picture shows the scene as the last sluice gate in this section of the TVA project was closed.- A. P. Wirephoto.

What an exciting time watching the dedication of this dam.
Is this dam still being used today and how much work has it had over the years?

Here are few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

Enjoy.

Finally, a random picture:

No idea where this or when it was taken. I thought that since the scrap book picture had to do with a dam I would show you another one.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good week and don't forget to come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Mamie: April 23, 1930 Ogema, Wis.

Dear friends,
I will say I did have a good weekend. But in other places, not good. I'm still trying to figure out how the horrible shooting happened in Vegas. So many innocent people that lost their lives or where hurt. I hope there is some sort of answer to why. I saw a video Monday morning from someone's phone. What I could not believe was some girl was running by in the background, holding her phone up taking a video of herself running away. For me, that would be the last thing I would do while trying to get away. I do not need that kind of reminder of what happened. I guess I'll never understand that generation based on that kind of ego.
Anyway, here is a letter from Mamie:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what it says:

                        Ogema, Wisconsin
                         April 23, 1930
Mr. Howard Johnson:
     Ogema, Wis.
Dear Sir:-
I am very sorry that you are
angry with me. Nothing hurts me more
than to know that somebody is angry
with me, you can ask Mrs. Swanson
she can tell you.
I suppose I acted strange after
you were so kind to come and get me
but if you knew how I felt Sunday
and the family troubles at my home
I think maybe you'd understand what
condition my nerves were in. I'm sorry
the school year has to end with
hard feelings I know I did not intend
it too.
I am glad you sent in a bill it
makes me feel better because I know
they were both hard trips.
I also am thanking you for the

kindness you have shown me
during the year do not think that I
do not appreciate it. I will return
the books before I leave thanking you
again.
Hoping we all hard feelings may
disappear. S'cuse writing I'm writing on
my lap.         Sincerely
                     Mamie

I wonder what was going on between them then. Was she the girlfriend that has been mentioned by others or just a friend? Were they friends in later years?
Questions that will never be answered. They have faded away never to be known again.

Here is a couple of pictures from the scrap book:

(1st picture)
The cats around the fish shanties have been on a long fast but
this tabby shown feasting upon a bloater tossed her by a fish-
erman. It still looks like lean Lenten season though.

(2nd picture)
Capt. Bill Bearman of the Archie Tegtmeyer, who returned
with one of the largest catches, holds up a five-pound trout.

Smells a little fishy to me..Ha! Ha!

Here are few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs":

Ah school daze..... Enjoy........

And finally a random picture:

If I'm not mistaken, this is my aunt Jeanie. Not sure how old she is here. She recently had a birthday.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will find yourself coming back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Unknown Swedish letter: April 5, 1928 Ogema, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. The weather around here had it's ups and downs. It all depends on where you live. On Saturday there was one very close lightning strike that made me yell a little. We don't think it struck anything. I guess someone was trying to get my attention for some reason.
Anyway, here is the next letter. I do not know who it is from or even sure what it says, exactly. It is in Swedish. I did my best to try to translate it. I'm not going to type it up because a lot of the words I'm not 100% sure I got right. I will tell you that I'm pretty sure it is a chain letter for prosperity. If you know Swedish maybe you can figure it out better then I can.

Good luck trying to figure out the words. I hope you can do I better job then I did.I tried to use Google translator and a Swedish/English dictionary. Between the two things I did get a few words right.
I almost was not going to show it but then I thought someone might be up to the challenge of translating it.

Here are the last three cards for the courtship and marriage set:

 24. Married and Settled.
 A vision of the Future.
25. "I Just Knew It Would Be a Boy."

The marriage has begun. In the second one there are three children. Two girls and a boy.
The one in the last picture looks like she was one of the bridesmaids.

Here is a random picture for you to look at:

No idea who this but, I do know it was taken during someones class trip somewhere.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a good week. It's suppose to be a very comfortable week around here. Just the way I like it.
I hope you will come back again soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Thank you note: Nov. 25, 1927 Ogema, Wis

Dear Friends,
The weekend is here! It's starting out really good. I just hope it stays this way for awhile. It should, spring is here, finally! The leaves on the trees are finally starting to pop out more and more.
I do have a busy weekend planned. I'll tell you more about next week.
Anyway here is the next letter. It is just a thank you note.

As always here is what I think it say:

  We wish to thank
you, for the kindness
and sympathy shown
during out late
bereavement.
Chase Harless family
Mr. & Mrs. Edward Talbot
   and family.

