Mary Kauer: Aug. 26, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was nice. The weather was just right. It was more than likely the last warm weekend we will have here for year. I was not involved in any dramas, just the way I like it.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always if you find it hard to read here is what it says:

                Rib lake, Wis
Dear Howard:-
  Well, for once I'll
keep my promise and
write again. How do you
feel today. Gee I hope
you don't feel blue because
I hate to think it's my
fault if you're not happy.
Why aren't you like Ed,
then you would have for-
gotten me long ago and

be having a good time
with someone else.
Mrs. Hipke said I could
go any time Sunday but
gee I feel ashamed to go.
What in the will your
sister-in-law think of me.
Not very much i suppose
after the way I treat
you.
If you go Sunday I can
be ready about 9-15 or so
and if you come Sat. nite

don't come before about
8.30 as I'm going to
church first.
  Say, I can't write any
more as my eyse eyes
are falling shut. I s'pose
you can see that by my
writing.
   Love from Mary
P.S. I'd like to write a
longer letter but I'm so
sleepy I can't think

I don't know about you but there is one message I get from this letter. I think she is giving him hints that maybe he should move on to some else. But for some reason he was trying his best to hold onto her. I guess maybe he thought he could wear her down till she finally agreed to become his one and only. But she is holding fast to her beliefs. I think she was a very strong person.I wonder whatever happened to her. Will I ever find her family and get an answer to that question?

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is a picture of Grandpa's brother Alfred and his wife Selma. I wonder what she did think of Mary.

The name Lois is written on the back. This is Alfred's and Selma's daughter. I'm not sure who the little ones are.

No idea who this couple is or when it was taken.

Well that's all I have for you today. I hope you will come back again soon for another look at history that has faded away.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: July 21, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine kept me busy at work. Which means I did a lot of running around most days.I am so looking forward to a slower paced couple of days.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary.

As always for those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                    Rib Lake Wis
                   July 21, 1926
Dear Howard:-
   Just a few lines to
let you know I'm still
alive and thanks for
the letter. I got it yesterday.
I was going to get a
catechism late nite but
they didn't have any but
the real small ones for
kids. And pa burned up
all the old ones we had
at home here.
I'll send for a big one
and then you can study
all you're good for.
 Did the storm do any

damage around your place
last nite? It blew down
a couple of our apple trees
and blew our clothes
reel over the fence. Our
milk pails were all over
the yard.
Say this is all I can
write just now. This is
about 8.30 a.m. and the dishes
aren't washed yet. I'll write
some evening when I'm not
so tired.
  I pitched hay for pa
yesterday and I got blisters
on my hands & feet and I
had such a backache this
morning so here's where I

swear off hay making.
     Well so long
        Love from Mary.

I wonder if Grandpa was thinking about looking into becoming Catholic? At least that's what I think she was hinting at.
I wonder how bad the storm was and if there was any damage around the home place.
I wonder if Mary was able to swear off making hay?
So many questions where the answers have already faded away never to be answered.

Here are few random pictures for you to look at.

I wonder if this could be uncle Thomas cutting hay. I thought since she mentioned making hay I would show you the way they cut hay back then.

No clue who this could be. It looks like it could have been her conformation picture.

No idea who these guys are. It looks like they've been busy working.

Well that's all I have to share with you this time. I hope you have a good weekend. My husband plans on baling hay this weekend. Tonight I'm thinking of maybe sitting out by the fire pit and just chilling out and enjoying this nice fall weather.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: July 13, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was shorter then I would have wanted it to be thanks to having to work on Saturday. I did find out that the outdoor entertainment has not totally disappeared.I have seen a few deer hanging around but they are not around till it's almost dark out. With hunting season here they willl be more and more scarce to see.
Enough about that, here is the next letter from Mary. It's only one small page.

For those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

              Rib Lake, Wis
              Monday Eve
Hello Howard:-
   I just wanted to
tell you that I'm at
Bogumull's for this week.
So you don't have to
go way out home Wed.
  The girl they had
here fell down stairs
and hurt her back so
I'm helping out now, but
I'm going back home
Sat. nite.
  I don't know any news
right now so I'll close
with good luck Mary.

Short and sweet. I hope the girl that fell down the stairs did get hurt to bad.

Since this is a short letter I thought I would show you something else I found in the old things.

It comes from a little booklet type thing. It might be German. At least when I put a few words into the translator it detect German. Maybe someone out there can translate it.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

Just one of many portraits with no name of date.

Another unknown little girl. No idea when this was taken.

Me, when I was 10 years old. Sorry. It was in the bunch of pictures so I thought it was time to get it out of the way.

