Mary Kauer: Dec. 18, 1925 Rib Lake, Wis

Dear Friends,
I don't know about you but I had a good weekend. I went to see my youngest on Sat. with one of my nieces. She enjoyed it because her children were not with. So she could relax and really look at things without having to keep an eye on them.
On Sunday I painted the swing I have in the backyard. It looks new again.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

                    Rib Lake Wis
                    Dec. 16, 1925
Dear Howard:-
I got your letter today and
was glad to hear from you, of
course. Who wouldn't be?
I wrote one letter already
tonite, so I really ought to
leave this one till tomorrow.
Two letters a day is almost
too much for me, don't you think
so too? If I keep on this

way I'll have to get a typewriter
soon.
I hope you can come Sat nite
our program isn't till next
Wed. Friday there is one at
Spirit lake and Sat. at Rib
River where Miss Kriss teaches
I spose John Kauer will be
right Johnnie on the spot. I'm
------ I think I'll go
to the Spirit Lake program
if the weather keeps up.

My first cousin wants to go.
I think I'll go home the
day before Xmas and stay till
after New Year's. Say I just
had a nap norc. But it wasn't
very long long just about 3 minutes.
My writing looks worse now
than I did before, doesn't it?
I was to show Sunday and
gee I wish you could have
seen it. I don't know when
I laughed so much. It

was just a dandy to get you
over the blues.
I think I'll close now cause
I'm falling asleep again. We
worked quite a lot today that's
the reason I'm so tired.
I told Rose about the
Album and she said she had
a good price to put write in it
but she didn't tell me what
it was.
     Good Luck from Mary
I looked this letter over and gee, it looks scrawly

Not a lot here. Just a normal letter. I wonder if they got together around Xmas time.

Anyway here are a few random pictured for you to look at.

I think this is a picture of Mary.

This is Gotfred Weberg and Elmer Johnson.

No idea who this is. It could have been taken in the fall.

It's been awhile since I put a picture from the scrap book. A lot of the pictures are kind of big to fit in the scanner so I took a picture of one.

In 1929, Al Smith congratulating the newly elected New York governor, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Well that's about all I have for you today. I hope you enjoyed it.
I hope you will drop by again.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Dec. 10, 1925 Rib Lake Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was still uneventful. I just wish it could have been warmer and no little snow showers.
Here is the next letter from Mary:

As always here is what it says:

                 Rib Lake Wis
                  Dec. 10, 1925
Dear Howard:-
  I'm glad to hear you
got home alright and hope
your cough didn't get any
worse. Then Mrs. Westberg would
think you're going to die
pretty soon.
  They didn't say anything
here about getting in late
I don't know if they heard

me or not.
 But I saw Agnes Schnieder
this week and she said that
Ma was mad cause I called
you up. it's no use talking
Howard we've got to quit and
quit for keeps. But we'll
have to be farther apart
than 17 miles for that, don't
you think so, too? Let's one
of us move to Canada and
the other to mexico.

Well, I hope the roads will
be good till Saturday.
Maybe I'll know some news
then, I don't know a darn
thing to write tonight.
What are you doing now,
are you at work or are
you still at home being
Mammes boy baby.
So long now, I've got to
go to church or I'll be

late
(In Norway a girl who wishes to
marry must first show a certificate of
her ability as a cook before she can
become a wife.)

I couldn't get married in a
hundred years because
all I can cook is vegetable
soup and no one can eat
soup three times a day

P.S. next time you wish anything
for me, wish that I could write a
nice looking letter.

I liked the little thing she cut out of a paper about girls in Norway having to prove they can cook. Could you imagine if that was a rule today? But maybe it should be a rule for everyone who lives on their own. It's better to know how to cook then just heat or throw something in the microwave.
For two people who lived 17 miles apart they sure did enough writing. But that distance at that time was harder to travel. But I think they got together a lot more then other people knew.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No clue for sure who they are. But I think there is a possibility they are children of Grandpa's brother, maybe.

Since it is spring I thought I would share a picture of ground being broken.

No idea who this is. The picture was taken in Appleton, Wis. At a studio named Ross.

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good weekend.
Till Tuesday.
Your friend,
Sandy

Lillian L.: Dec. 5, 1925 Marquette, Mich.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Saturday was a nice warm day at first. Then it started to cool down. Sunday was cooler and rainy. But at least there was no drama, for me.
This next letter is from a new girl, Lillian L.. I'm not exactly sure about the last name so I'm just going to put a L, it's hard to make out, it's a challenging one to read as you will see.
Here it is:

Now bare with me. I'll write it out the best I can.

