Katheryn Clary: Oct. 30, 1924 Chicago, Ill

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving and did get to stuffed. Mine was just right. My husband started the day with getting a three point buck so his hunting is done, for now. Are you going to be one of those people that find themselves in the middle of mad shopping they are promoting? Not this kid. I don't  like that kind of shopping. There is nothing I need that badly that I would put myself in that kind of mania frenzy.
Anyway here is the next letter from Katheryn.

I know it's typed but I still like to write it out myself.

                                                       October, 30th, 1924

Dear Howard:-
Just tho't I would drop you a few lines in answer to your
letter, I surely was glad to hear from you as soon as I did. I am at work
now, hence, the stationary.
The weather here is lovely I sure do wish it was this
nice during my vacation this summer. I am anticipating a wonderful time
next summer and believe me I am going to have it. What do you do all thru
the summer? I suppose you go fishing etc.
So they have quite a bit of liquor up there eh? My goodness
that is some place then. Do you have any exciting parties? We just had a
peach of a party at the Edgebrook Golf Club a good time was had by all.
I am very sorry to hear that your mother was ill this summer,
and am glad that sh is better. Give her my love and tell her I said not
to do too much work around the house there, to let some of her heavy set sons
do it, ha- ha. I'll just bet "Elmer" is some shiek eh? Are you going to
have a Halloween Party? I have been to a couple of them so far. I bet you have
the real parties when it comes to Halloween out there, with all your pumpkins,
cornstalks and oak leaves. That is where I would like to be for a party like
that some time. Maybe we could get a crowd to drive out some times and we could
arrange to camp close by you, wouldn't that be the berries?
Gosh I wish Xmas would never come, it seems that every time
it gets close to the holidays I am always broke. I guess I broke all the time
anyho.
Well, Howard I guess I will call it quits for this time,
hoping to hear from you soon.
                                                        Always your bestest friend,

It sounds like the weather was nice around by Chicago when she wrote this letter.
It also sounds like the liquor was flowing around by Grandpa also. I did show you a picture of Grandpa and some of his friends with what looked like bottles a while ago.
She said she went to a party At Edgebrook Golf Club. I looked it up and it still there.

I was hoping to find a picture from the 1920's but could not.

As for Halloween parties in the 1924 by Ogema, I'm thinking they also had a peach of a time.

Here are few random pictures I picked for you to see.

I'm not sure who these people are but they are at a lake.

This Grandpa harvesting what looks like potatoes. I don't know what year this was.

I don't know who this person is but I think it was taken around Halloween time, I think.

Before I go I'll share picture of the deer my husband got.

That's all I have to share with you today. So have a great weekend and please stay safe.
Your friend always,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Oct. 22, 1924 Rib Lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Here it was very foggy. Not a good thing for hunting season. The husband has not gotten anything, yet. The snow have come close to being all melted but today on Monday it came back. Not as much but everything is once again covered in the white stuff.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what I see when I read it:

              Rib Lake Wis
              Oct. 22, 1924
Hello Howard;
   Well, since you
say I'm honest I'll have
to write this week or I'll
 spoil my reputation.
I hope you got home
alright Saturday.
  I was in Westboro Sunday
but did not stop at
Youman's. Bannervilles
went for a ride so I went
along. We went up on 102
and then thru the curves
into Ogema and thru West-
boro and then home again

I wasn't home at all. In the
evening & went to Wellington
with Rosies & my brother.
I had a real nice time
and we stayed till the
end. I'm going to that
basket social at Niggeman's
School tonight, but I
have nothing in my
basket yet, so I'll have
to get busy. And I have
another letter to write.
I think the person that
 invented letter writing
ought to be put into
prison for life.

Think I'll close now as
I'm awfully busy
Best wishes from M.K.
I hope you can read this
I can hardly read it myself.

If I remember right she did mention Youman's  in a different letter. At that time I didn't know where it was, well it looks like it was in Westboro and not Rib Lake. I wonder how long that store was around?
The road she talks about that runs between Westboro and Rib lake, I think is Country trunk D. It is a very curvy road. I was talking to someone at work about it and said that it originally started out to be an old Indian trail. The things you learn when you least expect it.
I wonder what she put in her basket and if maybe Grandpa went to the Basket Social. I guess we will never know.
I got a little bit of a chuckle when she said he called her honest.

