Gladys: Dec. 7, 1932 Chicago, Ill

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. I know a lot of different places had very bad weather. Here we had snow on Sunday morning. We got about 4.5 inches. It was also windy during the day blowing and drifting a bit. when I went out to feed my turkeys it was hard to find the path and I was often over knee deep in snow. But now it's getting warmer so it is starting to melt.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                Chicago Ill
                  Dec 6-32
Dear Howard:-
Three reports on the
banquet have reached me
and all just as enthusiastic
so glad you all got a
deer and that the
club could get together
for a good time.
Not one of my reports
mentioned the ladies
were there not any
present? was it a
stag party?

What are you going to sing in
the program? Are you going to
again speak "Barefoot Boy"?
Gee! I would certainly be happy
if I could be home Christmas
13 Xmas's away from home
in a row. I don't think Edna
will go home either as it
would only be for a couple
of days. and she is pretty busy
in the church doings etc. I
think the way things are
working out. I will be on
night duty over Xmas so then
I can go to the children's program
in the P.M. I do love it so
our patient is pretty bad this
morning. So we don't know
from day to day how things
will go. Things look better
for the nurses through in
the last two weeks. Sort of a
flu epidemic Hurrah!  Maybe
We will all work after all
but maybe without pay as

no one can afford nurses any
more. No cut in their wages you know.
Too bad the scarlet fever has come
up there. I was over to Selma's yes-
terday, but Selma or Edward did not
know the no. of Walins house. They know
which house it is but they never paid
any attention to the no. & Hilding was
not at home. So I asked Eddie to
tell Walter to write you a card &
send you his address I hope that
was O.K. because I don't get over
there again for 2 weeks as I go on
day duty now again. it is snowing
here today 7 cold. Write me soon
& give me all the news. Are you
not glad that the people who bought
Harless's place realy have some girls after
                                        all. Or
                                          are you
                                          disapp-
                                           ointed?
                                               Ha Ha

I wonder what she meant by "Barefoot Boy". Was it a part or a song or just something she called him?
I guess I may never know.
The weather sounded about right for that time of year.
I wonder how long their patient was able to hold on.
It was nice to hear that Grandpa and his club all got deer. I wonder what he got?
I wonder if there were any ladies at the club party.
It does sound like scarlet fever was making it's rounds up this way. How many people had to deal with it at that time?
I wonder if she got Walter's address.
It's to bad to hear that she had not been able to come home for Xmas for 13 years. I wonder when she was able to come back home for the holidays.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

Reminds me of what we had to deal with this last weekend.

Here is a joke from the joke book "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

If he was not so bright, how was he able to be a good philanthropist?

Finally, here is a random picture:

No clue who is in this picture. it looks like they are on a camping trip to me.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good week. Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.
Your friend,
Sandy

Estella Oros: Nov. 26, 1932 Gary Ind.

Dear Friends,
Well, it's the end of yet another week. Mine was the usual hum drum kind of week. Which is fine with me. Drama somethings is very over rated. My weekend will be short as I have to work on Saturday. I just hope the weather won't make things to challenging.
Oh well, here is the next letter from Estella:

As always, for those of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says;

                 Johnson
                  Love

I wonder if she ever received that deer head. Did Grandpa send her one. Can you imagine sending a deer head through the mail today?
Grandpa did have a number of head mounts around their house. I hated those things. It was the eyes. They followed you where ever you went.
I think she said she got a prize for being the best dancer.
Did they ever meet up at any time.
So much that has faded away never to be known by anyone again.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

What may be their last birthday celebration together was observed Thursday by the Prenzlow
triplets (Left to right) Eleanor, Verna, and Violet, of 3217 N. second st. Vera will be married in
June to Elmer Gross. How old are the girls? Well, if you won't tell anyone, they are 27.- Journal
Staff Photo.

I'm sure that once they all were married they still celebrated more birthdays together. It must have been a slow news day.

Here is a joke from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

I wonder why he was so worried about towels. Must have been a huge problem. But, did the chambermaid get away?