I'm not sure I spelled the one last name right.
I wonder who pasted away. Was it Ed who past away earlier in the year? I don't think so. If it was, boy was that a late thank you.

Here are two more cards of the Earthquake of 1906:

 18. Refugees' camp former dwelling in the ruins in background. This is earthquake work.
19. Looking south, corner Sutter and Stockton.

If you notice in the first picture above the doorway of the make shift shelter is a horse shoe, upside down.  Now in my book that tells me that there is no luck to be held. Maybe back then it meant differently.
In the second picture, I wonder what that tall frame of a building is? Is it something that was under construction or a new building that was just gutted by the fire?
Just something to think about.

To stick with the theme of morning here are a few things that go with that subject.

I do not know who this pertains to. I do like the image on the front.

Not sure when this was taken. In the second picture I think the couple on the left might be Grandpa parents. So that would make them my great grandparents.

Well that's all I have to share with you to day. I hope you are able to enjoy this weekend and also I would like to wish all mothers (including my own) HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!!!
I hope you will stop by again soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Sandy

Julia: July 11, 1926 Lake Forest, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was short. I had to work on Sat. Which means I had to do housework when I got home because on Sunday we went to our daughter's house to help put in a window. On Monday I had to start an hour earlier so that makes getting to sleep on Sunday night a little harder for me.
Well, that's enough whining from me. Here is the next letter from Julia.

For those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                  Lake Forest, Ill.
                  July 11, 1926
Dear friend:
   Did you think I
was ever to answer
your letter? Well, its
just this I've neglecting
writing more now than
ever. Getting more lazy I
suppose. Ha.
  This is drawing to
a close of a busy day for
us. But this just happens
to be my night on duty.
and in, altho it's just
an ideal evening for
taking a walk or bicycle
ride. Still it isn't half

bad. I'm only on duty every other
evening until 9:20. It seems
often enough to me. to day we had
a large Luncheon party on
quite natural so Sunday is
really the hardest day for us.
Two of us girls went with
Peterson& family ( leh auf feur) to
some kind of a social at a
Methodist church about 10 miles
from here. Had a real nice time.
  Well wow what are you
doing for excitement? Lots of
good times eh?
  I think of your mother
so much as Freda wrote she's
not feeling so well. Surely is
too bad.
  Over the "fourth" a girl
friend & I spent up at a
cottage at Diamond Lake.
only a short distance from
here. About 1/2 hours ride on the
electric car. Had a nice time.
Reminded we of so much the
times we used to motor out
to Harper, Spirit or Worester Lake's
up home. Those were the swell

old times.
  I suppose you get to
see my folks quite often. Was
to write Ed a letter if I'd
only get to do so.
  Quite an incident happened
last night. At the church we
were at they have only a
young student as pastor. He was
asking where I was from as
everybody is so curious. Well
Ogema sounded familiar to him
He knew Skakerberg's from
out at Spirit. Also Mrs. Lundberg.
This world is large, but oh!
How you run up against
people.
   Leaving this to a
close, that these lines will
find you as good as ever
Kindly remember me to
          your Mother.         Julia

I think Julia must have worked at a restaurant or something along that line.
I guess no matter where you go you always run into someone that knows of someone from where you are from.
I know I got a few of the words wrong. They could have been maybe Swedish.
The lakes she mentions are all around by Rib Lake. I think I got the spelling of the last one wrong. or maybe she did. But I think it was both.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is a cousin of my dad, Lois Marie. I don't know what year it was taken.

 Darlene. Someones classmate from 1956.

Just one of the many portrait pictures that I have but do not know who they are. just another reminder, "Always put names on the back of pictures so one hundred years from now, a name will at least go with the face.

Well that's all I have for you today. i hope you will come back again soon for more faded history.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary: July 18, 1924 Rib lake Wis

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. We had gone to Wausau and spent a little time on Rib Mountain. I forgot my camera so no pictures. There were a lot of other people spending time there and taking pictures. It was more then likely the last good day to see any color on the trees this season.
Here is the next letter from Mary. A little something else was included in this one. I think you will get a kick out of it, if you know what it is.

Here is what it says:

               Rib Lake Wis.
               July 18, 1924
Hello Howard,
   You said I was to
write first this time
so I'll try my luck.
  How did you get home
Tuesday? I hope you did
not have any accidents
going around the all
those curves. I got home
alright so you needn't
worry about me.
  Did you know that
I was to a show at
Ogema? It certainly was
a dandy. And Ogema

is a nice little place
isn't it? Even if it isn't
as large as Rib Lake.
  How were you at your
work Wednesday? You
didn't fall asleep on the
job, did you? At least
I hope not, that
would make me feel
awful. You know I'd
hate to have some-
thing like that on
my conciense.
I can't think of
a single thing to
write any more so
I guess I'll say

goodbye. Best wishes
   from Mary
Do you think I'd get
any kind of a stand-
ing on this letter?