                  Dec 5 1925
Mr H. Johnson:__
  Received your letter
a time ago which
thanks very much
I couldn't imagine
from who that letter
was from I wasn't
going to remember
who it was, But then
as you said about
Mr. & Mrs. Rase that's
how I remembered
then. well, I still
remember the time
I was there I wander
when will it  he again
I spose for a good

many years after all.
Its over a year since
I was there the time
sure flies, can't
imagine where that
time has gone.
I figure on stay-
ing at Marquette
for few more
months or probly
till spring. I'm
tired of Marquette
already. I wonder
if Detroit will
be the next town
as all young go
there. But it
seems to me as

if I wouldn't enjoy
myself there I ima-
gine its too big
for me yet. I guess
I'll wait for spring.
  Oh the weather
here is cold now
at present only
a little of snow
tho' Just the
same. How is it
at Wisconsin
  Will you please
tell that Mrs
Rase to write to
me. I will not
write until she
writes first, tell

her I wish I was
there to haul her
out; she sure takes
time but she writes.
  Well, I wish
you all a merry
X-mas, hoping that
you'll excuse my
pencil writting as
my pen is broke
I'll remain this
scribbling.

Like I said this was a very challenging one to copy. I did my best. Some words I know I got wrong. I'm not sure if I spelled  her last name right. That's why I put only a L for her last name. Maybe somewhere in the future there will be a clearer spelling of her last name. I'm not sure how many letters there will be from her. I wonder if they are all this challenging.

So here are a few random pictures for you to see:

This is another picture of a root cellar that was on the home place. Where uncle George's house now sits.

Three girls. No idea who they are.

This is half of a picture. This is aunt Jeanie. I wonder how old she was here.

Well that's all I have for you today. Come back Friday for another look at faded history.

Mary Kauer: Dec. 1, 1925 Rib lake, Wis and a Turkey Tale

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine, had some drama. There was almost a triple murder in my backyard.
Got your attention didn't I. Let me explain.
Wednesday night after seven o'clock in the evening, I was doing some looking on the computer, when I heard my turkeys start to make a commotion. Usually they are very quiet. But I knew something was out there and they wanted me to know about it.
When I looked I noticed an animal on the other side of their pen trying to get in. At first I thought it was a dog but then I noticed the short tail. A bobcat! I open the door ready to yell when I noticed a couple of turkeys on the lawn. At first I thought they were wild turkeys but then realized they were my turkeys. I yelled, "NO!!!"
Then with me in my pj's I quickly went out to the garage to put my boots hoping that the turkeys had not run to far and that the bobcat was not having supper.
When I rounded the corner there the turkeys sat. All three lined up in a row as if waiting to be killed. The bobcat was by the last one. The turkey is almost as big as the bobcat.
I start yelling and waving my arms hoping to chase it away and that it wouldn't take a turkey with it in the process. It worked he ran away.
Now I had to make sure everyone was o.k. They were all still just sitting there. I checked them all and I could not see any wounds. But now I had to find a place to put them to keep them safe till we got the pen fixed.
I decided to put them in a pen we have in the barn that we used for the chickens over the winter. The next trick was to get them there. Herding more then one turkey at a time is not exactly easy. I decided to carry them. I tried to pick up the first one but did not hold her tight enough at first. She knocked my glasses off. And also lost a number of feathers.
I finally got a good hold of her and was able to carry her to the barn with no more problems. Now to get the second one, still sitting in the same spot. This one was a little easier to pick up and carry.
Now for the third one, the one the bobcat almost had for supper. She was a little smaller then the other two and a little more active. I thought I would try to guild her to where I wanted her to go. And it worked. So all are safe. And so far no sign of the bobcat again.
Here is proof the turkeys are fine.

Well enough of that, here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what it says:

             Rib Lake
             Dec. 1, 1925
Hello Howard,
  Say my pens on the
bum so you'll have to ex-
cuse the blot. Anyways I'm
in a hurry, because its
getting quite late already
and they might put me
in if I mail this letter
after nine o'clock.
I was out to do my

shopping this evening. I
got a confirmation present
for one of the girls I stood up
for. Its a box with powder
compact and perfume in it.
its awfully nice but maybe
her dad won't let her use
it cause she's only sixteen.
And while I was there Mrs.
Bogamill came in and she
bought me a drink and
then we went to the farmer
store to see their toys.

And what do you think?
I had my hair cut tonite.
I was always scared to go
there at nite on account of
the men but no one bit
me.
Say, I'm sending you a nice
pair of___ you can hang
them up in your room some
where's and then you can
look at them when you
feel like it. Maybe she wears
garters, too, I don't know tho.
  Mrs. Hipke didn't say

anything Sunday. She went
to church and I went home
so I guess she forgot. But
when I got two letters from
you Monday she said, well
he's got it bad.
  Say, this is all the
news I know except that I
didn't go to the party Sunday.
I went to show it was a good
show but pretty sad.
  Don't you wish you were
a kid again when you see
all the toys in the window.
              Mary

I wonder how often Grandpa wrote to Mary and what he wrote. Sigh....I guess I'll never know. So for the pair she was talking about, she had included a picture of a woman's legs. I wonder if Grandpa was a leg man. Just more questions that will never be answered.
I know I am miss spelling some of the names she mentioned, sorry.