Finally a random picture:

I think this was taken at Copper Falls. Not for sure who they are. But I might have shown you one similar to this one before.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
Have a good weekend. I'll try, even though I have to work tomorrow and it's suppose to snow again this weekend.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Gladys: Nov. 23, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was quiet. The weather right now, could be better. Snow and ice. I'm just hoping it does not stay around very long. I'm starting to really crave warmer weather. How about you?
Anyway, here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those of you that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                Chicago Ill
                 Nov 23-32
Dear Howard:-
   Got your letter yesterday
and glad to hear all the news
of the club- I think it
would be a grand idea
to build a log cabin
on the order of a hunting
lodge and I am sure
every one would cont-
riute some thing to
furnish it
Do write & tell me
all about that big
buck for the banquet
If you don't get one
you'll maybe have to
donate your twins
for a veal barbecue.
Well I hope you'll
have a nice Thanksgiving
I have to work my 24
hrs tomorrow as its

shift day and Miss Gus-
tafson's minister will be in
from Rock Island. So good
for her that it was my
turn to do the 24 hrs.
every body will be out so
Miss Avery & I will be
alone and you know
she is very low so we
don't plan on much
around here.
Mrs. Lukes (Ebba Holt) phoned
me yesterday & invited me
for dinner with the whole
Holt tribe. Gee that would
have been nice.
I will go over to Selma's
again some day when I go
on night duty. The other
evening when I was there
I was so sleepy I could
hardly talk at all. I've
been so dead tired lately often
my 12 hrs. of hard work & I mean
hard. It sure is now. So I've

been in bed almost every
night by 8:30 or 9.
Edna phoned me yesterday
She is having her dinner with
the family she lives with. And
Friday night they are all
going to our church to some
doing & as luck will have it
I begin my night duty Friday
night so I can't be with them
Oh! well every pay day counts
Now & I'm afraid there
will not be so many more
I hope your arm will heal
O.K. Gee burns do hurt don't
they?
Minnie & Arthur Johnson
were up to Al Holts last week.
but none of us were there
to see them.
So Hattie is still going with
her boy friend. Did you ever
hear if it was true that Freda
was married. Where is Julia

now. You see I don't know
much about the big relation
of mine any more. "Ha Ha"
Well I am very disappointed
the mail just carry & nothing
from home & of course no
deliveries all day tomorrow
so I'll have to wait until
Friday now.
Well guess I'll close and
finish my work before
dinner-
Write me all the news
& here hoping you fellows
get your buck.
      Best wishes
          As ever Gladys

I wonder if they did build a hunting lodge somewhere. If they did I wonder where and how long it lasted.
I wonder how Grandpa burned his arm and how bad it was.
I wonder how long she worked for Miss Avery.
She's right, every pay day counts even today.
I hope Grandpa got a buck that hunting season.

Here is a picture from the scrap book:

The music went around and round but the old rocking chair was saved in this home at Cordele, Ga.,
heaviest sufferer in the tornado Thursday.- A.P. Wirephoto.

I wonder how much damage happened with that tornado.

Here is a cartoon from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

I'm getting to the end of the joke book. So I'll be showing one joke at a time to make it last longer. Then I have to find something else to share with you. No more old joke books, sorry.

Finally, here is a random picture:

Taken during someones class trip.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you have a good week.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Gladys: Nov. 17, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was the same old same old. The temps are starting to get a little warmer. it's not suppose to get below zero. I hope those temps are done for the year. I'm hoping the weekend will be a good one.
Anyway, here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

Dear Howard:-
Just a few lines in
answer to your newsy
letter.
We are having our
first snow storm today
the streets look wet &
dirty from up here
but all the roofs are
white which is a very
pleasant out look after
looking at the dirty
ones for a year. You
see Miss Avery's apart-
ment is on the 14th
floor so we are a
good deal higher
than a great many
bldgs. around us.
There are quite a few
old homes left in
this neighborhood. We
almost lost our poor
old lady. She got an
abscess in one of her
teeth & being so weak
could not throw off the
infection without
getting deadly sick
from it and then
she had another
embolism attack on
top of that and

then a bad cold
so you can never
know how hard we
have had to work
to keep her out of
pneumonia, but we
think the danger
is passed now.
You see she will
be 83 in Jan. I
was sort of wishing
I could go home
over Xmas, but
Miss Gustafson has
made all arrange-
ments to go to her
home in Nebraska
as this will be her
last Xmas home be-
fore she is married
She will be married
in June as soon
as her boy friend
is ordained. he is
coming in from
Rich island for Thanks-
giving too. So guess
we will have to do a
little shifting of hrs.
so she can see him
You know it never