Well that's all I have to share with you today. I hope you can come back soon for another look at faded history.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: July 12, 1926 Rib lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
I hope your week was good. Mine was quiet. But it does look like I will not be seeing any more wild life in the field next to me. Why you ask? The person who use to live in the trailer house across the field from me has returned. She has three big dogs which means the deer will not be coming around close to the house any more.So no more live outdoor channel for us.
Well enough of that. Here is the next letter from Mary. The post mark on the envelope was actually Tomahawk.

For those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                  Rib Lake, Wis
                  Sat. forenoon
Dear Howard:-
   I s'pose you are
swearing blue streaks
at me and I can't blame
you if you would. Here it's
Sat. already and I haven't
written yet. I got both of
your letters. I got one
about an hour ago. Pa
is going to town this
afternoon so he can take
this along and mail it.
I don't s'pose you'll get it
before Monday.
Margret &I have been
awfully busy this week

First we had to wash and
since then we've been
sewing and cleaning up.
I haven't even been over to
Kauer's this week.
 Joseph left Thursday morn.
They went to Stevens Point
this time. There are a couple
of fellows there from
Rib Lake.
We have some hay
cut already but didn't get
any in yet. It rained on
it when it was nearly dry.
  Well, I can't write any
more now but if you
come Wed. I tell you all
the news. That show

that was in Rib Lake last
summer is here this week.
Starting the 12th. I guess
there are more shows around
this tear than ever before.
             Love from Mary

I wonder how often Grandpa wrote to Mary? I wish I could have read what kind of letters he wrote. He must have been very persistent in his pursuit of trying to find a connection with that special someone.
It just looks like a normal kind of letter.
I wonder what Joseph did when he went to Stevens Point.
Location of Stevens Point, Wisconsin
Stevens Point at that time had a lot to do with the logging business. In the 1920 the population was around 12,000. Today it's population is over 26,000. More then doubling the population in about 90 years or so.

It sounds like weather at that time was similar to now. Cutting hay and it getting rained on before it can be baled.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is a picture of Mary at Copper Falls. No idea what year it was taken.

I thought this one was just a logging picture but it looks like a hunting one. Notice the gun someone is holding.

Since she mentioned making hay, here is hay on a wagon. No idea who the two people are in this one. The second one is standing next to the wagon.

Well that's about all I have for you today.
Enjoy your weekend. Mine will be shorter. I have to work tomorrow. Yuck.
Oh well, till next time.

Sandy

Julia: July 11, 1926 Lake Forest, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was short. I had to work on Sat. Which means I had to do housework when I got home because on Sunday we went to our daughter's house to help put in a window. On Monday I had to start an hour earlier so that makes getting to sleep on Sunday night a little harder for me.
Well, that's enough whining from me. Here is the next letter from Julia.

For those who find it hard to read here is what it says:

                  Lake Forest, Ill.
                  July 11, 1926
Dear friend:
   Did you think I
was ever to answer
your letter? Well, its
just this I've neglecting
writing more now than
ever. Getting more lazy I
suppose. Ha.
  This is drawing to
a close of a busy day for
us. But this just happens
to be my night on duty.
and in, altho it's just
an ideal evening for
taking a walk or bicycle
ride. Still it isn't half

bad. I'm only on duty every other
evening until 9:20. It seems
often enough to me. to day we had
a large Luncheon party on
quite natural so Sunday is
really the hardest day for us.
Two of us girls went with
Peterson& family ( leh auf feur) to
some kind of a social at a
Methodist church about 10 miles
from here. Had a real nice time.
  Well wow what are you
doing for excitement? Lots of
good times eh?
  I think of your mother
so much as Freda wrote she's
not feeling so well. Surely is
too bad.
  Over the "fourth" a girl
friend & I spent up at a
cottage at Diamond Lake.
only a short distance from
here. About 1/2 hours ride on the
electric car. Had a nice time.
Reminded we of so much the
times we used to motor out
to Harper, Spirit or Worester Lake's
up home. Those were the swell

old times.
  I suppose you get to
see my folks quite often. Was
to write Ed a letter if I'd
only get to do so.
  Quite an incident happened
last night. At the church we
were at they have only a
young student as pastor. He was
asking where I was from as
everybody is so curious. Well
Ogema sounded familiar to him
He knew Skakerberg's from
out at Spirit. Also Mrs. Lundberg.
This world is large, but oh!
How you run up against
people.
   Leaving this to a
close, that these lines will
find you as good as ever
Kindly remember me to
          your Mother.         Julia

I think Julia must have worked at a restaurant or something along that line.
I guess no matter where you go you always run into someone that knows of someone from where you are from.
I know I got a few of the words wrong. They could have been maybe Swedish.
The lakes she mentions are all around by Rib Lake. I think I got the spelling of the last one wrong. or maybe she did. But I think it was both.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

This is a cousin of my dad, Lois Marie. I don't know what year it was taken.