Here are few random pictures chosen for different reasons.

No idea who this man is but I think in the background is what could have been used for food storage and or a home.
Not sure who these boys are but they could be a couple of my cousins.

I'm not sure who the guys are but one must have shot the animal by the log. It looks to me like it could have been a badger.
Well that's all I have to tell you today. I hope you like my tale.
Enjoy your weekend and drop- by on Tuesday for another letter and pictures.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: Nov. 19, 1925 Rib Lake Wis.

Dear Friends,
I don't know about you but this last weekend was just what the doctor ordered around here. It got into the 70's around here on Sunday. A little windy but still very enjoyable. My daughter's bridal shower was a very nice get together. No drama's that I know of, excepts some of the youngsters doing what all young kids do at a get together like this.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always here is what it says:

             Rib Lake Wis
            Nov. 19, 1925
Dear Howard:-
  Well, seeing I made
you mad last nite I'll
try and make up by writing
today.
  How are you today?
I hope not too tired. Because
I do feell feel kind of
sorry for you then. I

know I hate to work
when I'm tired.
  My sister was over here
last nite but I haven't
seen her today yet. I'm
going over after while and
I spose I'll get it then.
Mrs. Hipke wanted to know
how it was that you always
came without her knowing
anything about it. I'll tell
you what else she said
when I see you. That is

if you come again. You
said something about
quitting me didn't you?
Say, I can't think of any-
thing to write, guess I lost
too much sleep this week.
       Lots of love from
                          Me
P.S. Isn't it fun being
married and have no one
else know about it?
P.S. If this letter sounds crazy
its because I was with all the

rest of the _________Swedes
last nite.

I wonder what she did to make him mad?
It sounds like Grandpa could be kind of sneaky when he wanted to.
I wonder why he said he was going to quit her?
I also wonder what she means by being married and no one knowing about it.And why she said being with the rest of the Swedes last night. I have an idea what she means but not for sure. What do you think?
So many questions that will never be answered.

Here are a few random pictures for you to see.

I think I may have shown you this one before, don't remember. But it Grandpa and two girls.

Grandpa and Gladys Swanson.

Tillie Weberg

Well that's about all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good week and I hope you drop by on Friday for another letter and pictures.
Your friend,
Sandy

Anna: Nov. 14, 1925 Milwaukee, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was, so far, quiet. I am right now in the process of putting together a bridal shower for my youngest daughter, which is this weekend. it's just going to be something simple. More like just a get together for family and friends that can make it. So so going to busy for the next couple of days.
Here is the next letter from Anna. it looks like at this time she was living in Milwaukee. Living with a minister and helping out different people.

Now this is a long letter but as always here is what I make out of it.

             896 Scott St.
            Milwaukee, Wis.
           Nov. 10, 1925
Hello My old Pal:- How
are you? I'm fine. I was
glad to hear you and Mary
are on loneable teams
yet. I read three letters
today thats doing pretty
good isn't it.
   Milwaukee is some
town I can tell you.
I've worked five days since
I came here the rest of
the time I've been sight
seeing. I am at Rev. Hammar
now. It certainly is a
nice place to stay. We

have more fun. They have
no children. I've met so
many nice people in church
also. Dandy young people.
 A woman called up to-
night who wants me to come
and work for her. I said
I would. She is a S. Methodist
and is going to the hospital
and be operated on. I'm
going to keep house for her
man and two boys-12-8.
I have three jobs promised
me in thou different stores
so you see I'm well supplied
as well as a wonderful
boarding & stepping place.
They are a young couple and

I'm so at home here
  Helen & Hannah writes
to me about your kindness
taking them up to the
basket social. What are
you doing now? Are you
still at Rib Lake?
I think it will be lone-
some out to this place where
I'm going tomorrow because
I've been on the go all the
time here.
  Sat. P.M. there was such
a snow storm but Mrs. H.
and another woman & I
went up town. We giggles
and laughed like crazy.
We heard after wards

about the terrible blizzard
there was Sat. I guess
people thought we were
crazy but we were not
the only ones. The streets as
well as the stores were
just crowded.
I'm reading the book
"Wanderer of the Waste Land"
by Zane Grey. it sure is good.
 Tell Mary Hello? Write
to me soon if not sooner
won't you.
Helsa your Mother,
Dad & Tom from me-
  As ever-the same old
                             Ann

P.S. This is Thur. I never
got you letter mailed so
will write some more. I'm
at Wauwatosa now. Mrs.
Hallstrand went to the
hospital to hours after I
arrived here so you can see
what I have on my hands.
She had an operation for
a tumor this morning.
Mr. H. has been gone all
day and won't be back till
tomorrow night. Two of
the neighbors have called
so I don't feel so alone.
  My address here is
58th and Mieneske route 1
Wauwatosa, Wis.
 In care of Gustav Hallstrand

I think I'll only be here
three weeks then you can
address it to- 896 Scott St.
Milwaukee, Wis. in care
of Rev. C.J. Hammar.
  Write to me soon because
its lonesome out here.
Can you read this
scratching

Now if you remember Anna was in Marinette. Now she is staying at a Rev's place but working at a number of different places.
I wonder how things turned out for Mrs. Hallstrand?
I wonder what kind of places she visited when she was site seeing in Milwaukee?