makes any difference
to me when I'm on
or off because I have
no beau.
Edna came over
for a few minutes
Sunday P.M. she
was on her way to
the Edgewater beach
for dinner. Sunday
night I went down
to see my aunt. She
had an operation
a week ago last
Sat.
I see I sure am a
dull one these days.
Just work & work
haven't been any
where or seen any
thing to write
about.
I suppose you
were pleased with
the election. Well
I hope for the best
but if Garner ever
has to be president
Oh! boy!
  What kind of a
party was Elmer

giving?
You are all wrong
2 cannot live as
cheaply as one and
those who figure
on that get badly!
very badly fooled.
Where are your
club headquarters?
I think it would
be great to build
yourself a log club
house. Something
on the order of a
hunting lodge
Don't you think
that would be
rather nice?
I may go over to
Aunt Selma's when
I get through this
evening. As next
week I go on night
duty again and when
I go there during the
day I don't see the
girls because they
are in school.
Well I guess I
better close and

please excuse
my stationary
with best wishes
to you & Thomas.
    Gladys
write soon & give
me all the news.
Tuesday-Nov 15-32

It sounds like she was staying at one of the tallest buildings in that area. I suppose looking down at the roads they do look dirtier. I wonder how long she did work for Miss Avery.
It does sound like she has been very busy working.
I do wonder where the club house was. I wonder how long Grandpa was involved with it.
This letter was written on those small papers again. I was able to put two together because she didn't write on both sides. There are 9 pages.

Here is an article form the scrap book:

I'm not sure what year this was from. It is in the second scrap book. I wish who ever cut it out of the paper would have left the year.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

Enjoy.

Finally, a random picture:

Not sure who this is for sure. The date stamp is Dec. 64.

Well that's all I have to share with you today.
enjoy your weekend.
I hope you will come back soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

I wonder how she broke her arm?
Not a whole lot here. It sounds like Grandpa is still going to basket socials.
It does sound like she really wants to be "There". I wonder if she was ever able to visit.
I think that two Ann's wrote this letter or maybe the cousin's name was Jean.
I wonder if the second writer was able to find a job.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

The cold weather has temporarily halted the smelt run, but whenever it starts these outfits which have been erected at the water's edge near Michigan end of the Marinette-Menomonee bridge are ready for them.-Journal Staff photo.

If your from Wisconsin you will know all about smelt time. For those of you who don't know what they are, they are small fish. In May there is a Smelt Fry at the fire hall.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs" 1956:

Enjoy.

Finally, a random picture:

Washington Monument taken from the Jefferson Memorial.
Taken during someones class trip.
Not a real good picture, but it was taken and kept.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Ann: Nov. 5, 1932 Gary Ind.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good week. Mine was the same old same old kind of week. It has been cold here. The days starting out below zero. I'm so looking forward to warmer temps.
Here is the next letter from Ann :

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                      Nov. 1932
                      Gary Ind.
Dear Howard;

ing your summer and fall? I

I wish you all could come here some
times to stay a while and see what

1773 Polk St. Gary Ind.
P.S. Please send me a few snap shots of your friends
I mean pictures I'll send some too

It sounds like the job scene for her was not easy at that time.
I hope she was able to find something that lasted a long time.
I think when she wrote "threw" she meant "through". I hope I got the right spelling.
I wonder if they were ever able to meet up at any point.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

After reported engine trouble, at first denied by Nazi officials, the new German zeppelin Hindenburg proceeded up the Rhone valley toward Germany Friday after receiving radio permission to fly over France. The airship is shown over Recife, Pernambuco, at the start of its return maiden voyage, now drawing to a close.- A.P. wirephoto.

I wonder how many flights it had before it's final fateful trip when it burst into flames. The engine trouble was a kind of warning of what was to come.

Here are few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956

Enjoy.

Finally a random picture:

This might be one of the pictures Grandpa developed back in the early 1920's. No idea who the girls are. This picture is on the dark side. I did my best to lighten it up.

Well that's all I have to share with you today. I hope you have a very good weekend, mine will be short. I have to work on Saturday.
Don't forget to drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
Till then.