(This is from the last note with that special gift.)

This is what you get for
not keeping both hands
on the steering wheel

Can you guess what it is?
I'll tell you. Ready....
A HAIRNET!!!
I guess it does not matter what decade you grew up in. Keeping both hands on the steering wheel when you have a date has always been challenging.
I'm not sure if she is saying Grandpa didn't keep both hands on the steering wheel or if she was just trying to be funny. What do you think?

I was trying to figure out what the populations of Rib lake and Ogema  was back then but it has been a little hard to find the right info, when you don't want to have to pay for it. But it looks like back then Rib Lake could have had the population of about 1100, maybe. Back then these town were good sized places because of the logging that went on around there in those days.

Oh well, here are a few random pictures for you to see.

This could be someone from Grandma's side. It was taken at Ross studio in Appleton, Wis.

I think the one on the left could be Grandpa, but I'm not sure.

This is one of the logging camps. Heden Camp in the Town of Hill. I wonder if grandpa worked at this one?

Well that's about it for now. I hope you have a good week.
So till next time.
Best wishes from,
Sandy

Edna: June 2, 1924 Chicago, Ill. (and Gladys)

Dear Friends,
How was your weekend? Mine was quiet and uneventful. Nothing happened that is worth saying anything about.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Edna and a little note included from Gladys.

It is a little hard to read in spots, so here is what it says:

                 Chicago, Ill.
                  June 2, 1924
Dear Friend Howard:
   Received tour letter
some time ago, but
circumstances have
delayed my answering
it. Now I am through
with my collage work
but I am working and
all my spare time is
evenings and I am
awfully tired sometimes.
So if my letter does
not sound very good
(as I presume it will
not) you will know
 the "Reason Why"
  Well did you have
a nice vacation the
30th? I sure did. Did
 not work all day. Went
to Lincoln Park with
Uncle Walter & Gladys

and in the evening I
went to a dance
sure had a wonderful
time.
  As I have told you
before, I am working
for Mr. Block. Mrs. Block
and Leon are away
for a two week vacation
went in car this morning
at 4:00 o'clock. So I
 go with Mr. Block in
a Taxi every morning
& night.
Do not know yet
when I will be home
but it will be some
time soon maybe in
July sometime or August.
  Well news is
is scarce so guess I will
 ring off.

  Was to a picture
show tonight, saw " The
Woman on the Jury". Sure
was swell. Yesterday I
saw 'The Arizona Express"
that also was a peach.
   Howard, are you
still angry with me
since that time on
Christmas when we
went to show at Ogema?
Hope you forget about
it.
  Well greet Thomas
and tell him I am coming
back soon. It is a year
ago tonight the 2nd since
I left home. Arrived Chgo.
tomorrow morning 3rd
Please let me hear
from you sometime
again.
       Sincerely,
          Edna

Hello
How are you
I am fine &
hope you are the
same, tink I sk all
quil for dis time
   from Gladys
P.S. Oh. ya! I forget to
tell you. I see you soon
        "Ha Ha"

Well, interesting. It sounds more and more like she can get a bit crabby from time to time and like to write about it so the reader knows how she was feeling at the time.

I looked up the movies she said she saw and this is what I found.
"The woman on the Jury"
It was a silent film, of coarse. I was trying to find out what it was about but I could not find what I wanted. But, it was remade in 1929 with a title of "The Love Racket". It is a story of a woman who is put on a jury that is to judge another woman for something she herself had done.
I tried to find a picture of it but this is all I could find.

I did find a description of this on. This is an edge of your seat kind of story.
It involves a murder, someone being falsely accused of it and then trying to clear his name, running from the gang who set him up, getting on a train, The Arizona Express. A girl helping to clear his name and getting the real killer to write a letter of confession. The getting that letter to the governor before he is executed in the morning. I wonder if they would remake this one. I can see it being done today, couldn't you?

I wonder what happened at Christmas time that she wants him to forget?

As for Gladys's note on the back, I don't think I copied it right. Any ideas what it says for sure?

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

I think the one on the right just might be Edna.

Not sure who they are or even what they are doing.

Not sure what this picture is of but someone had a habit of writing where it was taken in a certain sector.

Well news is scarce so I will close for now.
Till Friday.
Your friend,
Sandy