 Darlene. Someones classmate from 1956.

Just one of the many portrait pictures that I have but do not know who they are. just another reminder, "Always put names on the back of pictures so one hundred years from now, a name will at least go with the face.

Well that's all I have for you today. i hope you will come back again soon for more faded history.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: July 1, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Dear Friends,
The week is finally almost over. Why do I say almost? I still have to work on Saturday. I knew it was going to happen because it always happen the Sat. after Labor Day.
Anyway here is the next letter from Mary, it's only a page and a half long this time.

As always for those that find it hard to read here is what it says:

              Rib Lake Wis
            Thursday Morning
Dear Howard:-
I got one of your letters
yesterday and one the day
before. That's the way to
get letters, isn't it?
  I haven't time to write
so very much as the mail
carrier will soon be here.
  You asked me where I
wanted to go. Well, I don't
    know where they will
celebrate except at Marshfield
Joseph came home yesterday
and he said there would
be a big celebration there
the 5th. I s'pose  we'd

have to start out in the
morning, wouldn't we?
I saw Ed & Otto in town
Tuesday evening, I had
gone in with Schneider's.
Ed said he was going to
lay under a tree and go
to sleep all day.
well so long & good luck
            Love Mary
P.S. Let me know at what
time you will come, Ya?

Not a whole lot here. Just talking about celebrating the 4th of July. I wonder where they went? It sounds like Marshfield was where the biggest celebration happening back then.
Marshfield is south of here just 30 some miles away from where I live. In the 1920's the population was over 7 thousand. Today the population is over over 19,000.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No clue who is in this picture. But I thought an outdoor picture would be nice.

No idea who this is. But just another outdoor kind of picture.

Just another summer looking picture. I wounder who took this picture.

Well that's all I have to show you today.
I hope you drop by again real soon.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: June 27, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. A little on the hot side, a little on the wet side, but it was good.
Well here is the next letter from Mary.

For those that find it hard to read here is what it says:

                    Rib Lake Wis
                    June 27, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   I got your letter
Friday fornoon but I
couldn't answer yesterday
because we had quite
a lot of work and in
the evening we went to
town.
  I wish I was coming
to Tulins today its such
dandy weather. But I
couldn't come anyway.
Grandma is still in
bed and Pa & Ma & John &
Pete went to Merrill this
noon so Margaret & I are

home alone. Margaret told
me I didn't dare go away
again today because she
didn't want to stay here
alone.
  Rosie's mother is com-
ing over for awhile  this
afternoon and we are going
swimming out to Wood
Lake. Rosie & her sisters & her
two brothers & Mart and I.
  I got a card from
Anton Kauer yesterday. He
is in Bismark, N. Dakota
already. That's where I'd
like to be too, now. And
then go to Oregon and down
along the coast to Mexico

thru Texas & Colorado and
then north till we came home
again. Gee, wouldn't that be
fun? Then when I'd get old
I'd have stories to tell by
the yard.
  Did you have a good
time at the picnic Thursday
evening? The weather was
quite nice that evening.
Have you made any plans
for the 4th or aren't you
coming? Didn't st some of
the girls at the picnic
vamp you?
 You ought to hear all
the plans that Margaret &
I are making. They are all

dandy but I guess they will
never be so. But it is a
lot of fun to make plans.
There will be a party at
Kauer's tonite. I hope we
have a good time, then I feel
more like working the rest
of the week.
I don't know any more
news so I guess it will
have to be goodbye for
this time.
          Love from M.K.

Oh to be young and to make big plans that you know could never happen. It doesn't matter what time you live or lived in when your young, making big plans are always fun.
I wonder how Anton's trip was.
I think her plan to take that trip would be a great adventure. I wonder if she was ever able to travel like she wanted to. I hope she did.
I hope they all had a good time swimming at Wood lake.
I wonder what kind of picnic Grandpa went to? And did the girls vamp him?
History that has faded away.

Here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

These two I think were taken on someone's senior class trip.

On the back of this one is, " Here is a picture of my mother, Patsy and me at the painted desert."
Not sure who they are. Do you?

Well that's about all I have for you today. I hope you will drop by again soon for more Faded History.
Till next time.