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to see.

Grandpa, Grandma and the first three boys with a deer Grandpa got. I wonder when this one was taken and how old the boys were.

A picture of a deer along side the road.

In honor of the recent snow fall here is a picture of the garage area. Us kids spent many days playing in that little woods.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope everyone has a very good Thanksgiving and stay safe.
Your friend always,
Sandy

Cousin Emma: Oct. 8, 1924 Majorville, Alta. Canada

Dear Friends,
I hope you are not to buried in snow where you live. It's hard to believe that around by Buffalo New York that they got 7 feet of snow. It's hard even imagine that much snow in such a short amount of time. We have more snow here on the ground for this time of year then we have had in a long time. I can remember having a lot of snow on the ground when I was growing up.
Anyway here is a post card from Grandpa's cousin Emma. She sent this from Majorville, Alberta, Canada. I don't know if she lived there or if she was just visiting.

Here is what it says:

     Majorville, alta,
     Oct. 8, 1924
Dear Howard:
   I am keeping
my promise even
if it did take
me a long time.
  How are you
these days? How
is your mother?
Greet her and
the rest. Your cousin
                Emma

I don't know if anyone will be able to tell me anything bout her. If they do I'll try to pass the information along to you. There could future letters from her but right now I'm not sure.

I thought that with so much of the country getting more snow then they are use to I'd share a couple of pictures from the scrap book.
 Some drifts within a few
miles of the inn-- Irving
Schmidt is shown.

The motorists who have been marooned at the Countryside Inn on Highway 41 near Franksville are
shown Wednesday afternoon perched on the snowplow which freed them. It was stuck when this
picture was taken, but later the inn's guests got their cars out.

Now a random picture for you to see.
I'm not sure what year this one was taken but I think there is a good chance to was from the 19 teens.

Well that's about all I have to say this time. I just want to wish all the hunters good luck with the hunt this year and to also be safe.

Till next time,
your friend,
Sandy

Cousin Walter Walin: Oct. 3, 1924 Chicago, Ill

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was short because I worked Saturday. Plus it's a little too cold out there for me. At least it looks like the hunters will have snow for hunting season. I little cooler then most would like but at least good tracking snow.
Anyway here is the next letter from cousin Walter.

As always here is what I can make out.

                  Chicago, Ill
                   Oct 3rd 1924
Dear Howard:
                 Got your
card sometime ago and
really I meant to answer
it before but I kept on
putting it off and then
the last few days I've been
so darn busy I didn't get
time. You see I did a
little painting the last
week so kept pretty busy.
    So far I'm not
working yet but am trying

to get a job on the
street cars. If I don't get
it soon I'm afraid I'll
have to try something else
because no work no pay
so that won't get me so
very far. Gee I haven't
been out hardly at all
since I got back so I'm
getting rather tired of
staying at home nights.
   I suppose you are
working every day and
having a good time nights.
Do you still see that girl
over at Rib lake? When
are you going to get married(ha)
   It sure was some

cyclone that went thro'
up there. I've read a
little about it in the
papers and then Alfred
Nelson told me some
about it. It sure is to
bad tho: Also I got some
stuff on it from my Jane(?)
up there in Wither(?). She
is still up there so you
see I'm single again Ha!
   I've seen Catherine
McClure several times
since I came back. Saw
her last night again.

It sure seams nice to
see some one from the
old town again and then
especially her as I went to
school with her for 12 years.
She's a pretty nice girl at
that.
   Well Howard I
don't know much to write
about so will call this all.
Write soon & tell me all
the latest.
              Your Cousin
                   Walter
             1724 Belmont Ave.
You asked me to call Gladys
or Edna but um I've lost their
telephone number & address.

I wonder if Grandpa gave him the phone number and address for Gladys or Edna?
I wonder if he got that job on a street car or if her had to go looking somewhere else.

This is a picture of street cars in Chicago in the I think the 1920's.

I wonder how long he remained single and if  Catherine McClure became an item. After all he went to school with her.
I wonder if the girl he is talking about is Mary or Rose. Because Mary keeps talking about Grandpa being with Rose.
He talked about the cyclone that went through, I wonder if it was the same storm Mary mentioned in one of her letters.
So many questions that will never be answered.

Anyway here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This looks like a picture of damage done to barn after a bad storm. Something like Walter talked about. I don't know who's barn this was nor when it was taken.