Gladys: Nov. 1, 1932 Chicago, Ill.

Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was good. On Saturday we had the last show for our play. All three nights we had very good crowds. Everyone Had a very good time. Now for me it's back to the same old same old. Oh well, quiet time is a good thing.
Here is the next letter from Gladys:

As always, for those that find it hard to read, here is what I think it says:

                   Tuesday
Dear Howard:-
  well! your letter arrived
yesterday p.m. & thanks for the
candidate cards. as I am very
interested in knowing who
is running for office up around
there & I mean running! Be-
cause they sure do run
around don't they? Well
i can never! never! understand
it, because I feel that if a
man is good. he would
be liked & wanted well everything
by the people so he would
be elected & not have to
run around & beg buy &
steal his votes as they sure

do. If you care see anything
convincing in R. speeches
go ahead. I can't, its all
idle talk and if you
think a new man inex-
perienced can know more
about handling this miss
we are in than a man
who has had to do & know
it for 4 yrs. well go ahead
now I'm telling you just
how I feel but don't go &
tell anyone. yes! I'm a
Hoors rooter & a loud
one at that. After knowing
what I know won't R
I'd have to be blind, deaf &
dumb to vote for him.
well I'd better stop before

I get you real mad at me.
& why should we be mad on
acct of some thing we cannot help.
Interested in hearing about
that party but hope some
one will come forward and
do some thing to help her
poor kid. He certainly is a
poor sport. Let me know
what ever you hear.
Yes! Linnea is still in school
does not take her states board
 exam until Feb. some time
Edna is fine & busy as ever.
Fathers aunt died yesterday
morning so we all go to the
funeral tomorrow p.m.
you remember Ruth & Ivan
Olson who visited us that

time I was home? Well, it's
their mother who died.
She was Pete Swanson's
youngest sister& only 9 years
older than Dad. She used to
wheel Dad around in his buggy
when he was a baby. Well! so
it goes.
The weather is cold here
but no snow yet. They say
we will have a very cold long
winter terrible for all that
crowd of homeless people who
stand & shiver. Gee! how I
hate to see it.
Yes! I did hear something
about W. Walin's robbery. but
I only heard that his car was
stolen & when it was found

everything had been removed
from it that could be removed.
But he got it all fixed up again
a couple of weeks ago. Cousin
Edward did all the work on it.
He is very handy around cars.
takes after his fathers cousin H.J.
I guess. Edward is as big as
you are Howard. Red hair &
everything. You certainly
would know he was a
relative of yours if you saw
him "sure enough?"
Too bad about the Fin
boy who was he?
Howard can you tell me
the first name of that
a very who gave the 5000.00
to the R.N.C. was it Sewell or

Waldo. They are both nephews
of my patient & very prominent
in the Repub. part as Miss
Avery's father was one of the
committee of men who founded
the Repub. party in 1866 at
Jackson Mich. and she has
been president of the Women's
National Republican Club for
years & years. That is why we
stayed at the N.N.R. club in
New York when we were there.
Well write me soon again
and tell me all the news.
    as ever Gladys.

Now this is a very newsy letter.
I do wonder if the election she stated talking about had to do with the Sunnyside Gun & Rod Club.Or was it something else.
I wonder what the people from that time would think about the Republican Party today.
It was sad to hear about Walter's car being stolen then stripped.
Mentioning the homeless people was a little bit of a surprise. I know it did happen. Reading someone mentioning it makes it more real.
Her father aunt passing away. I wonder how old she was.
I wonder who the Fin boy was and what happened to him.
I wonder what Linnea was in school for.

Here is a picture from the scrap book. 1936:

Alyce Jane McHenry, 11, the Omaha girl who was operated upon for her upside down stom-
ach, is shown in an Associated Press wirephoto as she celebrated the first anniversary of her
operation, and in the other picture as she appeared only last July. She now weighs 96 pounds,
double her weight of a year ago. Her operation and convalescence in Fall River, Mass., attracted
nation-wide attention.

It must have been very hard living with an upside down stomach. I wonder how common this kind of thing was back then and today.

Here are a few pages from the joke book, "Bedtime Laughs". 1956:

Enjoy.

Here is a random picture:

Taken during someones class trip.

Well, that's all I have to share with you today.
I hope you will drop by again real soon for more Fading History.