Sandy

Mary Kauer: June 23, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
The holiday weekend is upon us, finally. It's been one of those mixed kind of weather weeks. I just hope the weekend will be tolerable.
Well, here is the next letter from Mary:

For those that have a hard time reading it, here is what it says:

                Rib Lake Wis
                June, 21, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   Well, I didn't intend
to write today but its so
rainy that I can't do any
other work. We got back
from Medford at 5.30 as
the train was an hour & a
half late.
  Say ma laughed at me
because I didn't take you
to church last nite. She said
that was a heck of a way
to do, to make you sit out-
side. So you've got to go with
me some time.
I've got to go down now

and see if the head is burning
so I'll write some more after
supper.
  Well, this is Tuesday afternoon
already. I intended to finish
this letter yesterday so I could
mail it this morning but I
went over to Kauer's in the
evening and stayed till almost
12. Marie Lamberty & Lydia Schacht
just came home last week and
they were over there so of course
I had to go too.
We wanted to go swimming
this noon but it rained so and
got so cold that we gave up
that idea.
  Margaret just made some

cookies and they are awfully
goo. I wish I could send you
some so you could see what a
good cook she is.
I washed & ironed today but
a few of the clothes are still
hanging out in the rain. I
guess I'll go and stand out in
the rain all nite. That will be
just as good as a steam
bath. Maybe by the 4th I'll
be so clean that you won't
know me.
  How did you get home
Sunday eve? I hope you didn't
go in the ditch anywheres.
  How is your mother? I
hope she isn't any worse.

Grandma is sick today. I
guess the weather is a
little too cold for her. It's
almost too cold for me.
Well. I guess this is a
pretty fair sized letter so
I had better quit.
                Love from M.K.
P.S. Excuse the envelopes
        I couldn't find any
        others.

Just an average kind of letter talking about normal things that were going on at the time.
I wonder if she made Grandpa sit outside of the church or if it was his idea. At least that's what it sound like to me happened.
I wonder where Marie and Lydia were that they came home. Just more history that has already faded away.
It does not sound like the weather was any good for older people at that time.

Well here are a few random pictures for you to look at.

No idea who this could be or when it was taken.

Another unknown portrait.

This one was I think an entry at the Price County fair at one time and it won Best Exhibit of Photography. I wonder if Grandpa had entered it or if someone else did. I should be able to find out maybe this weekend when I hang out with the family for the end of the year get together at the family cabin.

Well that's all I have for you today.
I hope you have a very enjoyable Labor Day Weekend.
Till next time.
Your friend,
Sandy

Mary Kauer: June 15, 1926 Rib Lake, Wis.

Hello Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. I know I did. I'll tell you about that some other time.
So here is the next letter from Mary:

For those of you that find it hard to read here is what it says:

                     Rib Lake Wis
                     June, 15, 1926
Hello Howard:-
   I got your letter
yesterday morning and
of course I was glad to
get it. I would have
answered yesterday but
Mr. Hipke went to the
hospital and Mrs. H. went
went with him. I didn't
know whether she'd be
back today or not but
she came back this
noon so now I'll go home
tomorrow sometime. I
want to go to Medford
in the afternoon. I think

I'll stay home till Sunday
Gee but I was tired yest-
erday. It was about 2 o'clock
Sunday nite when I got home
from the party at Schneider's
and I had to work pretty
hard yesterday so I was
glad when it was bedtime
(Dad & my brother took me
home Sunday)
  How are you getting
along? I Don't work too
hard. That might make
you crabby. So Ed looked
awfully lonesome, too.
Well, I always thot it
was only the girls that
got lovesick but I've

noticed that boys get it worse
then girls. I never saw a
girl sit at the table with
her fork halfway to her
mouth.
  Say, I came almost going
out to the coast with Anton
Kauer. I'll tell you about
it when I see you. Gee, but
wouldn't that have been fun.
  It's time to git supper
now so goodbye & good luck
                  from
                  M. Kauer

I wonder why Mr. Hipke had to go to the hospital and how long he was there?
I wonder what kind of party they had at Schneider's that ran so late?
Poor, poor Ed. It sounds like he has it real bad. He must have been a site to see. I can see Mary giving him a very hard time about it.
I hope I read it right about her almost going to the coast with Anton. I wonder which coast she was talking about? More history that has forever faded away.

Here are few random pictures for you to look at.

No idea who is in this picture or even what year it was taken but, it looks like a party of some kind to me.

Looks like a couple from about the right time period. Maybe it's Ed and his girl. But I doubt it.

Just another picture of another couple that looks like they could have very much in love, maybe.

Well that's all I have to show you today. I hope you can come back again for more fading history.
Your friend,
Sandy