This is Neil Carlson. Someone who went to school about the same time my dad did. Love the hair style, don't you?

This is a picture of my mom's brother, Jerry Meyer. I wonder how old he was in this picture?

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
So till next time, stay warm.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 30, 1924 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
How are you? Is it cold enough out for you? I don't know about you but I'm ready for the weekend except, I have to work on Saturday. It's that time of year when where I work we are usually busier. Sometimes it makes it hard to enjoy the holidays because we have to work so much more.
Enough of me whining here is the next letter from Mary.

As usual here is what it says:

                  Rib Lake Wis
                   Sept. 30, 1924
Hello Howard--
   I got your letter
yesterday so you must
be alive yet any how.
That was a real letter.
I mean because it was
so long, not because
you gave me so
many compliments.
 But say, you can't
come Saturday because
I have a half date
for Sat. The kind you had the 4th.
  I feel awfully sorry
for you that you had

to stand out in the rain.
Here's hoping you didn't
catch a cold.
  Hows your toothache or
are you all over it?
I know thats no fun
because I had an awful
lot of it when I went to
school.
  We have a basket
social at our school a
week from Sat. and I
spose the other schools
will have theirs pretty
soon.
  Was at Wellington Sunday
and that perhaps I'd

see you and Rose there
I think Anna R. was
there.
  Guess I'll close as it's
getting late good luck
                        Mary K.

Hospital Nurse- You say you wish to see
the young man who was injured in the auto
accident?
"Yes; I thought it would be only fair to
give him the kiss he was trying for at the
time it happened."- Judge

He couldn't have been very
good at one hand driving

Another interesting letter from Mary. I wonder exactly what a half date is?  I hope Grandpa did not have to deal with his toothache to long.
I wonder how many basket socials Grandpa went to and if there was a certain basket he would bid on.
I like the little comic she included. I wonder if there was a little hint included or maybe a warning or maybe she just like the message it was giving.
I also wonder how long he was involved with Rose.
So many questions  that will never be answered.

Now here are a few random pictures for you to see.

I have a lot of pictures of people that Grandpa and Grandmas children had gone to school with plus a number of their pictures. There also a number of pictures from school trips. Over time I'll include one of them. Most do not have any names written on the. This one does. Her name is Sharon Swenson who was 11 when this picture was taken.

I wonder what Grandma was trying to do in this picture.

This is a tractor shed and boarding house that was at Macky Spur. I'm not sure what year this one was taken.

Well that's about all I have to share with you this time.
So stay warm and good luck,
from,
Sandy

Anna: Oct. 1, 1924 Marinet, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a nice weekend. Mine was a little on the short side. Right now, winter has returned a little sooner then I wanted it to. The last winter is still a little to fresh in my mind. This winter has a chance to be a lot like last one.
Anyway here is the next letter from an Anna. I'm not sure if it is one of the other ones that have already written. For some reason she is writing from Marinet, Wis. It's just a postcard.

Here is what I see when I read it.

Hello little cousin:
I got home fine.
Found Rev. Palm
in Escanaba with
out much trouble.
Came just in time for
breakfast. Rev. Lund's
and another minister
and        women
came to get me in
a big swell sedan.
How did you get back
home? How's your
mother. Helsa her
from me- also your
Dad and Tom.
       As ever Anna.

Well apparently she is a cousin. She had been to Escanaba. Which in the UP of Michigan. That's about all I can say there.

Here are a few random pictures for you to see.

Five of Grandpa and Grandma's kids. It looks like Jeanie is trying to make a break for it.

My backyard looks something like this right now.
See what I mean.
This is just from the last 24 hours. It's only November. What will the next 5 to 6 months looks like?

Finally.

My great uncle Thomas with his friend Gotfred Weberg. Uncle Thoma was a veteran of WW1.

Well that's all I have for you this time. So stay warm.
Your friend,
Sandy

Kay Clary: Sept. 27, 1924 Chicago, Ill

Dear Friends,
How are you? Did you have a good week? Mine was uneventful. I will have a short weekend. I volunteered to work Saturday. It's been a while since I worked on a Saturday so I thought it was time to do one.
It's been a while but we hearing from Kathryn again finally. So here it is.

I know it is typed but I will copy it for you anyway.