I looked up the book she was reading by Zane Gray. It was first published in 1923. It is thinly disguises as an autobiography. He wrote more then 90 books. About 50 of his books have been made into about 112 movies. He dies in Oct. 23,1939 of heart failure.

Helsa should have an o over the a which translates in to healthfulness.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

On the back is written: Mrs. Nels Johnson and son Fred. No clue when it was taken.

No idea who these women are or when it was taken or where.

This picture is Grandpa's house. I do not know who is standing in the doorway for sure.

Well that's about all I have for you today. I hope you have a good weekend.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Cousin Walter Walin: Nov. 9, 1925 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone had a good Easter weekend. Mine was good. No dramas. Just a nice weekend for me.
It's been a while since I've shared a letter with you from Cousin Walter. So here it is.

When Walter writes a letter, he writes a letter. As always here is what it says:

                    Chicago Ill.
                    Nov 8, 1925
Dear Howard:
                  Received your
letter some three or four
weeks ago and have
bee rather busy so didn't
have time to answer
before. I took a little
walk this a.m. and happened
to walk past this girls house
you told me about. Clary
or something like that at
3510 Southport Ave and I
thot' gee I haven't answered
Howards letter so I decided
to do it tonight before
I go out on my usual
Sun eve jaunt. (Ha!) Do
you ever hear from her

Give me her number and address
and I'll call her up some
time & say its you.
  Hows the weather
up north. its pretty cold
here today. Rained all
day yesterday & last eve
at 8 it turned to snow
and also turned colder.
   Jalmer Sulkko came
to Chi. several weeks ago.
He wrote me from here
but I never answered yet also
they called up twice but
I was out. I think I'll
have to answer it soon
or never. Guess they tho't
perhaps a I could locate
a job for him. Well
they're out of luck as I
can hardly keep working

myself. Oh no not that
I'm out of a job but just
don't like the one I have
but must hold it as
they are very scarce.
         How's the Roseen,
Julin & Westberg family's
O.K. I suppose. I understand
Anna wanted to come to
Chi. Boy she'd get spoiled
down here (Ha!
   I met a swell girl
the other eve altho I already
have a couple others but then
whats a girl or two extra Ha
This one I met Thur eve
is about 17 years old and
sings in a choir. She
doesn't dance or go to

shows, she's a real goody goody.
I'm meeting her again
next Thur eve. Her mother
is sickly & she's the only
one in the family & her dads
dead. They own a swell
3 story brick house they live in
and judging from its location
it is worth close to
a 100,000 grand dollars. She
seemed to like me pretty much
& Oh Boy what I wouldn't
do for a $100,000. Ha! it
sure is worth while if I
can only make the grade.
I'd get married next week
for that amount wouldn't
you? Wish me luck
will you old boy. Listen
mum's  the world about
this please as I don't

want any one to know,
so please tell no one.
   Well news is rather
scarce so must close
for now. Write me
a line soon & tell me
the news.
           Your Cousin
            Walter
greet Tom and the folks for
me as well as Ma & Pa.

Walter can definitely write a letter. I wonder what Grandpa's letter looked like. I will never know I guess.
I wonder if Walter ever hooked up with Katheryn.
Or did he hook up with the girl that lived in the place he figured was worth $100,000? If he did will he ever say her name?  If her place was worth that much back then I wonder what it would be worth now days.
I wonder how many girlfriends he had at the time.
It sounds like he still has the same job but like so many other people does not like his job but with the lack of jobs he has to hold on to it.

Here is a joke from the joke book that might just fit here.

"Are you looking for something, sir?"
I thought it was kind of funny.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

On the back it says Mr. & Mrs. P.W. Johnson
Mr.& Mrs. S.A. Roseen
about 1922.

I wonder if this is the same Roseen Walter mentioned.

I'm pretty sure this is Grandpa. But I don't know what year it was taken.

This one was to big to put in the scanner so I took a picture of it.
At the bottom it says:  N. Nelson  Ogema, Wis.
A logging camp. No idea what year it was taken.

Well that's all I have for you today.
So come back on Friday and I will have another new letter and bunch of pictures for you to look at.
Your friend,
Sandy