                             September 26th, 1924

Dear Howard:-
I suppose you will be very much surprises to hear
from me but I really don't whether you wrote last or I
did, but just the same I tho't I would write and see how you
are.? For that matter I would like to know how you all are
mother, Dad and Tom? Are you married yet? I'm not and have
no intention of doing so.
What did you do during the summer? Anything ex-
citing? I spent most the summer I can say practically all of
it in "Twin Lakes" Wisc, I sure did have a wonderful time,
and am looking forward to spending next summer there. Lou
and Theresa Lambert were up to Hayward this year but I guess
did not stop off at your place did they? At least Lou did not
say anything about it.
Is Elmer married? None of the Lamberts are
married as yet but I suppose Theresa will be soon, one never
can tell.
Did you have have a pleasant summer up there? It
rained just about every day here but we had to make the best
of it. Gosh we sure are haveing wonderful weather here now
tho' I certainly would not mind taking a vacation now.
well we will all  be looking forward to Xmas
next I suppose, but I am not very keen about it. I hate the
winter, never want to see it come. I am still struggling
along here at the same place working, such is life in this
big city, just one pay day after the other.
Well Howard when you get time I certainly
would like to hear from you and let me know what you are doing
with yourself these days. I have an idea you are married by
this time, am I mistaken?
                                 Write soon,
                                                 As ever,
                                                             Kay
Kay Clary
3510 Southport Ave.
Chicago, Illinois.

I'm not sure right now how many more letters there are from Kathryn but if I remember right this is the last year I have for her.
It sounds like her and Theresa are kind of friends but not as close as they use to be.
She said she was spending a lot of time at Twin Lakes Wis.
Twin lakes is located in the southern part of Wis. close to the Ill. border.

It's a small town today of  almost 6,000 people.
I was trying to find out when it was founded but I couldn't find the info I was looking for. I'm thinking the attraction might be the lake

I wonder if Kathryn ever got married and if she did what her life turn out to be.

Oh well here are a few random pictures I chose for you to see.

I think this picture was taken at the beaver pond.

It looks like it's the picture of an inside of someones cabin, but I could be wrong.

I don't know what year this one was taken. I think my dad might know who this is for sure.

Well that's about all I have for this time.
So till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Sept. 25, 1924 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. On Saturday my husband and I went to Marshfield . On the way there we saw two bald eagles along side the road on the north side of Stetsonville eating a dead animal. That for us is really rare to see one eagle but to see two is something I will not see again for a long time.
We also saw in a field a  picture perfect kind of buck on hot pursuit of a doe. What I mean by a picture perfect deer is a perfect ten point or bigger rack and a big body on the buck. And no time to take a picture.
Anyway enough about my weekend, here is the next letter from Mary Kauer.

As always here is what it says:

               Rib Lake Wis.
               Sept. 25, 1924
Hello Howard,
   Well, I'll have to
mail this letter today if
you are to get it by
Sat. so I'll try my luck.
  How did you come
thru the storm we had
Sunday? Was it bad
around your place? It
seems that it struck
every place but Rib Lake.
Must be the people
in Rib Lake are pretty
good, after all. Our
house shook just a

little so you could notice
it. There were some trees
across the road but nothing
else happened that I heard
of. But the wind sounded
just terrible.
Did you and Rose go to
Wellington or did you
get scared out, too.
  Some man from here was
coming home from West-
boro and said the
 wind almost tipped his
car. It was going up and
down all the time.
  Did you see Rose this
week already or are you

too busy to go bumming
around.
  We were to that picnic
Sunday but it wasn't very
nice. Aver Everything
was so muddy & wet and
then to finish it I fell
under the swing and
got my coat all muddy.
  So long & best wishes
               from Mary K.
I think this is a fair
size letter don't you?

It sounds like they had a good storm that week. I'm everyone made it through.
I wonder how long Grandpa and Rose were a thing?
I wonder what she was doing that she fell under the swing into the mud?
So many questions that will never be answered.

Oh well, here are a few random pictures for you to look at.
Remember if you see someone you know just let me know.

I wonder what they are looking at. This picture was taken at Weberg's. Kind looks like a hole in the ground or a wash out. What do you think?

No idea who this little boy is. But to me he looks like he was cross eyed. But a picture can be very deceiving.

No idea who this couple is.

Well that's about it for today.
So best wishes to all,
from your friend,
Sandy
